I read a link recently (will post soon) that Newcastle United had plans to expand the stadium from their current (think it's 54,000) to around 61,000. The stands are the ones that were last expanded( the really tall ones.
a quote-'Newcastle United has announced plans for the £300m redevelopment of St James' Park football stadium, including a rise in capacity to 60,000, a hotel, a conference centre and apartments. '
Those plans were set forth before the new ownership took over. I'm not sure if they are still out there or not, but I would assume since we haven't heard otherwise, it is still in the works.
i think with arsenal's new stadium, liverpool and everton planning on building new stadiums it is nessisary for SJP to hold 60,000 especially with old traford at 75,000.
just imagine if the whole stadium was carried around fully making the stadium complete- it would be breathtaking and possibly one of the best in the world. How much capacity would the stadium hold then.
Newcastle fans are very pasionate and i feel the presure of having an outstanding stadium might inspire the player that bit more.
Link below to earlier thread about the topic, and a picture provided courtesy of steveedster. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=510701 Last I heard the club was still speaking with engineers about the logistics of development, mainly how to phase it in so as to minimize disruption to the club's schedule and to the general area. Plus they had yet to do formal economic analysis of the whole conference center, housing, etc. Once that stuff is done the club would then be in position to know how much it will really costs, when they could do it, how to apply for financing and then proceed with planning approval. But that info is about a month old or so. Would love to see another EPL club with 60k fans in regular attendance.
