Chivas USA is starting a group of “women between 21 and 28 years old who speak both Spanish and English to represent the Mexican-owned soccer club.” www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?l_id=&t_id=&id=3101504>
I really hope we don't have cheerleaders or dancers. I go to sports games for the sports. If I want scantily clad women, I can stay home and watch E!. I think they just bastardize the game and cheapen the whole experience. Anyone else agree or am I alone on this?
Speaking as a confirmed heterosexual male, I have to agree with you about the non-need for gratuitous cheapening of the game. It's pretty, but not necessary. And I agree with you about E!, as well.
As a heterosexual FEMALE, I also agree with you. Am I the only one who thought the Blitzz dancers added little to the game day experience? I, for one, would rather see scantily clad men running around the field... Oh wait...
I tell people that I watch soccer for the sexy players, but that's just a joke. As far as you know. My husband has his suspicions.
I wouldn't said yes but I'm still trying to calm down after seeing the T-Wolves dancers opening night. Giddy up!
definitely Dancers/Cheerleaders are not necessary... sometimes excrutiatingly easy on the eyes... yes! but it is not soccer, and they should stay in pointy ball sports with the exception of basketball! We all need something to look at during television timeouts... Oh wait! soccer doesn't have any timeouts so the need for cheerleaders is negated!!!
I don't think the white consevative soccer mom/dad is the audiance Chivas is after with this promotion anyway. In the MFL they have "girls" that make our most racey cheerleaders look overdressed and undersexed. They have used this type of marketing before with great succsess in Mexico...it will work here for their fans and they don't care if you think it bastardizes the game because as i first stated..you are not their audiance and they don't care about you.
Precisely. It is a cultural issue. In the Hispanic culture, a woman’s beauty (read: body) is celebrated.
for "Celebrated"...read blatently exploited. With zero taste and zero intelligence (that's what they think of women). Have you ever watched any of the spanish language stations on cable or satelite? It's just disgusting.
Ya, really, they're not going to get anyone's attention with that marketing. It'll never work. Really.
Enough already. Yes, sex appeal as a marketing ploy works. It's also sometimes tasteless. (See the post above, which is also tasteless, and a certain poster's avatar and corresponding below-avatar statement, which are also tasteless.) (No offense to the aforementioned people... it's nothing personal.) I find the exploitation of men OR women as sex objects tasteless altogether (despite jokes I have made). Whether it's your cultural tradition or not. And yes, I felt this way when I was a size three, not just now that I'm overweight and pregnant. (You may now disregard my comments because I'm one of those weird religious zealots who actually attends church.)
You don't have to be "white", "conservative", or "soccer mom/dad" to not want a bunch of "over cosmetically enhanced", "overly gleeful" bunch of pom-pom bearing bimbos running around on the pitch blocking my view of the match... Take the money that you would pay all of them and invest in a decent player or two.
I don't believe there's a salary cap on Cheerleaders. I don't believe you have to use allocations to acquire them either. Anyway I was just sent a pix of RSL's official cheer group:
how hilarious. I may be white, but I'm not a soccer dad/mom, and I am far from conservative. The reason I don't want cheerleaders is not even because I think it's tasteless (it may be, but that's not the problem I have). I just think it cheapens the game. It would be like spider-man logos and cheerleaders in baseball. NO! I hate gimmicks! I watch sports because I love sports. If I had my way we'd take away all the half-time shows, the mascots, the dancing girls, the t-shirt throws, etc... Just give me pure sport. You'll notice that the most successful franchises are the least gimmicky - The Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs, Notre Dame (not talking wins and losses here) - those stadiums and games don't have all these lame gimmicks and it is like a breath of fresh air. ... no really, I'm FAR from conservative, even though I'm from a red state! I've been told I'll burn in hell for my political/social views!
Took a couple of weeks to come up with that one! The insight you could bring to RSL! We need to save our allocations for the field alas.
Yes, but you don't have your way. They have cheerleaders in baseball in Latin America and Japan (not sure about the rest of Asia). Yes cheerleaders are hardly the ticket to success but I fail to see why people get so bent out of shape over this. As I mentioned before, you can't spend any of this money on players, so what is the big deal?
