I wonder. If there was another Katrina right now how much taxpayer money would go to Ukraine and how much would be spent helping poor people in the United States with disaster relief. Merry ********ing Christmas. If Jesus was here he’d be disgusted and leave again

There’s so much profit in war aid to Ukraine wouldn’t slow down…

So, we are embarking on Round 9 of the Republican Speaker of the House battle.

Kevin McCarthy has lost every round to Hakeem Jeffries and a bunch of lunatics in the Republican Party.

Will Rogers would be scratching his head that the Democrats are the organized political party and saying something scathingly funny about the Republicans, with a sly grin on his face.

Even worse that Libertarians, traitorous shit for brains.

Sadly, some like Boebert-with her GED she "earned" a couple of months before being elected to Congress, Santos-with his completely fabricated resume and pending criminal charges in Brazil, etc., really are shit for brains.

Quick question, HB 5855 that just passed the Illinois house, this has no effect for Chicago right?

Meaning, Chicago already outlaws any rifle that would be affected by that law, is not like they are banning anything more than what the city of Chicago already does.

I don't live in this ward but as a single-issue voter (pro-Chicago Fire) I think I'm going to have to door knock for this guy:

Anyone watch the ABC7 Mayoral Debate? It was on C-Span. I have watched the first half and might watch the other later.

What a collection of lousy candidates. 2019 had some decent candidates. Not here.

Not a single one has a decent proposal.

Willie Wilson? What an f'n Moran. Throw more police at every problem. And xenophobia on display. "Cut taxes."
Oh, and run the City "like a business," which has never worked at any level.

Paul Vallas? Yuck. He needs to go away. I can't stand him, but his comments about private security on the CTA were interesting.

Lightfoot? No, no. So incredibly disappointed in her.

Rep. Kam Buckner had a few good ideas. However, he said that the CTA is unreliable and unsafe. Not sure about that.

Com. Brandon Johnson seemed pretty decent. He would likely be my choice, based solely on this debate.

Ald. Sophia King seemed like the most serious candidate.

I have no use for Chuy Garcia. I had no use when he was my representative and no use for me.

Ja'Mal Green is 27. Looking at his bio, it appears he has never actually had a job. He did mention there should be a community bank. Absolutely.

Roderick Sawyer really did not have much to say. He did have a good comment about property tax and working on the issues for the unhoused.

    Anyone watch it?

I didn’t. Since it sounds like it can be viewed on demand, if you have a link for this lazy one, I'd appreciate it.

Not King. I won't say more, but I know her better than the others and that's all I will say about her.

I am most intrigued by Buckner, Sawyer, and Johnson in that order. But I really fear that too many of us will ideologically crash upon the rocks of our idealism and none of the most liberal candidates will make it to the runoff, the vote splitting too many ways.

    Interesting comment about King. Thx.

Never heard of her before tonight, but she was the most coherent. I'd like to know your comments.

Are you not intrigued by Willie Wilson?!?

This is not Chicago Politics, but it is insane:

An absolutely bonkers bill has been introduced in West Virginia. HBB 2885 "Life at Conception Act of 2023."

Yes, it is about every fertilized egg is sacred, but it is way worse than "just" that anti-science nonsense. I could go on endlessly about its awfulness, but better if I just quote the bill and let you all draw your own conclusions. I start with the definitions and additional provisions prior to the body of the bill, as they are, well, something.

From the definitions (bold and italics are mine):
"(a) HUMAN PERSON; HUMAN BEING — The terms "human," "human person" and "human being" include each member of that certain distinct, separate, and preeminent set of divinely created beings commonly and collectively known and referred to as humans or humanity, consisting of two sexes, male and female, which are mutually dependent for procreation; which are also that same set of divinely created beings descended from the first humans, Adam and Eve, as indicated in the historical record and genealogy provided in the Biblical Book of Genesis; which are also that same set of ambitious, creative, intellectual, and ingenuitive beings by which the great civilizations of the world have been founded and populated, the nature of which the structures, monuments, and various artifacts of humankind bear witness; and the acts of which are also recorded in the annals of human history"

    §16-2S-4. Additional provisions.

    (c) The terms "male" and "female," with regard to the context of procreation, recognizes the general rule in nature regarding sexual reproduction. Nothing in this section shall be construed as to deny the full humanity, personhood, or full rights of individuals who are physically incapable of reproduction, choose abstinence, or use traditional pre-fertilization contraception methods.

    The "actual" law:
    §16-2S-2. Right to Life.

    (a) In general — To implement equal protection for the right to life of each born and preborn human person, and pursuant to the duty and authority of the legislative body, including the power under section 8 of Article I of the Constitution of the United States and Article VI of the Constitution of the State of West Virginia to make necessary and proper laws and the power under section five of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, we hereby declare that the right to life guaranteed by the Constitutions of the United States and the State of West Virginia is vested in each human being.

    (b) Nothing in this article shall be construed to require the prosecution of any woman for the unintentional death of her unborn child or to prohibit in vitro fertilization as a means of fertility treatment.

Frankly, after watching the rest of the debate (skipping the "closing statements" as I had dinner reservations), none of them really stood out for me.

    Top Three Performers:

    Rep. Kam Buckner
    Com. Brandon Johnson
    Ald. Sophia King
All three mentioned that they had actual proposals for dealing with specific issues.

I took a look at Buckner's proposals and, while incredibly short on detail, he does seem to actually have the beginnings of a plan.
I also just looked at King's proposal for "Safety and Justice" and it is new head of CPD, more officers and better "alternative" response to 911 calls (not sending the police to a mental health crisis, I think).
I looked at Johnson's website and there were no specific plans, just a few paragraphs of talking points on some of the hot button issues. which was disappointing.

    As for the rest:
    Vallas was intellectually bankrupt.
Willie Wilson was "throw the police" at just about every problem.
Lightfoot barely has anything to say and nothing consequential. She did seem to view Vallas as her biggest threat as she directed a few comments towards him (which in a less civilized debate might be "attacks").
Garcia did discuss a few bills he has sponsored in Congress, but not much else.
Sawyer said almost nothing and nothing memorable.
Green had really nothing to add, other than a community bank (which is an excellent idea).

I love that little part of Genesis!
"The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and so also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown." Genesis 6:4.
I think it's the Bible's way of explaining and accepting the stories of Gilgamesh, Hercules/Heracles, Perseus, Achilles, etc.
