Down 4-0 before half-time! Is this because Roberto Carlos isn't playing? Can the people who are watching it or following it online explain?

Real have been at last exposed. It was inevitable that they would have a horrible defensive display eventually. I will repeat what I have said before the season started. Real will not win anything with thier current defense. They need a solid center back in the next transfer window.

Ruben was crying on the bench once Queiroz subbed him off and let Solari go as left back, Guti is playing miserably and Im enjoying it!!!! Pavon is awful too! Thank you ESPN!!!!

reyes is looking quite awesome. its so strange tho, i know that real dont have a quality defense or a dmid this yr but when i saw the 3rd goal go in around the 16th min im like this is impossible. then they nice build up and the bullet shot on the 4th i was like whoa! lol. you must be jumping for joy huh mario?
basically sevilla is playing brilliantly all around, even shutting down reals offense. i am not quite so sure that their D is that good to shut them down, but like i said within like 10 mins it was 2-0 and then 3-0 around 16mins, so raul and ronaldo must be worried when they go up to attack and the mid isnt pushing that much either. like mario said guti is sucking, reyes is killing everybody and dario silvas speed is helping as well. ruben lookED terrible, pavon doesnt look good, and no body else can do anything.

    So where do we start?
In a sense I was every bit as shell-shocked as Reuben and the Real Madrid players. It was bound to happen eventually... a lot of the ood results defensively of late were because of magical goalkeeping, not great defence. So with the defence stretched even further with two first-choice players missing, this was always on the cards. I should just be grateful it wasn't a Milan or a Man U we faced with this performance.

Let's look at a few lowlights:

The coach: More than anyone else he must take the blame for this one.
    1) Pavon at the right. Since when has pavon had the speed and the balance to cope with someone of Reyes' speed and skill?

    2) Playing Guti. At a time when the defence is missing two first choice players and you are playing away from home, why not play Cambiasso? It was obvious that the defence needed some cover, and Guti is just too lazy and too inept to provide it. We were overrun at midfield which meant that the ball kept coming at an inexperienced defence that wasn't up to the job.

    3) Keeping Guti on: It was mystifying why he kept Guti on that long. Yes I know he had two shots at goal but other than that he was useless. The 4th goal when Pavon dispossessed was a case in point... you could see Beckham desperately trying to get back while Guti stood and watched near the halfway line. Other than not winning the ball, he also kept losing it, the time he got a red card being a prime example. It was obvious in 10-15 minutes that cambiasso needed to come on... instead he spent most of 90 minutes warming up.

    4) Keeping Raul on: We are getting a rerun of Del Bosque's Holy Cow syndrome. Regardless of how badly they played raul and Hierro could not be touched and now the same thing is happening with Raul. What is Portillo doing on the bench? Why was he not brought on when it was painfully obvious that raul was playing at 50% of his ability? When he was missing sitters, slow of his mark, lacking sharpness and hunger?

    5) Playing Reuben and not playing Solari: I know that Reuben needs exposure to develop but I don't think it's fair to have thrown him into a team that lacks the guidance of Roberto Carlos and salgado in defence, has no cover in midfield, is playing away from home against one of Spain's better teams and a team that includes one of the two best young players in Spain. It was obvious that he needed to start Solari simply because of the experience he brings and play Raul Bravo on the right sinc he at lease has a chance of staying on his feet against Reyes.

The President: maybe even more to blame than the coach. I hope the message is loud and clear Senor Perez... the Pavon's and Reuben's are not enough. You need the Milito's and the Chivu's and the Lucio's of the world.

Figo: It is a team sport and when the guy at right back was getting skinned and roasted alive, and clearly lacked the ability to take on Reyes alone, Figo needed to support him better, to get back and to provide some defensive cover.

Guti: On a night when the team performance gets a zero, Guti gets a minus 10. I hope this performance explains to the Guti fans once and for all why so many of us can't stand him. Can't defend, can't track back, can't tackle, can't pass, loses the ball, puts the team in bad situations because of his wannabe tough guy act, cannot link attack and defence, leaves too much work to Beckham. Every match he will have 5 good touches and all his fans will say how good he is, but he compensates by screwing up a minimum 5-10 times per match. Wish they had not extended his contract. I'd love to know what Casillas told him.

Zidane: Just not fast in enough in taking the ball upfield or releasing it. Please compare to Reyes or to Mutu or Duff from the Chelsea team in their match yesterday against Newcastle.

Raul: Needs time on the bench, whether we like it or not. His worst season that I can remember. Let Casillas take over the captaincy for a few games or Roberto carlos when he is fit.

Pavon: Better once he moved into his usual position so can't really blame him if he was played out of position, in a role he is not suited for. But no one expected him to be burnt so badly.

Helguera: Lack of defensive support but also poor marking and often hopelessly out of position.

Average marks: Casillas (not much for him to do except pick up the ball from the net after his defence let him down), Raul Bravo and Beckham

The only ones to emerge with credit: Ronaldo (kept trying but had too little support) and Solari (good even in a brand new left back position, he needs to be a part of the first XI, we must get over this reputation obsession)

It's good for this to happen to Madrid. They need to be exposed defensively if management is going to pull their heads out and sign a quality center back in addition to some decent subs on the outside backs as well. Roberto Carlos has been so durable that it's really no wonder that they didn't have a capable sub ready in case he went down to injury.

If the Champions League game against Juve didn't get through Valdano's thick head that they need defense, than hopefully this game will. Certainly this loss won't be quite as expensive as the loss to Juve.

Also, great to see an Andalucian team take it to Real Madrid. As a Malaga fan, I generally root for Sevilla to lose, but you see them do this to Real Madrid, you must stand up and applaud. Besides, Malaga beat Sevilla a week ago.;)

I'm happy that you enjoyed the game. Now you have a very small notion of how i have enjoyed the last 4 years seeing Barcelona to lose in all the competitions, not only a single game. It has been 4 years of laughter after laughter. I wanted to thank Barcelona these years of fun. Thank you.

Sorry, i also wanted to that Barcelona the moments of fun when we play this year a champion league game, and we see that Barcelona don't play CL this year. Thank you again.

I also wanted to thank Barcelona to be 4 points behind us in la liga. It's always fun.

To see Barcelona lose la liga, Champions league, spain cup, catanlunya cup!!!, and again,la liga, Champions league, spain cup, catanlunya cup!!!, and again,la liga, Champions league, spain cup, catanlunya cup!!!, and again..... It has been too much, i really really really wants to thank to all the people that has made possible so many moments of infinite fun. We never forget you.

Thanks everybody, particularly anir, for the comprehensive review. It will probably take two more games like this to cause some front office action in the transfer window. Is the "Zidanes and Pavons" idea necessary because there isn't enough money to have Zidanes and Stams? Maybe there isn't any money left for great defenders.

I doubt it. I think that it will take another president or sports dircetor and that is highly unlikely. If after the Juve game, the team did not realize that better defending was needed, a Sevilla match with makeshift players won't change their mind.

Not many people to thank. Just one person, Gaspart. But thats ok, he is now hanging out with Sanz!

So Mario, as a point of information, with no insult intended, who plays in the Catalan Cup? I assume the only competition for Barcelona would be Espanyol, so is that who won it those three times?

Once Barca wins the UEFA cup then the Real faithful will witness Barca's true potential. I wouldn't be surprised if Barca stole the domestic title this year...

I highly doubt that! Both Real Madrid and Barca would be lucky to be in the top 3 this year!
Although I do think Barca is in a better position, the problem with real Madrid this year and last for that matter that we are like a big giant with glass teeth!!! we are BIG and powerful but once we get punched in the mouth we are going tumble all over the place BUT here is the bigger problem, once we fall it will be very hard to stand back up because of the blame game that will tare the team apart and having the biggest egos in the world wont help….GOD HELP US!
See everybody thinks we are god and that we should win everything where the truth of the matter is RM was a better team 3-4 years ago.

That’s just my OPPIONION, Please have yours and don’t flame mine!!! Don’t bitch and moan state your opinion move on.
    Thanks you

From Terressa to Sabadell to Girona etc. The Catalan Cup is no competition to Barcelona, but that is exactly the problem, its a non-important tourney played by the B-Team and no one cares for it, that is Barcelona fans and directors. This cup is more important to the small teams and to the haters of Barcelona.

Trust me, no one in Barcelona cares about the Cup.

    Better 3-4 years ago? Probably.

But not good enough to win La Liga this year? I don't agree.

Depor, Valencia and Madrid are the only teams that I would consider strong enough to compete for the Championship and they all have weaknesses.

Depor probably has the most balanced team but they have Jabo and he will probably screw it up at some time.

Valencia does not have a good enough attack and Madrid has the aforementioned weaknesses in defense.

Barcelona? Not there yet, they will loose about 8 to 10 games and will put them too far from the lead.

Don't forget Tortosa, Lleida, and Seu d'Urgell!;)

The portion I italicized is a point that can't be emphasized enough. Catalunya is made up of many more regional and cultural identities than just the city center of Barcelona.

While it is true that one can find at least one Barsa Penya bar in most localities, there also exist a fair amount of Catalans who love to see the team lose, and lose big.

You mean within Can Barsa, right?

A big of course to all your questions. I meant FC Barcelona, thought it was obvious, my apologies are offered.

I don't expect that every catalan wants to see FC Barcelona win, just like I would not expect every Madrileño to be a Madridista.

But all the above fits into the FC Barcelona haters, so the Catalan cup is important to them but only if Barcelona looses. If the team wins the cup, then its no a big deal.

These games are a sure lose-lose situation.

I didn't intend for my response to be directly pointed toward you, but rather for the education of the vast majority of people who are of the misconception that Barcelona = Catalunya.
