You know the ones. ... you can't get them out of your mind --- mainly because they won't stop playing them. Here are my ten best, off the top of my head, no order The Chain -- Fleetwood Mac Running On Empty -- Jackson Browne The Logical Song -- SuperTramp The Immigrant Song -- Led Zeppelin Time- Pink Floyd Layla -- Derek and the Dominoes Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress -- the Hollies Old Man -- Neil Young Sundown -- Gordon Lightfoot You're So Vain -- Carly Simon
David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes Led Zeppelin - Kashmir Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights, Wow Dexies Midnight Runners - Geno Roxy Music - Angel Eyes
Rock-n-Roll Hoochie Koo You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet Are we talking classic rock here or just anything from the seventies?
I'm with you, Mattbro, Conor's list doesn't ring a bell at all Others that are always played on classic rock radio: More than a Feeling - Boston Heartbreaker and Stairway - Led Zeppelin (not Immigrant Song) Boddhisatva - Steely Dan Bad Company - Bad Company Fantasy - Aldo Nova Show Me the Way - Frampton
Ah, you see Ghosts original list contained songs by The Hollies, Supertramp and Carly Simon, and I would have thought they were classified as pop acts, so I thought anything goes. And they're often dusted down this side of the Atlantic Ocean, whereas I can safely say that I am the only person under 30 who knows Boddhisatva in County Kerry, Ireland (pop. c. 130,000)! I can honestly say that there are acts that get to the top of the Billboard chart in the USA (eg. Tim McGraw, Debbie Gibson) that don't enter the top 50 in the UK and Ireland.
Dream On -- Aerosmith....the birth of the rock power ballad. Tom Sawyer -- Rush Hotel California -- The Eagles Bennie and the Jets (well actually any song from Grt Hits vol 1) --Elton John Stranglehold -- Ted Nugent Rock and Roll All Night -- KISS kinda pop, but Piano Man -- Billy Joel
Good call on Hotel California Aimer - how could I have forgotten that one? How about that Black Betty song?
I also learned when I lived in Texas for awhile that Stevie Ray Vaughn is a god on classic rock radio there. In 2-1/2 years, I'd heard enough of that guy to last a lifetime. Here in the San Francisco area, it leans towards Journey and the Dead
Foghat's "Fool for the City" or "I Just Want to Make Love to You" Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" or "Godzilla"
For the most part, definitions are up to you all. I would say that Disco, Punk and early wave are out of bounds. Beyond that, have at it. It's as much yoiur discussion as it is mine.
Different horses for different courses. While I've heard of thew Grateful Dead, and I know the impact they have had on American music culture in the past 30 years, and I know Journey insofar as you will hear the odd song by Journey, REO Speedwagon, Toto, Survivor or those AOR bands etc. on VH1 or MTV, and I know of Vaughan because his death got a small bit of coverage hear, you could honestly go from one end of the week to the next on all the popular stations in Ireland and you will not hear a song by any of them. On the other hand, U2, Simple Minds, 80's acts like Duran Duran, The Human League, 90's British acts like Oasis, The Verve, Blur, Suede and a host of other British groups take up all the time here. I was 27 when I heard Rush for the first time and I believbe they're big in the States/Canada. The difference is unusual. Oasis played to 250,000 at Knebworth, England a few years back yet couldn't sell any decent venue stateside. At the big Irish outdoor concert this summer, bands like The Prodigy, Oasis and Basement Jaxx were headlining, while The Foo Fighters, Sonic Youth and No Doubt were down the list.
