just a question here---are we yelling you suck a$$hole? not moralizing, but probably not our best work
Had a great time at the match. We had multiple drums near the core of the section, which helped immensely to keep the momentum going in the section. I personally don't like "you suck **************", I think it is very middle-school. While I usually like to stay positive, the reason I don't like the chant isn't because of the negativity, but because it is unimaginative. Why don't we just start chanting "F*** Jamaica"?? Regardless, I've decided that I'll trade doing that chant if we can keep the section going for 90 minutes. Thanks to the lads from Chicago areas and the rest of the 'Columbus Brigade' for carrying the section.
Don't know that F*** Jamaica would have gone over too well when we were almost outnumbered by them in the stands. I must say i was very impressed with their fans. Met one guy at Target getting ponchos. Obviously we got different colors. Fun game. It was really slick out there. We got kind of quiet second half..??? dunno what happened. Loved the grown ass man stuff.
yeah actually, don't get too many Nat home games here maybe I've heard it before and just didn't pay attention to it

Another very bad thing about the "You suck a-hole" (Other than it is juvinile and dumb) is that before it, ESPN had really cranked up the volume in the supporters section. It was as loud as I have heard on a broadcast. Then, Jamaica took a goal kick and the chant was very loud and clear. It only took about 2 seconds for the volume to be cut. After that, only the loudest singing and chanting could be heard. I feel that any organized profanity is counter productive. Hey, I have cussed at probably every game I have attended--even wrote about it in my book. It is just that pre-meditated swearing just makes us look stupid. You know--in an important qualifier against a hated opponant--Mexico, El Salvador--fine. But in what was in essance a friendly, against a team I believe most of us like, it is just wrong. The first time I heard the "You suck a-hole" chant was at a friendly against New Zealand. I mean come on! Flame away.

Um. Hellllllo? They're keeper was a huge pu$$y. Give me a frickin break. It made us just shout the phrase louder.
I couldn't agree more!! I'm no stick in the mud regarding a bit of foul language (I throw more than my share of the F-bombs on a daily basis), but that stuff is way low class. What does it serve? Was Jamaica distracted and quaking in their boots? I doubt it. Were non-Army US fans getting pumped up? No. Did the the entire section look foolish? You bet! The next comments is specifically addressed at the the Cbus Army following. By my count I've been to 27 US matches. The vast majority of those have been in the Sam's Army section. Columbus is the only stadium that consistently has a signficant number of youngsters getting liquored up (or is it just pretending to be?) and making complete fools of themselves. Language, jumping around, rudeness - none of it centered around the match. All of it trying to get attention. I sense this is mostly the Ohio State crowd, but who knows? Anyway, like I said above, I'm no prude and I had my share of stews last night, but some of those people were downright embarrassing - as a card-carrying Red State Ohian, as a passionate US fan and as a human being. Grow up kiddies!! Especially the curly-haired blonde dude in the White '98 Nat's jersey standing about 3/4 the way up the section. You embarrased plenty of people around you. Hot chick though. Oh, the game? We were below average at best. Sanneh=See Corrales Corrales=Go home. McHead=Not much effort?
i could do without the cursing. i was 2 sections over and could hear it loud and clear. it is kind of juvenile. so let's come up with something better.
Heh. I shouted the phrase everytime the guy took a goal kick. It's tradition. I'm not huge on swearing, and I didn't swear past that phrase. No fingers. No four letter words. Frankly, I just don't find the phrase all that offensive. Maybe I'm just horrible. Who knows. Hilarious that ESPN picked it up clearly.
Well, i'm not a fan of chanting U-S-A U-S-A. We aren't PTH'ers at a Women's game. We're more sophisticated than U-S-A U-S-A for 90 minutes. Point being, you can throw out whatever the f chant you'd bloody like. There'll be people that won't like it.
I'm completely the opposite. I would rather do that, then chants I don't know. Maybe if there had been chant sheets handed out, it would be nice. But there weren't any to my knowledge. USA is so much easier and louder than any of the other chants that were done.
Just walked in the door after two flights (thanks goodness I was able to get on earlier flights or I'd STILL be sitting at Dayton International...long story) First Impression: Wet. Very Wet. I kept waiting for the guys from Fish and Game to stock some of the standing water with trout... Second impression: I had a great time - I'll put my thoughts about the game on the post game thread, but for me it was well worth the trip. Thanks to all - the guys from Chicago, Tennessee, DC, and everywhere else that made the section fun! Was I comfortable with the excess profanity? No, but remember that I'm part of the Mormon Battalion*, where we specialize in non-profane taunting (yes, that was me who yelled "Get him a bodybag..yaaahhh!" at one of the Reggae Boyz) but I have to expect some of it. Some guys just took it a bit to excess last night. It happens. I'm still with the Army for my next cap. *Our motto: "Anyone can swear, but to really curse someone requires creativity and style."
Yelling the whole 'you suck a-hole!" thing is not that big of a deal. Yes, some people don't like it. But at least people aren't throwing bags of urine or other fun things. And it isn't as classless as the Mexican fans chanting 'Osama". That was weak. Way to represent Army.
get bent... i was there... that's not a problem we do the same thing in chicago... who cares now, i was turned off by the nazi chant towards the ref...

damn, settle down---I guess there is no questioning the glorious Sam's Army, christ just saying it's not really an original or interesting chant, but something I'd hear in high school I'm happy people are cheering, but it seems like we could do better--I suppose it will take time until we tap into the great creative forces here in our country, and come with something a little funnier. good for you in Chicago, sensitive boy
oh, I agree, it's not a big deal, just wish we were funnier or more creative. Along those same lines we have the same chant for every player, I dunno if we have any songs, which is odd, seeing how the US of A is home to the two biggest forms of modern music, in rock and rap. now for the overly sensitive, I am not blasting those who were there, just saying I hope we evolve-----I am very happy that people showed up (all 9,000 of you) and we were generally pretty loud. gotta say I don't care about class, just humor
