If it were brought up as a retort to that, then I’d have agreed! I don’t think the Higuain miss was nearly as bad as people say—it was a volley just on the edge of the box. I suspect the xG on that one was low too (and actually I’ve even specifically mentioned that when saying the Messi chance wasn’t that good of one). The way Messi’s miss has been brought up in this thread was not in relation to someone else saying Higuain’s miss cost Messi the World Cup, but rather just people saying Messi missed an easy chance that he should have scored. My response to that was that I didn’t think it was a particularly great chance and thought the xG likely wasn’t very high on it. And that article validates that—showing that the xG on that chance was below 10%.

Yeah I think it’s very unclear. I think the most likely explanations for what “runs” are is either: (1) dribbling by someone who does not attempt to tackle you; or (2) runs that progress the ball at least a certain distance. As you say, I don’t think we’ll ever know though. We do know “dribbles and runs” is a super different stat from today’s definition of “dribbles” though.

Now the run or progressive run is that a player carrying the ball forward at least 10 metres without losing the ball. Don't know what the definition was in like 2001 though.

I have no hate for Messi, but his fanboys are tieing. He is not a classic playmaker and that has been easily demonstrated. There is ample material in the thread looking at his positioning and role and they are not that of the main playmakerof the tram nor analogous to guys like Zidane (hence the comparisons)

Normal player is most unfair. But I agree that that Messi lacks a certain degree of creativity in his general play as well as in his range of types of goals.

Clown tricks won't make you more creative. Watch Antony of Man utd then tell me if this guy is a clown or a creative footballer.

Johan Cruyff: "Playing football is very simple, but playing simple football is the hardest thing there is". Messi is the ideal of this.

You prefer clown tricks then that's your taste.

And what's problem with Messi not a classic playmaker??? A modern playmaker is playmaker, a classic playmaker is playmaker. If you don't count modern playmaker then that's your issue.

HEY GUYS IM DO NOT WANT TO CREATE CONFUSION OK.
BUT THESE ARGUMENTS OF THIS YOUNG GENERATION(THE BIGGEST PART HERE) IS HILARIOUS MAN AND DOESNT MAKE ANY SENSE
A LOT OF NUMBERS AND STATISTICS ITS VERY SAD EUROPEAN METHOD TO TELL FOR EXAMPLE MAURO SILVA IS BETTER THAN FALCAO AND CLODOALDO
    HEY.....PLZ TURN THE PAGE
ALL THESE NUMBERS DO NOT CHANGE MY MIND
IN THE LAST WC MBAPPE WAS SUPERIOR THAN MESSI IN ALL THE KEY MOMENTS
BUT THE MIDIA WANTED TO GIVE A WC CUP TO MESSI
    AND THEY DONE IT
MESSI PERFORMANCE IN THE LAST WC IS NOT SIMILARY AS MARADONA 1985(MILES AHEAD IN THE CONDITIONS MARADONA HAS IN THAT MOMENT) .

    Boomers are hilarious.

I remember my uncle (who is born in 1953) giving similar arguments back in the early-mid 90s against Maradona when he was about to retire and people were assessing his career.

"He's a regular player, he's not great! It's just marketing and media hype. Bochini, Zico, Cruyff, Rivelino, Garrincha were all way better. Pele was a hundred... no, no a thousand times better! These people don't know anything about football!"

And YouTube is a wonderful resource because now we can judge for ourselves how great these players were. Before, we had to rely on old people's memories and stories about these players, and the odd newspaper or magazine report. Now we can use those, PLUS actual footage.

By the way, I was born in 1981 so I got to see Romario, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Zidane, and Cristiano Ronaldo in their primes. Messi is so far ahead of all of them it's crazy.

We all saw these players, you are not the exception here. There is no honest assessment which can lead to the conclusion that Messi is "so far ahead" of Cristiano who was his contemporary and we can compare more easily, so I encourage you to revisit your opinion with a more moderate temperament .
