Would love to go back to this name but they still exist as an indoor team and guessing it would be pretty expensive and not sure it's worth it. This is actually been my vote for years. Since it has connections in English and Spanish so could even have a Bilingual crest. As for the stadium SDSU has been pretty open that they want an MLS team and that they are willing to sell some equity in the stadium in order to make it work. Snapdragon stadium is part of a wider expansion of the University which is going to require money so they're happy to take on partners. I watched the Don's comments about expansion around the Final and in both his annual press conference, and his comments at halftime he specifically mentioned Snapdragon stadium in a positive light which tells me he is okay with what what is being proposed. San Diego expansion talk over the last 30 years has felt like Lucy with the football. But this year feels different. We've always had the fans but never had the stadium or the owner. Finally have the stadium and if the rumors are true (and they seem pretty serious around here) we finally have the three pillars of a successful expansion franchise. And oh yeh my Loyal Season tickets now have an updated terms of conditions referencing any change of ownership hummmm...
Do any of the Aztecs other sports play there? Obviously built for football, but women's and men's soccer?
The soccer teams play at the SDSU SportsDeck. https://goaztecs.com/sports/2018/7/13/facilities-sports-deck-html.aspx The San Diego Legion rugby team played there last season.
Looks like they are also hosting other events... Monster trucks, concerts etc.. https://www.snapdragonstadium.com/events
FWIW, largest US CSA/MSA's without an MLS Team: 1. Detroit/Warren/Ann Arbor MI. 5,424,742. If you throw in Windsor, Canada (422,630) you are at 5,847,372. 2. Phoenix/Mesa AZ. 4,999,734. 3. Cleveland/Akron/Canton. 3,615,968. 4. San Diego/Chula Vista/Carlsbad. 3,286,069 This is an MSA. If you count TJ across the border at 2,157,853 you are looking at 5,443,922 in a would-be SD/TJ CSA. 5. Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg. 3,219,514. MSA. Everything else is under 3 mil or is part of a larger CSA that has a team. There are a lot of nice candidates and faster growing markets in the 2-3 mil range: Vegas, Indy, Sacramento, San Antonio, Raleigh. But getting one of the bigger dogs makes a lot of sense. And I wouod not be opposed to a 2nd team in some CSAs (SF/Oak, Baltimore), smaller cities (Louisville, OKC, Tulsa, El Paso, etc), or even in a less-hip older city (Pittsburgh). We will see if World Cup fever can spark a new round of expansion to get us to 32, or past it. I do not think for a minute Garber wants to stop at 30. Or 32.
Non MLS Metros by 2020 GDP (billions $) 1. Phoenix - 240 2. Detroit - 220 3. San Diego - 207 4. Baltimore - 176 - too close to DC 5. Inland Empire - 160 - west coast folks, will this market ever have its own pro sports? 6. Tampa St Pete - 145 7. Pittsburgh - 136 8. Indianapolis - 125 9. Sacramento - 122 10. San Antonio - 116- too close to Austin 11. Cleveland - 114 12. Las Vegas - 100
Good info. Though I prefer CSA & MSA to the metro area. Though the GDP is good info. You are gonna be pulling fans, tickets, and folks buying merch, and watching on TV from more than just the metro area. Is SF/OAK not on that list? I do not count the Baltimore/San Antonio proximity as a negative. Quite the opposite. Built in Derby like Hell Is Real, Cascadia, and NY/LA.
Included it with San Jose subconsciously, lol With regards to markets close to one another, I'm assuming the billionaire owners will care more about their monopoly on the product.
If they want to go another direction, that’s another story but I seriously doubt the San Diego Sockers name and logo would cost that much. I mean how much does an entire indoor soccer team cost when comparing it to an MLS expansion fee? I doubt it costs more than $100k and if an MLS expansion fee costs $350 million , that’s peanuts.
IDK, San Antonio would be huge for South TX IMO. I don't think any serious soccer fans in San Antonio are buying merchandise or even really rooting for the Dynamo as long as San Antonio FC exists, so I don't think Houston's billionaire owner would stop their entry into MLS. If anything, it could mean more ticket sales having a third in-state rival. Especially one close enough to have lots of SA fans. I don't know how fans of Austin FC feel though.
I just can't see San Antonio getting a spot when it is only 80 miles from Austin. Why create a new market at the expense of an existing market?
Each time I see San Antonio mentioned, I keep remembering how the city’s mayor kept saying he had no interest in a soccer team or stadium. That was back around 2005-06 though so things could be different now as MLS has grown immensely ever since.
I keep reading about SF -Oakland but there really is nowhere to build it other than tearing down the Oakland Coliseum. I doubt they will build one in the City of San Francisco and I doubt they can afford land along the peninsula. Maybe where the old Candlestick Park stadium was but that is a terrible location which is why the Giants and 49ers both moved.
The Socker's are building a new arena in North County. Don't know how much it will cost but has to be in the 10's of millions of dollars so guessing the right's to their name will be a lot more than 100,000 dollars. Rumor around town is the Loyal are involved so might stick with that name, which at first wasn't my fav but it has grown on me.
Wow, they will own their own arena! For as long as I've followed the game across North America in the last 50 years, this will be the first time that I recall an an Indoor team building and owning their own arena. If this is true, good for them! In my opinion though, I still think something could be worked out as a team in San Diego should be named the Sockers as opposed to the 'Loyal'.
First I agree I grew up going to Sockers games in the 80's so I have the nostalgia for it. But I've been waiting almost 30 years so will take anything. The arena is called Frontwave arena. https://www.sdsockers.com/oceanside not sure how much they are putting in themselves but they'll be the main tenet so pretty clear it would take more than a few 100 grand to get their name off them.
It's just the Sockers name and logo is synonymous with the city when it comes to game that it’s hard to imagine a different one or a name like Loyal. That is the same reason on why the Earthquakes, Whitecaps, Sounders and Timbers were renamed after the old NASL clubs.
All true, but if they don't want to part with the name, there's not much you can do. They own it. You can't force them to sell or force them to sell at a reasonable price.
