Not really. The facts of the case were not fleshed out by then. Southgate must be happy with what he's been told about Toney's conduct since then.

I think some people here are wide off the mark. I agree Phillips did few this season which warrants an automatic call-up, but the fact is that there is no one else who can replace Rice if needed.
I like Skipp, but he only played 5 games or so, let's throw him straight into the deep end in two difficult games? The others are all left field: Harrison Reed? Dewsbury-Hall? None of them good enough to try them against Italy in Naples.
If these were friendlies, I'd say you're right, but this is no time for experimentation.

Henderson can do the Rice role surely

Especially given that Rice himself can’t do the Rice role currently
    :)

Maguire and the United defence are parting like the Red Sea against Real Betis

    Rashford has also started badly

I'm not too fussed about Philips selection, but Skipp has more Premier league, Domestic Cup and European minutes than Philips over the last 2 Seasons, (despite both being injured for significant period. TransferMarkt has Philips missing 30, Skipp 25 games through injury. I think people forget how much Skipp played last season under Espirito Santo and Conte before injury in January 2022.

Couldn't we have given this job to a black Englishman?

It might be true but he was on the bench until the injuries of Bentancur and Bissouma. He's playing well now, but a few good games shouldn't be enough to get in the England squad.
Phillips has the experience, was involved in two tournaments, I can understand that Southgate trusts him more than a 22 year old who hasn't done anything this season before February.
I say all of this, of course, assuming that Phillips is only being counted on as a backup. If he starts in Naples, than it's a different story.

Please, no. He's been horrible in that position.

Rashford is morphing into Sterling before our very eyes !!

Badly weighted passes and missing endless easy chances to score !

Then he scores a screamer :)

I'd hoped Southgate would learn from his mistakes but picking play that don't deserve to be in there over players who do hasn't changed. Maguire dier Henderson Philips Gallagher mount are either out of form or not playing. I understand that these are two tough fixtures but this was an opportunity to blood 2 or 3 new faces but it seems he would rather stick with the same ones. How tomori doesn't get in is beyond me. I would like to have seen midfield shaken up a bit with skipp or elliot brought in. I think in hindsight we should have removed Southgate after the world cup. I'm glad to see maddison still involved and toney recalled. I just feel nothing is really going to change under Southgate

That is pretty the team I'd pick but with a couple changes. I'd have Shaw left CB and Chilwell at LB and Maddison in for Henderson. Btw that front 3 should be lethal.

So what’s the big fuss of having a captain then ..

You really believe that Roy Keane didn’t effect matches or encourage his players ??

In the 1992-93 season Roy Keane played nearly every game for Nottingham Forest when they finished rock bottom of the Premier League with the second worst defensive record conceding 65 goals. United bought him that summer.

Not sure what the relevance here is? Roy Keane was captain of the best side in the Country with brilliant players around him, you can’t say the same for Rice at West Ham.
