Now that Yorke is gone, United only have 3 true strikers. Most top teams like to carry at least four. Any thoughts on who United might go after?

yep. i think that between Ruud, Ole, Diego and Scholes/Giggsy, we're a-okay on strikers. remember: goal production wasnt a problem last year. we dont need any strikers or mids.
Lets see. Carrol in goal, Phil, Gary, O'shea and probably Wallwork in the back; Butt, Chadwick, Stewart and May in the midfield, and, uh...whatever first teamer will play up top. I still think United's Worthington Cup team is better than most first squads.
Yeah, I know Giggs played striker last year when needed, but I still like him much better on the left side. With all the games that United play, injuries, suspensions, and fatigue can reduce numbers of available players in a hurry. I think they would be smart to have another striker in reserve.
Perhaps Fortune could be getting more play time due to his great showing at the W.C. He was easily one of the more exciting players to watch on one of the more exciting sides in the tournament, and I know he was transfer listed at the start of last season, but he's outlasted Cole, Johnson, Irwin and Yorke so perhaps Fergie wants to keep him around a bit more. And I dont think we do need a fourth striker because we'll be playing a 4-5-1 in Europe and the tougher league games (Silvestre, White, Rio, Gary; Giggs,Veron,Keane,Scholes,Becks;Ruud) and a very strong, slightly different squad for the other matches (Silvestre,Brown,Rio, Phil(escude?); Fortune, Butt, Scholes, Becks/Chadwick; Ole, Giggs/Diego). Realistically, the team is so deep in the midfield that they will spill over into what ever area needs the backup, be it up top or (god forbid with this spending) in the back. We're fine. Let the league begin!
<whew> I could've easily did the same thing in thinking of the wrong player. 4th striker? Maybe Fergie isn't in a hurry to sign one? I would think that DiCanio is out considering his age and other prospects. I doubt ManU is in the mood to spend really, really big. The problem is, IMHO, they need other proven EPL goal scorer unless Fergie is really THAT sure that Forlan is going to establish himself and bag a dozen goals this year. He's still a young pup. IMHO DiCanio would be a good fit in terms of someone with experience, proven, and not too expensive. Yet it doesn't seem that he'll be the one. So who will it be? Damien Duff (a lil' young but somewhat proven)? Robbie Keane? Nuno Gomes (free!)?

Gudjohnsen's a good striker. Like many, he's streaky, but when he's in form, he's as devastating as any in the league.

I think there are two reasons for this "announcement": #1: Since we are the richest club out there buying, we are putting this out there to keep prices from skyrocketing. #2: The funds would be available after we qualify to the Champs League Group phases.
