I don't think I've ever met anyone who wants to reunify under Beijing, but that doesn't mean they don't want peaceful reunification someday.

A credible threat of force keeps peace in the Taiwan Strait. If we renounce the use of force, the TI splittists will move towards independence immediately. The DF-11 and DF-15 missiles are the least of your worries. According to Richard Fisher a defence analyst who has a reputation of doing his homework, China has around 300 Flankers and will eventually build 1500 j-10s. These numbers are provided by russian officials working on both projects. China will be adding around 60 4th gen aircraft per year to their inventory (continuing MKK deliveries, j-11s in Shenyang and possibly j-10s in Chengdu) while Taiwan will get nothing anytime soon. The TI navy will soon get 4 destroyers which have been mothballed for a quarter of a century. At about the same time China will induct the Indigenous "Aegis" warships. Taiwan is basically Militarily, economically and politically outgunned. Australian Foreign minister yesterday claimed that any move towards independence would be "very Provocative".

I greatly admire the koreans for their stong national unity. Even with a basketcase North which threatens to turn Seoul into a "city of flames". They never look down on their less affluent brothers and never fail to work towards eventual unification. Those idiots who voted in those opinion polls in Taiwan cannot be serious but no matter it is only a metter of time

I can't imagine that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan would be good for business anywhere.

Seeing a big, glowing hole in the ground on TV where Taipei used to be would give the advantage to the Pat Buchanan wing of the Republican Party/the Dick Gephardt wing of the Democratic Party and we would see tariff rate percentages on Chinese products that look like a Las Vegas weather forecast in August. (110, 120, get it?)

They could nuke Taipei, but invading? Forget it. The US Navy would sink them like the Polish ice hockey team.

Oh, but they launched a manned spacecraft a couple of weeks ago! They're catching up to us real fast! The rate they're going, by this time next year, they'll have mastered the hula hoop and a sitcom about a talking car.

Seriously, that's a very important advancement in man's exploration of space.

    Sincerely,
    Fifty *#*#*#*#ing Years Ago

America's first manned mission was forty years ago not fifty. Their Mercury spacecraft aboard a Redstone rocket is ice age tech compared to shenzhou. It only went up for a 15 minute sub-orbital flight. People who think China is repeating what the soviets and americans did in 61 are kidding themselves. The shenzhou is completely comparable to current Soyuz models in terms of technology. The docking system is compatible with the ISS but too bad the yanks will never allow us to go near the "internatinal" space station. So we will have to build our own. But when we do, the neo-cons will start bitching about the China threat and the others will start the "LOL, you are 50 years behind" crap. We never said the spacecraft was 21st century tech, but who the fcuk are you to put down other's achievements.
