Here's a thread for those of you with a talent for researching and a love of stats (stand up, SueB): let's determine which Italian player scored the most goals in a European league other than Serie A. Now if we were to include Serie A, players like Riva and Meazza, who scored goals for fun, would be in our reckoning. But the list of players we come up with should focus on goal-scorers like Zola (EPL), Vieri (La Liga), or Ravanelli (EPL). Perhaps, rather than just settling on one name, we could determine the five best given the above criteria? Let the stats-finding begin.
Code: Gianfranco Zola 59 Fabrizio Ravanelli 54 Marco Simone 50 Giuseppe Galderisi 44 Paolo Di Canio 36 Benito Carbone 29 Christian Vieri 24 Based on that page, and after a few updates, this is what I come up with. It might need corrections and other updates.
The highest for Gianfranco Zola at Chelsea was 14 goals. Marco Simone scored 21 goals for Monaco in their championship winning 1999/2000 season.
Thanks ChaChaFut and Cassano for the good work. From what I've gathered so far, Ravanelli wins this thread with 31 goals in 48 appearances for Boro in the 1996-1997 season. I'll continue to look around though.
Well then it looks like: (Cups not Included. Only goals in League Play) 1) Christian Vieri- 1997/98 24 goals 2) Marco Simone- 1999/2000 21 goals 3) Paolo Di Canio- 1999/2000 16 goals 3) Fabrizio Ravanelli- 1996/1997 16 goals 4) Gianfranco Zola- 2002/2003 14 goals 5) Francesco Baiano- 1997/1998 12 goals
But I think that 31 goals includes cups also. If you go by just EPL stats, see list above with Ravanelli.
Well, divide that by two, since in England you have the Carling Cup and the FA Cup, so it might be 8 in one competition and 7 in another.
Click on this link: http://it.sports.yahoo.com/fo/profiles/2898.html It says "97/97 16 gol, 33 partite."
Revised top 10 (RSSSF shows Marco Negri with 32 @ Glasgow Rangers. Also added other scorers since Cassano had it down to a scorer of 12). 1) Marco Negri - 1997/1998 32 goals 2) Christian Vieri - 1997/98 24 goals 3) Marco Simone - 1999/2000 21 goals 4) Fabrizio Ravanelli - 1996/1997 16 goals 4) Paolo Di Canio - 1999/2000 16 goals 6) Gianfranco Zola - 2002/2003 14 goals 7) Marco Simone - 1997/1998 13 goals 7) Fabrizio Ravanelli - 1998/1999 13 goals 9) Paolo Di Canio - 1996/1997 12 goals 9) Francesco Baiano- 1997/1998 12 goals 9) Paolo Di Canio - 1997/1998 12 goals
Nice work, ChaCha. I will rep you when the machine allows me to. What, by the way, were you going to say about Chinaglia?
Well, if you would count non-European leagues, Chinaglia would win hands down. He scored 192 goals in 213 games.
