    OOooh. Me Me....

I was there. The US women played not very good and Italy was hungry. They hustled and frankly the US looked they were trying to get on Sportscenter with some fancy plays that would have been better served with basic moves. Their first touches were abysmal as well and there passing was pathetic.

The crowd loved having the US here, but it was clear they also appreciated the hustle the Italians had.

It was a tie in the standings but only blind bad luck for the Italians gave that to the US. We were outplayed, pure and simple.

BTW: I didn't know Susan Powter was Italian and a goalie ;-)

I was there. The one thing that came to mind last night while watching them play was an article I saw by form WNT Coach Tony Dicicco who criticized the Womens play in the world cup for not being able to score much in the run of play. Said the majority of their goals came off of set pieces. That was exactly what we saw last night. Really wasn't a lot of quality chances by the US in the run of play. Granted a lot of credit goes to Italy as they always had the majority of their players behind the ball and played a very strong defensively and were pretty creative on the ball too. Dissappointing loss but a lot of fun still

Watched it off and on on ESPN2. Looked terrible and boring. Glad I didn't bother with it. Every single time they showed a crowd shot, it looked like everyone there was female (soccer moms with thier little girls team). Chris, what would you say the gender break down was?

    Gender breakdown

Easily 70-30 female. All the people running around were female. The concourse was packed with them. Everyone trying to get to autographs and stuff were female as well. And, I guess not too surprisingly, relatively young. 13 and under.

    Re: Gender breakdown

I'd rather watch a baseball game than a womens soccer game. Oh wait, I did. :)

The sexist attitude displayed by some of you is pathetic quite frankly.

Italy showed up and played tough, the USA didn't have much in the way of creativity to break them down.

Despite that, it was an entertaining 2-2 draw with chances for both teams to win it.

The recent Olympics and World Cup is showing that the rest of the world is catching up with the USA. Particularly the european teams. That is a healthy thing for the women's version of the sport.

I find it ironic some of you say it is boring while you defend yourself against the same accusations from Baseball and Pointy ball fans.

If you can accept cheerleaders, the Zardmeister and football lines, then you accept women's football too :D

Now hold on a gosh darn second. Your statement reminds me of a WUSA forum poster, getting all defensive about gender.

My comment was NOT sexist. I think NBA basketball is boring. Men play NBA basketball. I think WNBA is boring. Women play WBNA basketball. See, I don't discriminate based on sex, I discriminate based on boredom. (sp?) And I think womens soccer is boring, with the exception that if I have a personal interest (ie personally know someone in the game).

To further state my point, there are different types of "soccer". While the basic rules are the same, many including myself, have argued that the indoor game is boring and not fun to watch. On the same token, womens soccer bores me. Its NOT simply because they are women, it is because the game doesnt play the same as the men's game that I like to watch.

Name the differences that lead to boredom.

Skill level, speed, what exactly do you see in one and not the other?

Then think about a poster who might claim the same difference in the EPL and MLS and claim MLS is boring as a result.

    Dangerous path to tread ...

    Women and sports

I went into the game not really wanting to go. My father-in-law was the one who really wanted to go. I don't as a general rule watch women's soccer. But I was pleasantly surprised by the game.

I was happy I was "dragged" to the game. The Italians showed a huge amount of heart. And yes, the rest of the world is catching up to the US.

To be frank, if both teams had played like the US did, I would never see another women's game. Thank goodness the Italians seemed to give a crap.

    1) Skill level, speed, and most importantly for me the way goals are scored.
Long distance bombs are a rarity in womens soccer. When they are scored it is usually because the keeper is either poorly positioned, too short to reach or not quick enough to react to a weak shot. Thus the few long goals scored in the womens game are rarely hit "well" and instead are the fault of the defense. I realize there are a few exceptions, as there always are.
Because long shots are a rarity, there are more "huddle in front of the net and poke it home" goals. I'm not really a fan of these, it often doesnt take a lot of skill to score a goal like this. One may ask then, why would the US team be more successful than others. The simple answer is the more times you throw the ball in front of the net, the more often you'll poke one in. How many times have you watched (granted I've seen quite a few, but certainly not all) the USWNT games and seen a blowout that consisted of more than a handful of these type goals?

    2) You're absolutely right about EPL vs. MLS, or any sports comparison of that nature. I rarely watch MLS games that I don't have a personal interest in. If its a "big game" or if the Wizards are playing I'm all over it. But a Wednesday nighter pitting DC vs. Dallas in mid-June isn't going to get my attention. But a game pitting Man City vs. Charlton probably would because I know the skill level and thus possibility of enjoyment is higher. Its not a dangerous path, its a true path.

A better point for me to make earlier is that I really enjoy watching men's college basketball. Therefore that proves to me that I'm a "fan" of the sport of basketball. But, I can't stand to watch the NBA (lack of defense, all dunks, etc.) or the WNBA or womens college (again relative lack of speed, skill, etc.). Its not that I dont like the sport, I just dont like certain variations of it. This idea isn't gender based, its entertainment based, and there are examples of it everywhere.

If you asked the general sports fan that watched any of these sports which of these were most entertaining to watch in their opinion what would you say the answers would be?
    1) WNBA vs. NBA
    2) Mens college basketball vs. women's college basketball
    3) MLS vs. WUSA
    4) World Cup vs. Women's World Cup
    5) Womens Olympic Hockey vs. Mens Olympic Hockey

My guess is that the answers would be: NBA, Men's hoops, MLS, World Cup and Men's hockey. And it wouldn't be based on gender alone. It would be indirectly based on gender because of the reasons stated, not simply because it is women on the playing field. In each of the 5 questions the sport is the same; same basic rules and limitations. The only difference would be the skill level, speed, ability, etc.
The same list of questions, removing gender and replaced with nationality (loosley) would give the same results:
    1) EPL vs. MLS
    2) NFL vs. Canadian Football League
    3) Austrailian Rugby vs. American Rugby

Same sport, different skill levels. Therefore the average fan of each sport would say they'd rather watch the variation of the sport with more speed and skill. That wouldnt indicate they were racist toward Americans or Canadians, it would just indicate that they liked the English, American and Austrailian versions of the same sport better. So using the same logic me being bored out of my mind by womens soccer and saying so doesn't make me sexist, it makes me simply bored.

Now see, theres another prime example. Mud Wrestling is the better AND involves women. Therefore, I must not be sexist if I'd rather watch wet soaking women frolic around and grope each other than I would watch men do the same. :D

I went. It obviously was packed with 12 year old girls who knew nothing about soccer besides the fact that they "heart Mia Hamm." I wanted to hurl because it's just sad to think that they could be say going to Wizard's games but they just don't. Their reason is probably along the lines of "because Mia won't be there." Whhhhhy? Go to a Wizard's game for the love of God you crazy little children... we may not have Mia, but we're still good!

    Bah.

And wasn't Mia not even at the game? Or was that just something I had heard in the newspaper?

Nope, she wasn't there. I don't think they realised that though.
