You're saying they're going to blame his death on some gay immigrant out for revenge? George Santos, please pick up the white courtesy phone. You mean there are people who don't hope that?
I'm seeing that the Florida High School Athletic Association is backing down from requiring menstruation info, and are just requiring a note from a doctor verifying they are good to participate. I still think this presents a burden to kids who don't have healthcare...
Maybe, maybe not. Trump has 30% locked. But the polls say that the Reps are tired of Trump and his anger and pettiness and mockery and his behavior. Not what he believes, but how he behaves. So Ronde is being Trump, but not doing Trump. He's got all the hate as policy, but not shouting and belittling everybody. Either he is too scared to go head on v. Trump, or he is reading the polls and giving the voters a Trump alternative. Now, I think it is the prior as the latter would show some kind of political skill, which he doesn't have outside Florida. But it is a question I'll have until proven absolutely wrong.
How many times did Rs say they were annoyed with his behavior? They wouldn't dump him after January 6, they wouldn't dump him after the Mar-a-Lago raid. They haven't dumped him when several of his candidates have lost the midterms. You have Larry Hogan, the so called moderate saying he'll vote for Trump if he's the nominee. And DeSantis is a coward. Look at him around Biden, a man who isn't a bully but has true strength. That tweet I posted earlier says a lot. And as mentioned before, if Charlie Crist can make him freeze, a guy like Trump will have a field day with him. And just to add that cowardice, DeSantis could've easily stepped up when Trump's residence got raided, said it's time to move forward, but he hasn't. He'll only feel strong when he's bullying small schools (Noticed he hasn't picked fights with schools like UF or FSU), black people, or 12 year old gay kids. And DeSantis can act like Trump, but he does not have any charisma to pull it off. It's the Anne Margaret Theory from Mad Men.
A school system would be sued into roach manure ashes if something happened to a kid that could have been predicted with a physical or even a checkup. In most cases the school provides them thru a doc who comes and visits for that specific reason- not all families have the healthcare. A note from your family MD will also do. A waiver isn't the same thing. Nobody wants to see it happen. It would be totally irresponsible for an AA not to require some sort of clearance from a professional physician before allowing a student to participate in athletic competition. They already take on some risk with PE. Agreed that the FHSAA was in it for the politics. But they do the physical thing anyway, at least they do in Alabama and Georgia. You wanna play, you will get a note from somebody who's been to med school.
Is that not the case any more? It was when I was in high school - medical form required for sports participants. My kid doesn't do sports but he needed to get a medical form signed by a doctor for Scout camp. I don't think that's unusual. What is unusual / over the top is getting detailed menstrual history for girl athletes - that was the thing that prompted this particular outrage. A note from a doctor saying everything's cool, no problem; a form signed by a doctor with dates and durations of cycles, no thank you.
No, I was replying to the part of RSLfanboy's post about the healthcare part. The student doesn't have to worry about it. I guess it reads like I'm answering a strawman. Didn't mean that. Yeah, it kinda goes without saying that the FHSAA was waaay over the top. That's what I meant about them being in it for the politics... I guess it DOES have to be said these days after all... That bad, uninspiring candidate Hillary...
Huh. Must be different in Utah. I ran track and played soccer grades 9-12, and never once had to provide any sort of documentation, nor did the school offer an evaluation. Im also an Eagle Scout. Did a bunch of stuff, but only ever had to fill out those forms stating if I had existing illnesses/allergies.
Now that I recall, my HS did make me take a physical when I started 9th grade, because I was going to be on a sports team. Just the one physical for the 4 years, and very perfunctory.
Exactly. They're not screening your blood or stool or anything. They probably just check your HR, BP, record weight and height and you're good to go. It's usually a true doctor, tho. A lot of those sports med firms help out the school in their zone. They may get rings for their trouble if the team wins anything. Jim McGee got a World Series ring for his sports psychology work with the '83 Orioles.
IIRC, everyone in Illinois when I was growing up had to take a physical from a doctor for 1st, 5th, and 9th grade, and there was an annual physical if you played a sport. Quite perfunctory. Cost something like $10. A free tetanus shot was offered if you were due. The same physical would cover more than one sport, so when wrestling season rolled around I was already covered by football. Perfunctory, and generally non-invasive. And I'm pretty sure the girls weren't required by the state to document their periods.
I said non-invasive, but now that I recall... there was also the "turn-your-head-and-cough" testicle-check for hernias, etc.
Middle school and high school required a physical every year but once you did them you were covered until next school year. Nothing invasive at all, either.
Yep.....The party of "small government:" “Florida lawmakers are expected to vote Thursday on a proposal to give Gov. Ron DeSantis new power over the state’s most iconic theme parks amid his ongoing feud with Disney,” CNN reports. “Under a fast-tracked bill that could be headed to the Republican governor’s desk by the end of the week, the state would take over the Reedy Creek Improvement District, the 55-year-old government body that has effectively given Disney control over the land around its Orlando-area theme parks. The district’s existing board, made up of individuals with close ties to Disney, would be replaced by a five-member board hand-picked by DeSantis.”
I learned a long time ago that Republicans are about avoiding taxes, not small government. Very different things.
Miller is on a roll These faux tough guys decided that literally anyone in America can be smeared as a groomer: teachers, drag performers, children’s hospital employees, anyone. And that’s fair game. But the moment Trump suggests DeSantis might have done something untoward, they flop on the ground like French soccer players begging for a red card. It’s hypocritical, it’s cruel, it’s pathetic. But most importantly: It’s ********ing weak. If anyone should be forced to weather some groomer accusations, it’s the guy whose office mainstreamed the schtick. So either clean up the act, or buck up Ronbois. What goes around, comes around. https://thetriad.thebulwark.com/p/the-desantis-soft-bois-can-dish-it
I have to drag in the Film Monitor, @Belgian guy, he has a thought on every movie he has every seen from the filmography to the actors to the production. BG, did this decision make the movie better or worse.
Voters or politicians? Politicians, none that I know of. But when I was mentioning the 30%, I was talking about voters. As for the...disinterest?...of the non fanatics, I haven't seen any polls, yet it has been mentioned everywhere I've been listening (NPR, Bulwark, Post Reports, etc.) I'm not disagreeing with you on with regard to the politicians, particularly those in office. Those in office do need to reach out to the base, but they already have name recognition. Perfect example is the difference between Johnson and Oz. Johnson would have won easily with a challenger. But Oz only got 30%. Had he only had 1 opponent, I'm fairly confident he would not have been running v. Fetterman. There are numerous examples of this past mid-term where politicians who leaned into to Trumpism and didn't already have the name recognition didn't fair so well. Because voters had a choice. They are all cowards, bottom line. But I do agree with you, and have stated so several times (directly and to others). But where I seem to differ from you is that, while I do believe DeSantis will fail, I want the evidence that will/is happen. And I also believe that if the Republicans have a solid choice between Trump and somebody else, I think it will be somebody else. Never watched Mad Men.
