The most interesting thing to me is that of the three traditional "star" numbers - 9, 10 and 11 - 9 has never really seen a great player adorn it in the true "number 9" fashion. KZ obviously wore it for a year when he gave up 15 to Roy Lassiter before moving to 5, and he's a great player, but he isn't a "number 9." 10 obviously had Mo, and 11 is God's country, but where is our star 9? Bunbury? Fabbro? Will Victorine finally be the guy? Why can't our number 9 be someone of star quality. 9 is just such a sweet number for strikers, it is just interesting to me that 9 has been a black-hole of numbers of sorts for Wizard strikers (obviously KZ is the exception, but a striker he isn't).

Anyone remember what number AJ Wood was issued in 2001?

7 was his # from 2000 with DC. He took 6 when DC reclaimed him 5/10.

    He was waived 3/26.

    Isn't on this 4/5/2001 roster.

First game was 4/7/2001. So considering how he wasn't on the roster at any point during the regular season, maybe he never got a #. Even if he did, I'd consider leaving him off the chart. Plenty of players probably not listed have been in preseason camps.

I get that someone might remember Wood playing preseason and know the #. I looked around the places on the web and the newspaper databases and found nothing. KC Star, Washington Post, Soccer America, mlsnet.

He was issued #7. I found it on mlsnet.com on archive.org.

    Incredible stuff Andy.

Number 8 is the kiss of death.

I posted above an archive.org mlsnet link showing #7, but Santel was on the same roster with #7. It's very possible all that meant was that when mlsnet moved his name from DC to KC's roster, they kept the same # that he had the previous year with DC. I doubt that preseason that both Santel and Wood were wearing #7.

Zusi must have magical powers because in the entire history of Wizards/Sporting, he seems to be the only one to wear number 8 and not be totally cursed. Brown, Walsh, and Auvray each had their moments, but Zusi has taken number 8 to a new level.

But not enough magic to be mentioned in the KC Star's "We Love Ya" book after helping us win the 2013 MLS Cup.

    * flip to the back pages that detail the 2013 roster. According to the KC Star, Zusi wasn't on the team.
