But once you factor in availability, you end up with a largely European-based team on call ups for FIFA dates and a largely MLS team on call ups for non-FIFA dates. And I thought that having two separate USMNTs was what you were trying to avoid.

With the alacrity that MLS is selling young Americans to Europe, any realistic expectation is that international break rosters will be almost completely, if not all foreign-league based. I mean, in the last year, MLS has sold, I'm sure I'm missing a bunch: Dike, Pepi, Paredes, Slonino, Djordje, Aaronson, Clark. who else? 2 of those guys are on this roster. Would others be in the mix if they were in MLS and getting PT?

What other MLS guys have been sold to Europe in the past year?

There are, what, 7* as many FIFA dates, as non ones, in a typical year? And the non FIFA dates are against opponents who also can largely only get releases from 2nd and 3rd rate leagues. So these are fringe opportunities and really bonus camps.

Beyond that, I think you should just call up the best roster available (which is going to be around 3/4 players abroad), to achieve whatever the short or long term objective is. I don't believe it does that having virtually one or the other, especially at the start of the cycle where integration is the primary objective. So it's just adding to potential factionalism while not maximizing the short or long term objectives - winning, roster building, chemistry, etc.

In GC, I'd probably tap into Europe more than Hudson projects to, since it's on a FIFA date, and players abroad have varying different situations. It certainly wouldn't look like last b-team GC. I'd call up all the players who are in stable situations, that serve the aforementioned objectives.

My thought on the relative lack of MLS players in this roster is that there is some type of deal in the works here. First, MLS is playing through the window. Second, we have friendly games in April.

MLS has so many NT players from around the world that keeping their USMNT players in March would really help a team or two for those games. In exchange, USMNT will be able to get thorough look at MLS players in April. I don't think this is anything particularly new, before we had NL fill up our windows we would have a European window and an MLS window.

What was the theory on why Tillman was omitted again?

Tillman had an injury. He came on as a sub today.
It looks like Super Lig will be playing through the international window, which is understandable, given the time lost with the earthquake. Wright's being left off makes sense.

This camp is more or less a trade off for April (and January), but absolutely, as more and more of our best players go to the top leagues in Europe, we simply won't have a lot from MLS. We shouldn't exclude any league; it will just be true.

If we go back a few years, when most European teams weren't looking to MLS and most MLS teams weren't selling, players in this camp like Pepi, Dike, Scally, McKenzie, etc, etc, would very possibly all be in MLS.

Of course, then the weird conspiracy theorists will just say this new coach isn't bought -- like they are already currently doing -- instead of just acknowledging the shift in attitudes amongst European teams and MLS teams on selling.

the players referred to as "the mls guys" arent, and havent, been sold. nobody was talking about pepi or aaronson being questionable callups.

arriola, lletget, zim, etc- they arent moving on to bigger and better things.

Well, I'm not surprised. It's a terribly written paragraph.

    I was saying...

    1. This camp has basically no MLS players in part because they have the April game and USSF basically traded leaving guys home here for releases then.

    2. Agreeing with you on the broader point that while there's less MLS guys in the overall roster, it's in large part because many of the guys in the roster have been sold from MLS.

    3. Just generally saying that we shouldn't be excluding players from MLS or any other league as a rule, but that because the better young players in MLS will be sold, there will be less options for a while.

So yeah, just me being unclear.

Some guys were left off due to injury management. So Tillman was not likely to be a replacement since he was an injury scratch to begin with.

I always find it strange how many people view every roster as having to be a definitive A team / depth chart.

It's a Nations League window where we shouldn't need every top guy, it's right after the World Cup, of course you are going to give some guys some rest to get healthy or work to get a spot.

So from the looks of it Balogun wasn’t called into the England camp? There is still hope at this point.

Does stepping on the field for a U-21 game tie him to England, or just senior team performances? . (I should know this by now.. )

If it is a competitive match, it provisionally cap ties him to England. He might already be -- I don't know.

He's already played for the U-21s so if he's provisionally cap-tied or not it's already happened. There was some argument about this and the results are inconclusive.
