Note the fan group name Rose City Riveters. As in "Rosie the Riveter." Love it!

Just to say to my friends, cpthomas and Cliveworshipper, I'll never again doubt you or your comments on how great the soccer fans in Portland are again compared to other parts of the country.
I've seen with my own eyes both UP games and today at the Thorns vs Reign game.

I was thinking this morning as I watched the rain out of my Seattle house," I don't feel like driving 3 hours just to see a game. Just go back to bed, watch it on stream later". But then I thought, "you're a big soccer fan and a huge fan of the women's game and you may miss seeing something special today if you don't get you a_s up, take a shower and head south". So I did. And am glad I did.

What a game, what an atmosphere. What every hard core soccer fan and especially those of us who are fans of the women's game want to see and be a part of.

Congratulations to you guys. Well done!

It was great. I especially loved when the team was circling the the stadium to thank the fans after the game and arrived in front of the Rose City Riveters -- which looked to be about 3,000 strong -- and bowed to them. What a moment in women's professional soccer!

I sincerely believe that if Portland can keep this up they will make history.

Not to put undue pressure on you guys but, cpthomas and cliveworshipper, I think we're all counting on you to make sure that happens. :)

    Glad you made it down.

An awful lot of those fans are people who have supported soccer in the town for many years. It seemed like most of the UP season ticket holders and former and current players were there, and many coaches and players from other schools as well. And I even saw parents of Thorns and Reign players.

And there was the crossover from the Timbers side as well.

Those groups don't all know each other yet. I had an elderly woman explain to me who Alex Morgan was.

It sort of hit me when I saw the YouTube feed of the game and saw the faces of the kids walking in with the players up close, and realized some were neighborhood kids I helped coach and watched in u6 matches around town.

    Lots of fun!

I did my part to make sure the Keybank Club stays well stocked in microbrews. Somebody else is going to make sure they stay well stocked with the single malts, though.

One thing they don't have at Merlo

Cup holders at your seats for the beer!

It is amazing. I have been to Merlo several times and 1 Timbers game. And Like I have said before there is NOTHING like it in this country. No other sport can match it in this country. The Timber army is there hours before the game standing and singing, then during the entire game and I dont know how long after the game. Flags waving, scarf waving, jumping left then right in unison. I can't even name it all. It gave me goose bumps when I was there. Makes you want to be a part of it. The love and loyalty is second to none in this country.

I'm pretty sure that Clive Charles is responsible for most of it.

My ignorance prevents me from knowing "Why Rose City"?

They are Soccer City, the rest of the country are just wannabes

I have to say that I want for other cities what we saw in Portland yesterday. I've tried to capture some of what has contributed to the Portland success, but NWSL should take a really good look at the history in Portland.

In addition to other things I've posted, here are a couple of more contributors:

    1. Related to the Portland Pilots fan base that appears to have translated almost directly over to the Thorns: The soccer complex at U of P was built well before the Pilots reached their current level of attendance. It's a gorgeous facility and it is an experience of true soccer beauty to watch a game there. I think Clive Charles' thought was that if you build it, they -- both top players and fans -- will come. If so, he was right.

    2. Jeld-Wen field, though not as beautiful as the complex at U of P, still is a great soccer stadium that allows a good connection between the players and the fans. And relative to a lot of stadia that are not soccer specific, it provides a very clean and pretty picture to fans. You can feel the fan-player connection.

    3. At both U of P (with the Villa Drum Squad) and at Jeld Wen (with the Rose City Riveters), the chants and singing and tifos are part of what makes the games entertaining. They're a blast.

Clive was one who made Soccer popular in the modern era.

Another unhearalded one was Harry Merlo, who owned the original NASL Timbers and brought Clive over from England to play for the team.

Then while Chairman of Louisiana Pacific he donated Merlo Field to UP, long before there were soccer specific stadiums for colleges elsewhere. He still comes to games. Most of the other folks you can point to in the soccer scene here have some connection to Harry.

Portland has been the Rose City since the mid 1800's when teas roses first were brought from Asia by sea captains for their wives. The whole month of June is the Rose festival ever since the 1905 Lewis and Clark exposition. Washington Park has the world famous International Rose Test garden, with almost 600 varieties. The city vehicles have a rose on them.

In the next lesson, I'll tell you why it's also known as Stumptown, Bridgetown, River City, and Rip City. ;)

I would love if they could create a Clive Charles "hologram" somehow, at all the Thorns matches.

I'm wondering if Vancouver does get an expansion team, within the next year or two.
Would Sinclair rather play for Vancouver (in her home country, as she gets older before retirement), or will she want to stay in Portland instead of going to Vancouver?

Along these lines, there's a quote from Clive that I really like. It relates to the NWSL:

"If you want something you’ve got to go out and get it, that’s a rule of life, no matter what or who you are. You can’t expect to be given chances, you’ve got to make the world give you a chance."
