Was thinking about getting a season ticket. Mainly because of the free subscription to apples MLS package. I dont have faith well make playoffs. At least be entertaining and play the kids.
The subscription package is $99 - not sure what the cost of the season seats are but you have to add parking/transportation/concessions/etc and then think about it a bit more.
Not bad, but Federal Triangles SC did it better. It's the return of the Cherry Blossom Charity Jersey 🌸@DCSCORES is partnering with @ftsc_dc, Washington, D.C.’s LGBT+ Soccer Club 🏳️🌈A portion of the proceeds from every purchase will be donated to DC SCORES to support their important work. https://t.co/ZqhA2WwSv2 pic.twitter.com/8a5Y8Gosc6— Olive & York (@olive_york) January 6, 2023
I think the club nailed this pretty well. Someone said the branches could be darker, which I prolly agree with, but this is still straight fire. Do not get in line behind me on Thursday night or they might be out of your size by then, because wow, this might be one of our best shirts since I don't even remember. This could be a real worldy for DCU. For me, I can only think of 2-3 contenders since we went away from the 3 stripes across the chest.
Yeah, it definitely feels like they're a bit scared of the pink here to me... I think it either needed to pop more, or have the lighter blossom design on a black jersey instead of a white one. I fear that getting even on the opposite side of a room will be far enough for this to look like a basic white jersey with maybe a scribble on the side. Still cool, but it definitely reminds me of the miss from the Orlando Pride last year in being cool up close and completely unreadable at distance.
Looking at the small thumbnail, it of course looks muddled, but realistically its better than any of their sublimated designs which only show up when heavily photoshopped.
And it's got a much, much, much better sponsor on the front. I do like this most recent jersey, but I'll wait for them to find a better sponsor (or *gasp* charge me like $10 extra to order a version without one) before shelling out the cash.
I won’t ever buy another white Jersey, they’re ruined after one wash I’m my house. But DAYUM that’s a sweet shirt.
If they did that as one distinct color on top of the red, it's going to be excellent. If they did it via sublimation, the leaked image is probably highly photoshopped to enhance the contrast to make the design show up that well, just like our last 2 shirts.
What a head scratcher... "(2) the club mantra, “All are Welcome, All are United”" Have I been in the both-parents-dying-while-I-am-getting-divorced-too vortex so long that I forgot this mantra we never had? We never had this mantra before, right?
Sorry for your losses and the cyclone tearing through your life. AFAIK it's new, but not unwelcome in the current climate. I was there last night. I thought they did an awfully good job with the shirt, sure some things could have been different, but it's hard to argue that the event wasn't decent compared to past jersey unveils which are never coming back and the shirt isn't at least an A- or better. It feels good to feel like the club is actually trying in some areas. I know they've been trying in the player acquisition area, even if I think the theme of most of the acquisitions is misplaced in relation to where the club is. The players weren't really around the event to meet and greet, but for whatever reason Klich left me with a really good vibe. It might have been that moment when I felt like he shit housed the whole room referencing being better than last year. I hope he pans out, bc it's going to be a long painful season if he doesn't and my son put Klich's # on the back of his jersey. If Birnbaum tanks, I'll take the blame for it as I did with Flores. We were talking to a couple of people who work for the club and my son blurted out that they need to wear these new shirts at home which is brilliant. Esp if they do it while they are in bloom. If anyone has a particularly good source for customized sneakers I am on a vision quest for a pair of cherry blossom customized Superstars. Danita was sporting a pair and they raffled a pair. I suspect the other 2 pairs in existence will be auctioned for charity at some point this season. Apparently, Danita was really involved in the jersey design according to my contact at the club. Someone had told me that she'd flipped a bitch over that retro collection that bombed bc it was trash.
Isn't that a Screaming Eagles mantra? I am happy the club buys into it, but the FO did not have this mantra.
Agreed about the event. Wife and I arrived a bit late, but in time for the jersey reveal. I did like the Klichhousery about being better than last year. He knew exactly what he was doing. Bringing Jaime and Marco out was a nice touch as well. They are going to wear the blossom kits on March 25th at home. Probably going to be close to peak bloom for the blossoms. The FO has a long way to go, but at least someone is trying.
Data and mathematical modeling site FiveThirtyEight.com is obviously not impressed by DCU's off-season moves. They project them to finish last in the East and second-to-last overall (ahead of only expansion side St. Louis). Man, I hope they're wrong. Bottom-dwelling has gotten really old. https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/soccer-predictions/mls/
I've not been impressed with 538's modeling in politics so I'm going to take even less stock in their sports modeling. Especially in a sport that is so volatile. A goal or two changes games dramatically and we only play 34 matches. It isn't like MLB, NBA, or NHL where you play like 10,000 games. While Hockey is generally lower scoring, it too is very unpredictable. Mathematical analysis requires lots of data to crunch numbers so results like DC scoring two goals in stoppage time to come from behind to win are very hard to model.
I'm not even a Pollyanna and I think we will see a better team this year than last season. I rate Rooney as a bad manager as he spent his time last season planning for this season instead of trying to get results. He gave up on the team in favor of trying to buy his way to success this season. However, he did bring in players that should be better than what we had last year so I am hopeful we will be more competitive.
I don't think Rooney gave up on the team. Despite Kasper's claim this was a "playoff quality" roster, Rooney soon realized it was just junk. Seriously, what could he have done to make it better? As Matt Doyle has pointed out Rafael Romo was statistically the worst player ever in MLS. But his backup was Butterfingers Kempin. The same really applied all over the pitch. Were Sami Guediri or Tony Alfaro every really going to help you eke out a result? Nope. Rooney did play Hopkins, Fletcher (a bit), Akinmboni (a bit), TKdP and gave K. Smith a chance to show he belonged here. Smith is gone, Yow is gone (and still pulling splinters from his ass if and when he makes the bench in the 2nd Division in Belgium) and Nyeman is gone (and back as Open Cup fodder for RSL - another cheap team in MLS). The bottom line last year was that the roster was shit and fully deserving of the Wooden Spoon. Ferguson, Martinez, Bielsa, Low or whomever couldn't have made that mess any better. This is the season where Rooney's managerial chops will be tested and rated. The roster is "his" and he has no meaningful excuse for results other than his decisions.
IIRC, he had the worst record of any manager at DC and probably the league last season. But you can take from that what you will. He shipped out players he didn't rate and brought in a couple new signings so arguably a better squad than prior to his arrival... I agree that this season is the one that matters.
It's a better roster than last year for certain. I worry if it's good enough to make the playoffs and wonder where we will be in 2 ys. While Rooney seems to be willing to play the kids, that also involves a hit to our bottom line points total through their inexperience. The key points, striker and playmaker can't have a ton of tread left. I don't want to be having the 2022 conversation again in 2 years as we did in 2021, 2020, 2019, 2017, 2016, and so on. It's concerning that virtually no one has us in the playoffs. You can poke holes in 538s model all you want, they are there, but that is the prevailing opinion across the board whether you've got an analytical model or just giving the roster the eye test. Among all the MLS talking heads who predicted the east, Sasha Kljestan was the most optimistic for DCU with a 12th place prediction. That's a former captain of NJRB who I would just as soon as spit in his eye, but he's going to know the game better than any of us. It's also a panel that included Tom Bogart who had Ravel "not even in camp" starting along with a bunch of other nearly as absurd predictions for our lineup. Me, in all my pessimistic miseries, wasn't seeing us as a spoon contender like everyone else.
