Re: the best of the southern clubs not including Napoli I forgot about Salernitana even though they weren't a good side. They were in Serie A in the 1998-99 season and Marco Di Vaio scored 13 goals in that season.
Re: the best of the southern clubs not including Napoli How about Cagliari? Scudetto winners in 1970. Frequent participants in Serie A.
Re: the best of the southern clubs not including Napoli I had just looked at a map of Italy but I'm still not sure Sardegna is classified as a Southern region. I've assumed that it belongs to the middle.
Re: the best of the southern clubs not including Napoli Yeah Sardegna has a wierd status. It's essentially southern for all intensive purposes, or at least closest to the south than anyone else. I've always thought of them as south myself. Sardus?
define "best" for us and I'll vote....if you are talking most passionate fan base then yes Palermo would be next...
I think he means historically. I would vote for Cagliari, assuming they can be considered a southern club.
Historically. Maybe I should have specified a decade because it looks like Cagliari will win hands down.
I just merged the two threads. Cagliari has to be historically the best Southern club besides Napoli, winning the Scudetto with Gigi Riva leading the way. And didn't they go far in the UEFA cup in the early 90's?
Thanks, Cassano. Some of Italy's squad at Mexico 70 played with Cagliari, not just Riva. Albertosi, Domenghini, De Sisti and Cera were part Cagliari's scudetto winning team as well as the Squadra Azzurra. Cagliari reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1994 defeating Juve in the quarter-finals 3-1 on aggregate. Inter knocked out Cagliari 5-3 on aggregate and Cagliari had won the first leg 3-2.
No doubt: Avellino, 10 years in Serie A from 1978 to 1987, ever defeating at home Milan, Inter, Juventus, Roma, Napoli ..... Champions as Tacconi and Vignola (Juventus), Juary and Dirceu from Brazil, Argentinian Ramon Diaz (Inter), Barbadillo from Peru, Italian National Team members De Napoli and Bagni have played with us. Forza Lupi! www.pianetabiancoverde.it Cagliari is not seen here in Italy as a Southern Team.
if we're talking about results, then there shouldnt even be a vote, because results speak for themselves and cant be argued with (unless your juve or milan who purchase results)........... but if we talk about the best club in terms of fans then we hit another wall, because how do we define best fans?.... the numbers of which they turn out to stadiums? some regions and city's have a smaller population and therefore smaller fan base........... maybe we can judge the best club based on what they do for their fans.... Reggina for example have had days where school kids can come watch for free...... its a tough thread............ if you ask me, Reggina is the best club in the history of the universe .... but thats just me
Re: the best of the southern clubs not including Napoli If it wasn't part of Due Sicilie, then its not really part of the South IMO. For the same reason most of Lazio (including Rome) isn't in the south. Completely different history. I think historically Bari has been in Serie A next most... Palermo today seem to "feel like" the natural #2 after Napoli. After that its Catania and Lecce.
