You put that with the racist chants directed at the English youth players yesterday and it seems that Spain do have a problem... and makes Aragones' innocence plea over his earlier Henry comments a little more shallow as well...

Certainly does - I think he was highlighting wot he perceives 2 b English hypocrisy. Anyway I wonder who those fans were trying 2 motivate?

And of course Spain has a perfect record in their colonial past as well - the conquistadores would never have done anything bad [cough] the aztecs [/cough]

Aragones is one of those people who whenever they say anything to the media you are fully prepared to cringe. He must have been extremely limber back in his fútbal playing days, because he does a very good job of getting his foot all the way up to his mouth whenever he talks. By now they should know that he shouldn't ever be allowed to talk about anything other than the formation he is going to play.

He won't be sacked for any of this, of course. This is Spain we are talking about, and it certainly isn't a country that prides itself on political correctness.

There is a hilarious amount of seemingly innocent racism in this country.

I saw the interview with him on Fox Sports World and he basically blames the press for pushing the issue. Saying you will print what you want and say what you want. He is really defensive for something he terms as trival or not even worth mentioning.

And no kidding about who they are trying to motivate with racist chants?!!???!!?!? Why would you want to say it in the 1st place.....

Don't discount cultural differences. What we perceive as racist behaviour may be accepted as normal in other countries and vice-versa. I believe that his points were lost in translation.

So chanting monkey noises is just a cultural distinction?

I've been told that what he said was a particularly nasty description of Henry's colour etc. Apparently the Spanish language allows certain less vicious euphemisms which wouldn't have been as bad, although they would have translated the same. But either way, whether he's racist or not saying it in front of the cameras is a particular stupid thing to do. It also seems too much of a coincidence for the rascist chanting at the game last night not to be connected. I don't recall ever hearing that amount of monkey noises at a previous Spanish international...

Oh also, for gods sake, can't the racist scum find a new insult, I mean monkey chanting is 30 years old!

The reaction from the English in general makes those doing it win.

I'm so sick of the "he's from a different generation" excuses, it just means he's been a racist for a longer time. Arragones should be fired immediately.

No it doesn't. The people doing it would have won if Cole, Jenas, WP and Defoe had been intimidated and given up.

The English media is highlighting the unacceptable nature of racism.

FIFA/UEFA should have nipped this in the bud when Aragones made his initial remarks. Those comments made in the US in todays society would have spelled out his being sacked. Age is not a factor. Inappropriate comments are just that, no matter how old you are. The adage "older and wiser" doesn't seem to fit for this geezer.

I believe there will most likely always be racism in society, but it is the job of those in power to discipline those who tout racist polices and actions.

Aragones should be fired, the Spanish FA fined, and the games monitored in the future. There is no place in football or society for these actions.

That was a lot of soapboxing before my first cup of coffee.

They did it to get attention, cause disruption and to generally piss you lot off. Considering the press have highlighted the issue at great length as opposed to discussing the game, part one worked. You could argue that part two worked because it helped to put the English players off the game. The final part was obviously successful. It's the same argument as the hostage taker one. They want their 5 minutes of fame to make a point, so why give exactly what they want?
