I know you're talking about teams (us) rebranding, but I really expected the league to rebrand with the new TV deal. Something similar to the way the EPL launched in 1992 in conjunction with a large media rights package.
#Crew96 will play USL Championship’s Pittsburgh Riverhounds here in Columbus on Feb. 4 https://t.co/k7uiKxSBSR— Bailey Johnson (@BaileyAJohnson_) January 23, 2023
I asked chatgpt to give me a chant about Cucho playing for the Columbus Crew. Verse 1: From South America, he came to the US, With his skills and speed, he's a must. Columbus Crew, his new home, With Cucho in the field, we'll never be alone. Chorus: Cucho, Cucho, he's got the drive, With his foot on the ball, he's always alive. Columbus Crew, we'll follow your lead, With Cucho on the field, victory is guaranteed! Verse 2: The defense can try, but they'll never slow, With every step, Cucho will grow. Scoring goals, he's got the grace, Columbus Crew, we'll win this race. Chorus: Cucho, Cucho, he's got the drive, With his foot on the ball, he's always alive. Columbus Crew, we'll follow your lead, With Cucho on the field, victory is guaranteed! Outro: So let's raise our voices, and let the world know, Columbus Crew, we've got the flow. With Cucho on the field, we'll always strive, Columbus Crew, we're here to stay alive!
I've been suggesting the return of "Score Us a Goal ________" to the tune of Piano Man for years now. No one ever listens. Although right now I don't think we have a real goal scorer whose name would neatly fit in that space, so I guess I'll keep waiting.
It is here to stay. And many teams use a similar heyyyyyy chant in MLS and EPL. Hey ho cucho is the alternate chant.
Twitter, I think this board a few times, maybe Reddit. I haven't made it my life's work or anything; just occasional mentions. I'm also fully aware that most of the people who are in the Nordecke these days would probably feel the need to ask me "which Piano Man? Elton John?"
This would be good, if the syncopation of the name fits the song. It’d have to be a 5-syllabe name with the accents in the right place. On a not completely unrelated note, I never understood why, when Pipa took corners, we’d chant “Hi-gua-in!” instead of “Fe—de-ri-co Hi-gua-in!” (I—believe that we will win!). Seemed like a missed opportunity.
That could be fudged a little bit too. I always thought Gyasi Zardes would’ve fit in there pretty well. “Score us a goal, Jah-see-Zar-ar-des, Score us a goal, tonight…” But he had a song already.
I think ‘you are my Cucho, my only Cucho’ would be freaking hilariously great. I am laughing as I type that.
Bump. The 2023 season officially starts today with a preseason clash against our similarly-hued USL neighbors from Pittsburgh. Um….that’s about it, I guess.
I am going to be in the area at that time. I talked the wife into swinging by the stadium to see if we can get in.
Getting in the stadium might not be so hard. Getting inside the seasonal bubble might prove more of a challenge.
Need a key card to get in the gate. I did see Bez pulling in and thought about asking if he could make it happen, but I decided against it.
Not that it matters, but are there any hints as to the score today? They played four 30 minute quarters in a 120 minute “game.”
So we played Inter Miami today. Crickets from the Club about it. This whole pre season has been unusually quiet. I get that Nancy wants to keep his formation secret. Seems like Miami might know what it is now. Very few pics coming from training camp. Are there trialists that can’t be seen in public? The no game reports coupled with a bare bones roster just seems like a bad way to get your fan base excited for the season.
Is it really, though? Does the average joe soccer fan give a rat's ass about MLS preseason matches? I mean, I'm as big of a fan of this team as most, and I certainly don't care.
No one is saying the results (whatever they are) matter. Some of us just don’t get the silence around them. Preseason matches in the past didn’t matter, either, but I used to enjoy heading out to Endeavor to watch them, or watching them at home. It did, at least for me, help ramp up excitement about the regular season. Other clubs are posting results, sharing match reports. My guess is that it’s just due to the coaching situation. If so, fine. I hope it’s not what happens in future year, however.
I agree. I usually like preseason for getting hyped for the upcoming season (even if the results are not indicative whatsoever of how the season will unfold). Are the secrets theyre protecting so crucial that its worth leaving fans in the dark while we can see every other team and what theyre up to? I dont know. If its what the coach wants then fine, but like you said, I hope its not the trend in the future. Even if they didnt want people (other teams) to see everything theyre working on.....would it hurt for us to be able to know who played (even if we cant see a formal lineup formation) and who scored and assisted with maybe just some short and quick highlight videos or something? Im feening over here for CREW!!!!!!
I think a lot of us would be watching every second of any streamable matches, training session videos, and player interviews that were made available. We have every other preseason. I somewhat understand the radio silence from the club. I would just prefer to see what's going on and get a feel for the players and team leading up to the first game of the season.
From Matt Doyle: Columbus Crew Can they dominate the ball and thus dominate tempo the way Wilfried Nancy’s CF Montréal team did? That Montréal side was one of the best-coached, best-structured teams in recent league history. They just never let themselves get unbalanced and were almost always decisive with the ball – a necessity in such a possession-heavy scheme. I think the Crew have a lot of the necessary pieces to make this approach work in Ohio, but it probably won’t happen overnight. Nancy’s first year in Montréal was 2021, remember, and it took that group about 20 games to really learn all the dance steps.
