Wanted to get the conversation started, specifically about the run-up to our first group stage match vs. Barbados. In a group with them, Canada, and Trinidad & Tobago. Just over a month until kickoff.
Does anyone know anything about the Canadian squad? Not to undersell the Caribbean teams, but they generally struggle at this level even when their senior team (T&T) is good.
I’d assume it’ll just be a collection of their MLS academy kids like usual, maybe a couple dual nats in America
H/t to @Winoman for spotting that the matches will be on FOX & Tubi and Univision & VIX, in the U.S. https://www.concacaf.com/en/under-17s-men/watch/
The USSF is not being intentionally slow/late in releasing the U17 qualifying roster after other CONCACAF nations. It is likely related to one or both of these:-Keyrol Figueroa healthy in time or not-Christian McFarlane pondering between the U17s or holding out for England— ChuckMe92 Soccer (@ChuckMe92Soccer) February 1, 2023

Interesting. I wonder if one of the 3 alternates has to take this player's place, or if they can call up another player?

So... Mexico dominates this event. It's the only event across both men's and women's that the US does not currently hold, and that's because after dominating the first half in 2019, we gave up the game to Mexico. The US has only won 3 times, and hasn't won since 2011. A team anchored by Paul Arriola, Marc Pelosi, Dillon Serna, Jack McBean and Kellyn Acosta. The group stage is somewhat silly as it's four teams and three go through, but it does get most teams at least four games, and if you are going to fly to Guatemala, that's nice. If we win Group F, we'd get the Dominican Republic in the first knockout round, and Mexico and Honduras would be on the other side of the bracket if they won their groups. Costa Rica would be on our side of the bracket and would be a possible semifinal matchup. Weirdly, the Group F runner-up, if we were to be there, ends up on the same side of the bracket -- we'd need to finish 3rd to go to the other side -- but would get an earlier match-up with Costa Rica. The semi could conceivably be a rematch with Canada, then. It's the same with Group E and Group H (Mexico and Honduras, respectively) -- they would need to finish 3rd in their groups to be on our side of the bracket. But both of them have much harder groups than us ... if we go off the senior team level. We have Canada, T&T and Barbados. Canada may be the hardest #2 team, but Barbados means moving to the knockouts is assured. Mexico has Panama, Guatemala and Curacao. They should win it, of course, but solid. Honduras has Haiti, El Salvador and Suriname. Easier, but no Barbados. Costa Rica has Jamaica, Cuba and Guadeloupe, so more like our group. If we win our group and beat the DR, we'd likely get Jamaica or Guatemala, so the path really could be ... --> DR --> Jamaica --> Costa Rica / Canada --> Mexico / Honduras
Well damn, this sucks. 📰 : @SanDiegoLoyal Goalkeeper Duran Ferree replaces Diego Kochen on the #U17MYNT @Concacaf U17 Championship Roster due to injury— U.S. Soccer YNT (@USYNT) February 6, 2023
So Ferree will taken Kochen's place on the 20-man roster, and Eyestone will take Ferree's place on the alternates list. DEFENDERS (6):Christian Diaz (LAFC; San Bernardino, Calif.), Tyler Hall (Inter Miami CF; Miramar, Fla.), Aidan Harangi (Eintracht Frankfurt/GER; Zwingenberg, Germany), Stuart Hawkins (Seattle Sounders FC; Fox Island, Wash.), Sawyer Jura (Portland Timbers; Bend, Ore.), Oscar Verhoeven (San Jose Earthquakes; Pleasant Hill, Calif.) MIDFIELDERS (7):Christopher Aquino (Seattle Sounders FC; Pasco, Wash.), Adrian Gill (FC Barcelona/ESP; Denver, Colo.), Taha Habroune (Columbus Crew; Columbus, Ohio), Cruz Medina (San Jose Earthquakes; San Francisco, Calif.), Edwyn Mendoza (San Jose Earthquakes; San Francisco, Calif.), Paulo Rudisill (LA Galaxy; Irvine, Calif.), Pedro Soma (UE Cornella/ESP; Coconut Creek, Fla.) Too early to be sure about any of them but yet another position group that looks promising for next U20 cycle.Emi Ochoa and Diego Kochen will battle it out for the #1 shirt and inevitably others will emerge.— ChuckMe92 Soccer (@ChuckMe92Soccer) February 6, 2023
