just a friendly reminder to all that this game is tonight at 8pm on ESPN2.

a very important match for us as well as the fire and metros. as most of you know, the metros are three points behind us with a game in hand. tonight is the makeup.

this is the burn's third game in five days, a situation which mike jeffries called "eminently avoidable."

    from MLS:

MetroStars (10-12-2, 32 pts) at Dallas Burn (11-7-7, 40 pts)
    THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 8 p.m. ET
    The Cotton Bowl (Dallas, TX)

2002 Head-to-Head: Dallas leads series 3-0-0 (Burn lead 7-2 on aggregate goals)
All-time Head-to-Head: Dallas leads series 10-7-0 (Burn lead 34-22 on aggregate goals)

    Top scorers: MetroStars: F Mamadou Diallo (11g, 3a = 25pts); Dallas: F Jason Kreis (13g, 4a = 30pts)

Did you know?: Since the institution of tie results for MLS matches in 2000, these two teams have determined an outright winner in all nine of their head-to-head meetings (7 regular season and 2 playoff matches).

    Key players out:
    MetroStars: M Craig Ziadie (disciplinary suspension);
    Dallas: Antonio Martinez (disciplinary suspension)

Notes: The MetroStars will encounter a tired Burn squad in Dallas, as Mike Jeffries and company will play their third game in five days ... Based on their current position in the overall standings, the MetroStars (only three points clear of New England and D.C.) will be the more desperate team in this match as both clubs attempt to build momentum going into the playoffs

... Each club endured a three-goal loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Galaxy in their last outing, with Dallas falling 4-1 in the Open Cup Semifinals ... The Burn have yet to lose consecutive matches this season, while the Metros own two separate three-game skids ... Octavio Zambrano's club does catch a break due to the suspension of Burn midfielder Antonio Martinez, who has scorched the Metros for 12 points (3g, 6a) in just six appearances (363 minutes) ... Looming head-to-head meetings with D.C. and New England places the MetroStars with their final chance to gain points outside the conference ... Dallas may have cost itself a chance at the Western Conference title but will still be looking to grab the third seed ... The Burn can still win the Western Conference title, even if not entirely by their own doing.

Final Whistle: Midfielder Tab Ramos has returned from IR for the MetroStars with his team in dire need of leadership. Big games from Clint Mathis and Andy Williams would bolster a club in severe need of confidence. Tired and angry, the Burn's depth will be tested. Mental toughness may decide this game.

SCHEDULED REFEREES: Referee: Ricardo Salazar; Assistant Referees: Steven
    Davidson (SAR), Paul Scott (JAR)

if we tie with the metros at the end of the season, we are ahead because first tiebreaker is head to head, right?

will thistle be showing the game?

Rule #1 - MLS games are much more fun when watching with a group of people rather than by self.

yes, the first tie-breaker is head-to-head. then goal differential and then total goals. but we are 2-2 against the metrostars:

    3/27/02: CLB 1 @ MET 0
    4/06/02: MET 2 @ CLB 1
    7/06/02: MET 3 @ CLB 2
    7/31/02: CLB 3 @ MET 2

goal differential is favorable to columbus: we are +1 to the metros -3. total goals favors us too, but it's even closer: we have 38 goals to their 37.

    everything could change tonight.

P.S. - at MLSnet.com i discovered that fewest disciplinary points is the last tie-breaker before a coin toss.

The Metros just ran over Dallas. Dallas didn't convert on A 2V1 and the cabbies came back to dominate the game . This is REALLY gonna be tight now.

3-1 cabbies - that takes our goal differential advantage down to ONE (if I read scott right) and we drop behind in total goals. The cabbies played like a team with a mission tonight.

This is getting WAY too close.

we're two goals better. we are at +1 while they are at -1.

All that really matters is that we do the business against the NerfQuacks this weekend.

    yep, +1 to -1.

in addition to the close goal differentials, the metros currently have a better number of total goals (38 Crew, 40 Metros), so this is going to be a tight race.

Good thing out of the game though --- at least Bonseu didn't score. I still can't believe we let him go...

Bonseu is part of a Dallas defense that has allowed 38 goals in 26 games. That doesn't include the 4 that the Galaxy just rammed down their throat in the Cup SF. We have 1 goal less allowed in 1 game less played. So it seems that our defense has really picked up in the last couple of months.

Now, no T-Bone and no Busch is not only a bad meal but also would be disastrous to the Crew.

According to mlsnet.com the Metros have the tiebreaker on us and they are in second place currently in the playoff standings.

uuhh.. i thought we were better head-to-head and since that's the first tiebreaker, we have the advantage.

they are ahead of us now due to fewer games played. they currently do not have any tie-breaker over us.

we are tied on points (35) and head-to-head competition (2-2) with the metros, but we still have a better goal differential (0 to -1) and the edge in total goals scored (41 to 40).

if the metros lose thursday (at home against united), we go back to first. if they win or draw, they stay on top.
