    As I did last year, I'll post all the news and results from the Western New York soccer scene. This includes the Big Four (area D-1 schools Buffalo, Canisius, Niagara, and St. Bonaventure) as well as some other local teams of interest (emerging D-3 teams like Medaille College). Here is a preview of the upcoming season from the Buffalo News:

    http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/story/153671.html

    Medaille gets top billing since they went 20-1-1 in 2006 and was the only local team to reach the NCAA tournament (except for Niagara's women). The article has one factual error, Buffalo's goalkeeper, Daniel Bell, was granted an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA and will be back (though he's injured at the moment). In any case, here's some results from the opening weekend:

    Buffalo (0-1, 0-0 MAC)
    * lost to Fairfield 1-0
    * plays Fairleigh Dickinson today

    Canisius (0-1, 0-0 MAAC)
    * lost to UConn 3-2
    * hosts Robert Morris today

    Niagara (0-0, 0-0 MAAC)
    * kicks off season today vs. Cleveland St.

    St. Bonaventure (1-0, 0-0 A-10)
    * beat Cleveland St. 3-1

    Medaille (2-0, 0-0 AMCC)
    * beat Defiance College 6-0
    * beat Bethany College 4-2

    Also of note, Daemen College (a local NAIA school) won the Buffalo State All-America Classic by beating host Buffalo State 2-1 and Hilbert 1-0 (OT).

    I saw that Buffalo keeper Daniel Bell has been awarded a 5th year by the NCAA. I was surprised to see that happen after he played in 4-5 games his frosh year. Thats usually a very difficult thing to do with the NCAA. I always thought that after a couple of games you had no choice but to burn that year.

    Buffalo 2 - Niagara 0
    Buffalo got their first two goals of 2007 as well as their first win of the new campaign by beating Niagara 2-0 in this Western New York derby. A good crowd showed up from both schools since Niagara is just up the road from UB, but the first half remained scoreless. Niagara probably had more possession and creativity in the first half, but Buffalo was much better in the second half. Dave Chojnowski tallied the first goal of the game in about the 65th minute during a scramble after Niagara's keeper fumbled a free kick. Dan Bulley added the insurance goal late on a breakaway in which he juked around the keeper and slotted the ball home. Some poor finishing prevented Buffalo from winning by a bigger margin, and the Bulls were certainly more creative and confident in the second half. Robert Shuttleworth got the clean sheet for Buffalo, however I don't know if Daniel Bell was healthy. Bell began the season injured and missed the season opener, but he played in Buffalo's second game. I have no idea if a goalkeeping controversy is looming or if Bell was simply too dinged up to play. In any case, Shuttleworth has been solid, he's allowed just 1 goal in 2 games. Buffalo is back in action at home on Friday and Sunday, as they host Siena and Central Connecticut respectively. Niagara travels to St. Francis (NY) and Stony Brook this weekend.

    justakid,
    I know that Bell and Buffalo were pleasantly "surprised" when the NCAA granted him an extra year of eligibility. I'm not sure what the criteria was, perhaps they deemed that he didn't play in enough games as a freshman, since he only played in 4 of them before getting hurt (and only 2 were starts). Like I mentioned, he has been battling injuries this year, thus he has only started once. Shuttleworth looked solid tonight, so who knows what the story will be once Bell is healthy.

    Buffalo 1 - Siena 0 (2 OT)
    In a driving rainstorm, Alex Marrello slotted home a rebound to give the Bulls a 1-0 victory over Siena. Buffalo has rebounded from last weekend's 0-2 start to even up their record at 2-2. The Bulls dominated most of the game, but strong winds and then heavy rain made the conditions less than desirable. A few key saves by Siena's keeper kept the game scoreless through regulation. Robert Shuttleworth was again in goal for UB, I still don't know what's up with Daniel Bell. Another good crowd showed up, including a rowdy group of supporters for UB. Next up for Buffalo, Central Connecticut on Sunday.

    Central Connecticut 1 - St. Bonaventure 0
    In the first game of the Buffalo Fall Classic, Central Connecticut knocked off St. Bonaventure 1-0 on Conor Smith's first half goal. The Bonnies fall to 1-2 while the Blue Devils improve to 1-1.

    Ohio Wesleyan 2 - Medaille 0
    In a battle between two nationally ranked D3 schools, #10 Ohio Wesleyan defeated the visiting #22 Medaille Mavericks 2-0. Medaille falls to 3-1 on the season, and plays Capital University on Saturday in the second leg of the Adidas Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan. It should be interesting to see how Medaille's season plays out as they've upgraded their schedule, perhaps at the urging of Bill Archer!

    Canisius and Niagara were both idle tonight

    Buffalo 1 - Central Connecticut 0
    On a wet and rainy Sunday afternoon, Buffalo beat Central Connecticut 1-0 to win the UB Fall Classic. Finnish Freshman Juha Kaartoluoma scored the game winner late in the first half, a header after a free kick bounced around inside the box. Both teams had some decent chances, Central Connecticut had two corner kick plays come very close to equalizing, one hit the crossbar and the other forced an incredible save by Robert Shuttleworth. Shuttleworth continues to have the hot hand in net for the Bulls, as he recorded his 3rd straight shutout. Buffalo controlled most of the possession and continues to be well-organized in the back (except for corner kick marking). I think the only thing that's really going to prevent them from contending in the MAC is they are missing a creative attacking player like they had in Andrae Clarke last year. The offense has some nice parts, Dan Stevens is nice on the left wing, Dan Bulley has played well as a target man, but they really miss the composure and skill of Clarke and Brian Knapp on the ball. After seeing this team play three times this week, they're much improved, particularly in possession, but they need a better spark offensively as they've tallied only 4 goals in 5 games. Buffalo improves to 3-2 on the season and next plays at St. Bonaventure on Friday.

    Medaille 1 - Capital 1
    In a game shortened to only 72 minutes because of lightning, Medaille rallied for a 1-1 tie with Capital University on Saturday. The Mavericks were ranked #22 in the D3 ranks, and their record now stands at 3-1-1.

    Shuttleworth Earns MAC Player of the Week
    No surprise here as Buffalo's Robert Shuttleworth was named MAC Player of the Week. Why isn't it a surprise? Anytime a goalkeeper goes 3-0 with 3 shutouts in a week, they're going to get some recognition. Kudos on an oustanding week of performances!

    Medaille 13 - D'Youville 0
    Medaille improved to 4-1-1 by pounding local rival D'Youville College, outshooting them 47-2 in the second largest win in school history. Kendell McFayden had a hat trick for the Mavericks.

    justakid,
    I haven't heard what's up with Bell. It might be that Coach Astudillo has been sticking with Shuttleworth because he's the hot hand, or Bell could've re-aggravated his injury. Bell missed the first game, played the second, but hasn't played since, so your guess is as good as mine. I'll try to find out more...

    Results from the past week (through September 23):

    Division 1

    Buffalo 5-3-1 (0-0 MAC)
    * tied Bucknell 2-2 (2 OT)
    * lost to Detroit 0-1
    * notes: Daniel Bell started in goal on Sunday for UB's loss at Detroit. It was Bell's first start since the season opener. Robert Shuttleworth started in Friday's draw with Bucknell. Bell was coming off a wrist injury and, coupled with Shuttleworth's outstanding play, hadn't been able to crack the lineup despite holding many of UB's goalkeeping records. It should be interesting to see who gets the start in their next match.

    Canisius 1-5-0 (0-0 MAAC)
    * lost to Western Michigan 0-2
    * lost to St. Bonaventure 1-2 (2 OT)

    Niagara 1-4-1 (0-0 MAAC)
    * tied Duquesne 2-2 (2 OT)
    * lost to Bucknell 0-1

    St. Bonaventure 2-3-1 (0-0 A-10)
    * beat Canisius 2-1 (2 OT)

    Division 3

    Medaille 7-1-1 (1-0 AMCC)
    * beat Daemen 3-1
    * beat LaRoche 2-1

    Well, it was certainly necessary if they want to step up from "solid team" to "elite" status.

    It does seem odd that they've looked to Ohio to do it. Nevertheless, although playing harmless little Defiance College doesn't do much for me, Defiance Ohio is probably six hours from Buffalo. Seems odd to go all that way to play a really nothing team. Hell, they drove BY 12 or 15 better D3 schools just to get there.

    But the tournament in Columbus, that's promising. Playing outfits like Ohio Wesleyan, who could handle a lot of D1 schools, and Capital, which is always tough in the extremely competitive OCC conference, is a promising step.

    There is so much competition in upstate New York though, within an hour and a half of them (and certainly Case, one of the ones they drove by in Ohio, is much much closer) that it seems strange to go al that way. Nevertheless, it's nice to see.

    They do have some feisty competition this year though; Lake Erie is going up to D2 next year and is beefing up, and boy do they look tough - fast, deep and talented, and for this year at least they're still an in-conference challlenge like they haven't seen (IIRC Medaille only joined the AMCC a couple years ago). Behrend returned almost everybody from the one team they struggled with last Fall, and Penn State Altoona is young but coming together..

    Which is good for them because the rest of the conference is a walkover. Last year, Pitt Bradford came out of nowhere, reallly played some strong, disciplined soccer, played everybody in the conference except Medaille toe-to-toe, made the conference tournament, almost made the ECAC tourney and was starting to scare people. Unfortunately, the first year coach, who was named conference coach of the year, left and took a job as an assistant at Wisconsin and most of the team either quit or transferred. Bradford may not win a game this year.

    So instead of having five good and five horrid teams they now have foru good tems and six horrid ones, and none of the bottom six look like there's much chance they'll get better within our lifetimes.

    So Medaille is gonna have to step up their non-conference schedule, because when they get to the NCAA's they ain't playing D'Youville or Hilbert any more.

    Honestly, I think Lake Erie College will beat them this year (that would be a good one to see if you were gonna catch them once, but it's away this year) and Behrend has a shot. Not the stroll through the roses this year.

    Results from the weekend of September 29:

    Buffalo 7-3-1 (1-0 MAC)
    * beat Bowling Green 3-2 (OT)
    * beat Duquesne 1-0

    Canisius 1-7-0 (0-0 MAAC)
    * lost to Quinnipiac 0-5
    * lost to Cleveland State 0-1

    Niagara 2-5-1 (0-0 MAAC)
    * lost to St. Bonaventure 1-2
    * beat Cleveland State 4-3

    St. Bonaventure 3-3-1 (0-0 A-10)
    * beat Niagara 2-1

    Medaille 8-1-2 (2-0-1 AMCC)
    * tied Frostburg 1-1 (2 OT)
    Notes: With the tie, Medaille falls into second place in the AMCC where only Penn State Altoona maintains a perfect record (PSU-Behrend and Lake Erie both lost this weekend). Medaille outshot Frostburg 23-10 but had difficulty beating goalkepper Jay Herford, who saved a penalty kick in the second overtime period. Altoona travels to Buffalo on October 14 in a game that could decide the conference's regular season champion.

    In a frantic finish, Buffalo scored two goals in the final seven minutes of regulation, including Dan Stevens' game-tying goal in the 90th minute, to tie the Billikens. Marc Stencel and Dan Bulley scored for Buffalo (7-3-2, 1-0 MAC).

    Canisius 3 - Niagara 0
    Canisius stunned local MAAC rival Niagara with a 3-0 win. Alan McGreal, last year's Metro Atlantic Rookie of the Year, scored twice to pace the Golden Griffins (2-7-0, 1-0 MAAC). McGreal now has 5 goals in 2007 and 11 goals in 25 career games. Niagara falls to 2-6-1 (0-1 MAAC).

Medaille hosts Altoona on Sunday and this matchup is huge as they remain the only unbeaten teams in the AMCC (although Medaille trails Altoona in the standings because they tied Frostburg earlier in the season). The winner likely takes the regular season title and would host the conference tournament.
