Since we have a huge shortage in the military right now, and Bush will undoubtedly start another unprovoked war within the next four years, when will he start a draft?
Don't beleive the hype. Congress will never institue the draft again. No politician is dumb enough to suggest it not even Bush. The US military's mission over the last 15 years has been one of downsizing and doing more with less. Quality over quanity. A draft would go against everything the military has structured itself to. Let me say agian...the draft will NEVER come back! Stop worring about it!
me too, for a lot of them anyway. i think it'll be in the first quarter. by then, a lot of people on both sides of every aisle in the country will be for it, 'cause it'll be painfully obvious how much we need it (by then). just woke up from the couch. did i miss anything?

Are you kidding me? This election tells the Republicans that anyone with an "R" in front of his name can do whatever the hell he wants, and as long as he says all the right things come election time his base (the South and the Plains) will vote strong for him. Even if his record shows the exact opposite. America is screwed.
I have to agree here. It's political suicide to institute a draft. Bush might propose it, but there's now way it gets through congress.
I agree that there won't be one, but it wouldn't surprise me if Bush did propose one in one form or another. Here's my question for you ITN, how many campaign promises will Bush go back on? I'm betting the Iraq election is pushed back, and taxes are raised (he has to, there's now way around it), and social security is hardly touched...that's just for a start. The country will continue on its present course, and that's not a good thing.
What's more likely - a universally unpopular draft or declaring victory in Iraq and pulling out while its still a clusterfck?

The draft naysayers don't understand the situation, it seems. Noone is suggesting Bush is going to just start a draft for the heck of it, or even merely to continue the status quo in Iraq. Clearly, he'll just withdraw from there before then. But right now, there are about 5 or 6 countries teetering on the brink, and if any of them topple, we would have a whole new front on our hands, and a draft won't be a thing of choice. I mean, how do we avoid going to war with Pakistan if one of the many assassination attempts on Musharraf actually succeeds, as seems almost sure to happen before long?
There will be no draft. It was a democrat who brought it up, Bush has said all along that it won't happen. As for invading other countries, I don't see it happening. We are in two right now, one we should be there, one is questionable (Iraq), yes the reasons were for the most part valid, but doesn't mean it should have been done as it was done. Aside from manpower, another country won't be attacked for the simple reason of politics. Bush took a chance going into Iraq, he had reasons, good, bad and right or wrong, but he had them, he had a foe that the country knew and hated in Sadaam. Another country>? Nope, no foe for the people to get behind getting rid of, simple as that. Unless things change and we get attacked again by terrorists, he won't go somewhere else. He will pull out of Iraq SLOWLY over the next couple years. Personally I think he's done a good job, but I would love to have seen what kind of president he would have been without the War on Terror. Hopefully we will get to see this over the next four years.
No I understand the issue quite well. Don't propogate this fear, you are making assumtions based on events that have not happened and even if they did happen you are assuming that the government of america would act with a strong military presense and your then assume the only way to act in that way is to send draft cards in the mail to our sons. Military experts do not want the draft they feel it weakens their fighting units and moral. Also no politician wants to have that vote for re-instituting the draft over their heads when their re-election comes back. It would be political suicide.
Why waste time with a draft? Just give your campaign contributors tax breaks to move all the jobs that don't involve asking if you want fries with that to Shenzen and Bangalore. The military will be the only source of jobs with benefits left. Personally, I think there should be a draft, but only these people should be eligible: -Children & grandchildren of congressmen -Children & grandchildren of anyone who works for a federal government contractor who makes more than $50,000 a year. -Children & grandchildren of anyone with $500 or more of stock in a company that has federal government contracts.
I don't think that will cut if for you anymore. Unless at school you'd develop such a specialized skill that you wouldn't really see the 'real Army'. (ie be a lawyer or doctor). And I hear that in order to get out for being gay, you 'demonstratable' evidence.

Social Security will not be ended. People will not die like dogs in the gutter because they can't get medical care. Homosexuals will not be rounded up and placed in camps. Secret police will not begin arresting anyone who dares to disagree with the President. There will not be a new National Religion with Jerry Falwell as the Archbishop. Millions of people will not be homeless. These were all hysteria-building campaign memes. They were all nonsense, they didn't scare nearly enough people and now they're as dead as Caesar. They weren't true yesterday, they aren't true today and they won't be true tomorrow. Instead of just picking up the drum and continuing on with this hallucinatory nonsense, you really ought to start genuinely asking yourself why the American people, in ever-increasing numbers, don't think the left knows what it's talking about.
