I'm curious what the refs around here think of Jaime Colome's red card in the 50th minute. It sure seemed like a completely legit red card to me, but there are some people in the USA forum who think the call was "dubious." What do you guys think?
I think he knew he was going to contact a US player and instead exaggerated his follow through so as to cleat the US player. Even if not intentional, it was violent & dangerous enough to warrant it. I too was a little surprised at the red, as I didn't expect it to get shown.
i thought it was "dubious" -- from what i saw - both of the play and eye contact - i just didn't think that he was trying to kick/strike olsen in the chest. the cuban player got there first and did a wild kick which got the ball first and he then ended up with his leg and foot up high. it was very unusual, and it definitely created a very dangerous situation. but then i really thought that the actual contact was more of olsen (who got there late himself) running into his foot than the cuban kicking olsen. i didn't go back and watch it again (although i guess i know will), but after having his foot raised like that, did he jab it at olsen or did olsen run into him? very dangerous, but not a striking in my opinion. yellow.
Pretty much my thoughts! I did think it was more of the follow through hitting Olsen, but it seemed like his objective was to clear the ball so far that he wouldn't have to worry about it for a while. Dangerous, but not violent! And quite different from a slide tackle that is normally a potentially dangerous play. And then again. I haven't reffed at anywhere near this level!
Interesting. Not having seen the play, based completely on the descriptions provided, I would go with the call of the referee on the scene, which is my default setting, and strangely enough the one required by the referee code of ethics as I understand it. Regards.
