    Time to start a new thread for 2023.

    The link for the 2022 thread can be found at Stanford University 2022 [R]

    Mia Bhuta, Joelle Jung, and Maryn Wolf have decided to start uni life early.

    Stanford have confirmed the [presumptively fall] signings of Erica Grillione, Shae Harvey, and Alyssa Savig.

    There is deafening silence on Alyssa Thompson.

    Perhaps the whispers of her skipping college and signing as an NWSL Discovery Player is more than idle chatter .....

    Thompson would need to go through the normal NWSL draft according to the rules. She turned 18 years old in November:

    https://www.houstondynamofc.com/hou...details-for-2023-nwsl-draft-presented-by-ally

    In order to be eligible for the 2023 NWSL Draft, a player must:

    • Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or a foreign national who is currently or was enrolled at a university in the United States during the 2022-23 academic year
    • Be an individual who has exhausted, lost, or renounced their remaining collegiate eligibility during the 2022 calendar year, including high school graduates choosing to forego;
    • Be at least 18 years old on or before January 1, 2023;
    • Not be under a current professional contract, nor have previously signed a contract to play soccer professionally;
    • Players must register for the 2023 NWSL Draft by 11:59 pm ET on Monday, January 9, 2023.

    She could forego the draft route and go the discovery route.

    Are people worried she will not come to Stanford?

    Below is the Discovery Eligibility rule. At this point, Thompson is not draft eligible for the current draft because she has not registered for the draft (which is one of the requirements to be eligible). I am not sure what it means to be eligible for a future draft since she is not in college, but apparently she can renounce her college eligibility at any time she wants. The draft eligibility rule you set out, in the second bullet, is odd because it appears to say she must have renounced her college eligibility in 2022 in order to be eligible for the current draft. She appears not to have done that in 2022. Nevertheless, the LA Times is reporting that sources say she is planning to enter the current draft.

    Of course, with the NWSL, it sometimes appears that where there is a will there is a way, so maybe they will find their way around the language of the draft eligibiity rule and LA will draft her.

    Also, I cannot find an official list of who is in the USWNT player pool. If she is in the pool, she is not discovery eligible.

    [You can find the NWSL draft and roster rules at the NWSL website. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look under the heading The Game. This is where you can find all of the NWSL rules. You can get a link to the Roster Rules, where the discovery rules are, by clicking first on Rules and Policies and then on Roster Rules.]

    Eligibility
    Individuals are Discovery Eligible and may be added to a Team’s Discovery List if they meet the following criteria:
    1. The Individual does not currently have a valid SPA with the NWSL;
    2. The Individual does not have their Rights controlled by a Team;
    3. The Individual is not eligible for a current or future NWSL Draft, as determined by the NWSL;
    4. The Individual is at least 17 years of age; and
    5. The Individual is not in the USWNT Player Pool.

    I think you are making statements that you do not really know are true. If she notifies the NWSL she is foregoing college eligibility, that would seem to satisfy the discovery player rule. This, if I recall correctly, is how it worked for Moultrie after her lawsuit. It would be similar to foregoing further eligibility in order to qualify for the draft.

    Regarding the draft, I read the requirement as that for the current draft the player must have renounced eligibility in 2022:

    Be an individual who has exhausted, lost, or renounced their remaining collegiate eligibility during the 2022 calendar year
    Maybe Thompson did renounced her eligibiity in 2022 or maybe she lost it by some sort of endorsement contract, but if so I do not think there has been a public announcement of it.

    As a lawyer (retired), this is how I read the NWSL rules.

    I do agree, however, that it looks like she is going to be in the draft, whether it will be consistent with the rules or not. Either that or a whole bunch of people have not done their homework.

    The USWNT Player Pool, I believe, is a formal list of players. I do not know whether it includes all of the players on the preliminary roster, and I very much doubt that it does.

    Moultrie was under age. So the comparison is not equivalent. Thompson is 18 years old.

    I don't think we have the same understanding of renouncing eligibility. It is just the obvious consequence when you declare for the draft in any sport. You are 'giving up' your remaining eligibility. There doesn't have to be a public announcment of it. So if she submits her name in the draft, she is renouncing her eligibility. For all we know her paperwork has been in the NWSL hands for days. It is only January 5th. So 2022 was 5 days ago.

    That said, there is an out for players who are not drafted:

    Per NCAA rules, an undrafted player can retain their elgibility if they notify their athletic director within 72 hours of the draft. See #4:

    Congrats to our young goaltender Kaiya Jota on committing to Stanford University. Even at 16 y.o. she already earned her first cap for the PWNT and is leading the Philippine U20 national women's team to the AFC U20 women's qualifiers next month.

    Sorry but Kaiya Jota is part of the 2024 recruiting class where she has committed early to Stanford and not for 2023.

    It was unintentional caused by the carelessness of one our centerbacks who got dispossessed of the ball close to the penalty box.

    It didn't matter as despite being down a player for 80', the Philippines controlled ball possession using short passes almost the entire game and ended up winning 1-0.

    Kaiya played well to that point. She has a bright future ahead of her.

    The Philippines ended up 2nd to powerhouse China in their group though(4 teams) so they didn't advance to the 2nd round of the AFC U20 qualifiers. Considering the all amateur Philippines U20 WNT only got together a week and a half before the tournament and China's all pro U20 WNT has been playing weekly in the 2nd Division of their pro league for months now, finishing 2nd in the group was not entirely unexpected and an acceptable result for the team.

    After serving her red card penalty in the next game the other day, Kaiya should be available to play and start again in the AFF U19 Championships in July or even earlier in the SEA Games in May with the seniors since the latter tournament is outside the FIFA calendar which means that clubs might not release our pros during this time frame giving her an opportunity to start.

    Kaiya was just awarded Mission Valley League’s Best Defensive Player Of The Year Award.

    It looked like Kaiya and the rest of the team were having fun at the AFC U20 girl's championships off the field though as they bonded at the AFC U20 qualifiers as demonstrated by a vlog by one of their teammates including singing along on a karaoke bus with disco lights and organizing impromptu pajama dance parties.

    It is too bad the other Fil Ams at Stanford U (Maya Doms, Madison Ayson, Nya Harrison and Kellie Pagador) were never able to experience this when they were eligible to play at this age level a few years ago.

    BTW I noticed that Maya Doms didn't declare for the NWSL draft. Is she playing a 5th year for Stanford U next fall?

    They have a lot returning - the starting goalie and 3 of 4 starting defenders. They also get back players who scored 90% of the goals (freshmen scored 50%). The incoming freshman class looks very good, even with the loss of Thompson. Keep your fingers crossed for good health.

    The "intent" was rendered immaterial since it was irrefutably DOGSO-H 28 yards from goal. Automatic send-off.

    On a more interesting development --- Did you know the Thompsons have Filipino ancestry? 13th para

    Maybe if the PFF were insistent enough, there might be a chance to snag Gisele .....

    Yes I know, but they are committed to the USWNT. Alyssa is a potential superstar for them and both sisters were signed and promoted by Nike while the PWNT is sponsored by Adidas so there is a potential conflict of interest there in terms of marketing.

    The US usually gets priority when it comes to dual citizens.

    For example, Stanford U's Nya Harrison's sister Ava Harrison actually attended the Philippine U17 tryouts last January after helping the US win the U15 CONCACAF Championship last year but since she still doesn't have a Philippine passport she decided to accept the invitation to join the US U16WNT training camp last month.

    BTW the goalkeeper is allowed to be outside the penalty area and handle the ball with her feet. She just isn't allowed to have hand or arm contact with it.

    The roster includes current players Elise Evans and Jasmine Aikey, and also incoming frosh Shae Harvey. The roster also includes Stanford commits Ella Emri, Gisele Thompson, and the electric Onyeka Gamero.
