I am a newspaper reporter and I was just out at this weekend function here in Georgia, and I saw this white, red-headed, middle class teenager wearing a knockoff jersey of the Mexican National Team. Should I have ... a) been happy and optimistic to see that a youngster thinks it's cool to wear a soccer jersey in a big group of teenagers or b) cracked a beer bottle over his head for daring to wear the jersey of the arch-enemy on American soil. Granted I'm not sure how that would go over, given that I was on duty and it was a church-related function. I'm just asking for future reference.
Be glad he was wearing a jersey. I know all kinds of people that wear jerseys and apperal(sp?) for teams they have no connections with. They either like the colors or think the team is cool.
If it's a church function doesn't one have the moral obligation to set the kid straight? Furthermore, aren't we all "on duty" all the time when it comes to soccer?
And how could a good church-going kid wear the jersey of the devil's team? I could have claimed the "holy water" was all part of an exorcism, given his team of choice.
if it was holy water he probably could've done something wholly different with the bottle. p.s. anyone else see the Pope drooling this weekend while giving mass?
Be glad he was wearing a jersey. I know all kinds of people that wear jerseys and apperal(sp?) for teams they have no connections with. They either like the colors or think the team is cool. Exactly...my ex-hubby took a vacation to Cancun and brought our daughter back a Mexican National Team Jersey which she promptly wore to school because it was "cool". And she has no love at all for the Mexican National Team - especially Hernandez...she thinks he dives so much because he's old and can't beat the younger players unless he cheats. Of course, she also thinks anyone who plays soccer, is over 26, and can't run like Donovan & Beasley needs to retire!! But, the best part of the story is that my daughter said all the kids at school said "ewww...cool jersey, but that team is so dirty!!" Lots of knowledgeable 6th graders here!
C) Walked up to him and asked him where he got the jersey, thereby finding out if he even knows it's a soccer jersey, much less a Mexican soccer jersey. Who knows, maybe the kid has 20 jerseys at home and he was only wearing this one because it pisses off his father (who's a huge US soccer fan who grew up in the same neighborhood as did Josh Wolff and Clint Mathis and can't stand any American - much less his son! - supporting Mexico).
Eddie's a priest? cool. I'm going to have to start going to church again. actually no, because sunday morning is soccer playing time.
Well! Isn't that just special? We find a soccer jersey on the rack at the local den of conspicuous consumption. It's got pretty colors. It's priced right. How convenient! We break a few commandments: Worshiping another God. Bowing down to a graven image. Disrespecting a church-related function. Wearing a knockoff instead of a licensed product. Coveting something that belongs to our neighbor. Could it be someone has led us down this evil path? Could it be someone is whispering in our ear, "Mexico! Mexico! Mexico!"? Could it be, oh, I don't know... SATAN?!?!?
If it's a church-related function, there is only one recourse. Beat the ************er senseless with a the good book. That's what it was made for to bring the wrath of god down upon the heathens.
Wearing non-American jerseys Okay.. as a soccer fan you have the inalienable right to wear a CLUB jersey for any team in the world. Yes we should all support our local MLS teams.. but nothing wrong with wearing and EPL, Liga, Serie A etc... club team jersey. As far as wearing national team jerseys... there's only one you can wear if you consider yourself an American... let me give you a hint.. its white with red/blue strips on the side (or any past version for us old timers). To wear any other nation's team shirt, especially from that disgrace of a football team Mejico, should be treated as nothing less than treason... punishable with life w/o parole in a Federal Prison. Sincerely yours, George W. Bush
Umm....How did you find this thread????? I do have to agree with you though. My nephew, who is 100% American but ethnically 3/4 Mexican and 1/4 Filipino, also had red hair when he was younger and was as white as an albino. Regardless I talk smack to anyone wearing an El Tri jersey unless I know for sure they are from Mexico.
Seriously, a 5 yo thread?? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I was on campus when US played Mexico earlier this year and I went down to the hall store to grab a pizza during halftime. A (white, American) buddy of mine was working and I noticed he was wearing a knock-off Mexico jersey. I informed him of his treason and made him pay for my pizza. He felt guilty and obliged.
I'm an American who lived several years in Mexico working... I met and knew many Mexicans who looked many different ways.. For example, In Mexico City I was friends with an entire family of Mexicans of 100% Irish decent. Three generations. They were big Cruz Azul fans... I knew Korean/Mexicans and German/Mexicans... ... The question posed by this thread is based on an assumption.. A reporter should not make assumptions..
I think that if the US Mens kit needs to be redesigned. It should not be a standard adidas or nike design, it should be unique and visually kick-ass. Mexico's jersey looks substantially nicer than the US Jersey. My favorite colors are blue and red, US flag has both those so why does the US Kit look so lame?
