It's a media invention. We've always been the Mags and always will be.

Is 'Barcode Army' either considered unacceptable or derogatory, then?

Doesn't Toon Army just refer to the fans? Never the team. Mags though, that can be applied to the team AND its supporters, yes?

As Rome would say, "Hilarious, absolutely Hilarious".

Yeah- that "Toon Army" appears to have been used out of context in my original post, all apologies to those who lost sleep.

That's pure comedy. Rome is brilliant, sucks on TV but brilliant in the Jungle.

I dont really know anything about the Magpies roster can someone enlighten me- whose gonna sport #9? Owen even though he's injured? Who is the next candidate, or if nobody is worthy will they just not assign it...

the ironic thing is, is that we're all fans of the jim rome show and like soccer...the one sport that rome deplores. lol.

Actually I think Michael owen will still be number 9

2 things as I continue to learn... What in the Sane Hell is a Magpie? Secondly, as supporters what odds do you give NUFC of winning it all this year.

And also, What does "Haway the lads" mean?

    Thanks

When you say 'winning it all' you don't mean winning the premiership do you? That's already been bought and paid for in rubles.

This year would be historical if we won the 1. FA Cup 2. UEFA Cup 3. League Cup and/or 4. finished in the top four, qualifying for Champions League.

Realistically in the league, it would be a very good year if we finished in the top 6.

Magpies are little black and white birds. I'd gather we get the nickname because of the colours. Usually we're either called the Magpies or the Barcodes, mostly the Magpies.

As for the 'haway the lads' bit, that's a Geordie-originated cheer in support of the club.

Expectations: We'll have a great year if we get into Champions League or win one of the domestic cups or the Uefa Cup. Newcastle are a club which is pretty much expected to be at worst in the Uefa Cup every year, which usually means a top six finish.

Not all of us. I don't like his smack shctick and this goes for all sports he rants on.

Plus he went to UC Santa Barbara and as Cal State Fullerton Titan fan, I'm obligated to hate.

I haven't heard his radio show...and I don't like his TV show. Or his face. Or his voice.

Hi my name is John, and I'm a Toonaholic. Yes, I'm from the U.S., don't hate.

I've been following the Magpies since Fox Soccer Channel came to the U.S. No, I haven't been to a game but I hope to. It might be a little while since I just spent all my weak U.S. dollars at World Cup and the dollar gets weaker.

My daughter loves Liverpool so I am thinking of going to that game one day, although I don't know if I want to be sitting near her during this game.

Why I love New U- Alan Shearer, Scott Parker (doesn't he look like Michael Owen?), James Milner, Given, and Dyer; previous player- Jermaine Jenas, St. James Park (from what I've seen on television), it's not a London team, the fans are loud and proud even when behind, not too many fair weathered fans- they will start joining when New U starts impressing this year, the nickname, the kits, etc.

One question I hope you can help me with, I was proudly displaying my New U kit in Berlin during the Ukraine-Tunisia game when these three blokes in red, I think Sunderland or Southampton fans, smiled and yelled at me. They said something like, who are ya, who are ya? I didn't know how to respond, I felt like I let down the Magpies.

If they were Sunderland fans they wouldn't have been smiling, or perhaps had no teeth.
