There won't be Relegation in MLS for a while so maybe...

The Team that sucks and should be relegated, even though not possible, should be awarded a MLS Division II Club Shield.

Or the one that escaped relegation 9th Team in MLS would get something. That would give the fans something to cheer for...when they know their team won't make the play offs.

I think you'd save a lot of time if you just made a dozen and sent them to Foxboro.

Over the years, there have been a lot of ideas posted at BigSoccer. This is one of them.

I thought it was rather funny =)

"The I'm Glad We Aren't In The Rest Of The Footballing World Award"

And instead of stars on their jerseys for winning they get something else? An arrow pointing down perhaps?

Who would have won this award in the past.

    1996
    Colorado Rapids 29 pts

    1997
    San Jose Clash 30 pts

    1998
    N.E. Revolution 29 pts

    1999
    MetroStars 15 pts

    2000
    San Jose Earthquakes 29 pts

    2001
    Tampa Bay Mutiny 14 pts

So San Jose wins for being relegated twice!

I demand a recount! I can't believe the Revs have won only once. (Unless you count post-season, where our ONE career victory will be tough to top...)

It was only a stupid point because it shows how even though you can win an mls cup, overall you suck.

And he's a cyberays fan you know.

I think the Relegation Supporters' Shield winner (loser?) should get to start play in the Lamar Hunt trophy in the same round as Hannover American-Hungarians next year.

I usually lump all teams that did not make the playoffs into a realm of relegation, since in American sports culture, it's all about the playoffs so to speak.

The Consolation Shield was conceived as an idea years ago when we were speaking about "awarding" an actual MLS last place (wooden spoon)trophy and what such a trophy might look like. It looks snazzy but it actually is a very cheap trophy in trophy shops. The shiny plate is generic and not real metal. If officially adopted, it could be a fun league tradition given the fact that we don't have relegation.
If nothing else, it's fun to award the cyber version on BigSoccer wooden spoon threads!:p:D

Since we don't have pro-rel, I have always felt not making the playoffs was essentially being "relegated out of the playoffs". You were on the outside looking in.
Don't they call this the "wooden spoon" in England? Is that for all divisions or just certain ones?
All joking aside, yes, league stats should include the worse team each year. We need to put more pressure on teams, players and owners to put more meaning and edge to the regular season, rather than trying to put all the attention and hype on a stupid, abbreviated playoff.

    To round out this list...
    1996 - Colorado Rapids, 29 pts
    1997 - San Jose Clash, 30 pts
    1998 - N.E. Revolution, 29 pts
    1999 - MetroStars, 15 pts
2000- San Jose Earthquakes, 29 pts
    2001 - Tampa Bay Mutiny, 14 pts
    2002 - DC United. 32 pts
    2003 - Dallas Burn, 23 pts
    2004 - N.E. Revolution/Chicago Fire, 33 pts (both=8-3-9)
    2005 - Chivas USA, 18 pts
    2006 - Columbus Crew, 33 pts
    2007 - Toronto FC, 25 pts
    2008 - San Jose Earthquakes/LA Galaxy, 33 pts (both=8-13-9)
    2009 - NY Red Bulls, 21 pts
    2010 - DC United, 22 pts
    2011 - N.E. Revolution/Vancouver Whitecaps, 28 pts (Revs=5-16-13, Caps=6-18-10)
    2012 - Toronto FC (TBC)

I kept the ties, as I guess we Supporters, as the awarding party of this "Relegation Shield," would have to determine tie-breakers for the worst of the worst!

Looks like NE and San Jose tie it up, 3 apiece. Don't worry guys, good 'ol TFC will be caught up in no time!

for all your wooden spoon question needs...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wooden_spoon_(award)

It's really only used in competitions where there is no relegation. A light-hearted ribbing isn't really needed for a club that's been dispatched to the depths below.
