Repped -- though (sorry I can't cite source) I read that too many of the ESPN (or whoever was airing it) playback videos were still black and white. That was, apparently, the reason. A little mystified how the US media can be so antiquated but European leagues don't seem to run up against this problem. Maybe the AppleTV deal will finally get past this.
That's odd. From what I remember hearing, the TV trucks were updated to color in time for MLS Cup 98, hence (part of the reason?) why Chicago was in red and KC wore blue. The TV cameras have been HD for some time now. Indeed, ESPN even went 3D for a few years back when that was a thing. I find it hard to believe that some monitors somewhere are still apparently black and white. Indeed, many MLS games through the years have been "color vs color." I'm sure part of the reason why England has been "color vs color" for so long, possibly even back in the days of black-and-white home TVs is that each team has different patterns. Think of Arsenal and you get red jerseys with white sleeves. Think of Newcastle and you think of stripes.
Actually… 1) MLS Cup ‘98 was played between the Chicago Fire (in their home red) and D.C. United (in their away white). 2) MLS Cup 2003 was the first MLS Cup final which allowed both teams to wear their home uniforms, with the San Jose Earthquakes wearing blue and the Chicago Fire wearing red. -G
MLS process is this: Clubs Primary kit is always first choice for all games, but the Clubs themselves tell the league and refs what they want to wear for each game at the start of the season. So if they want to wear their new away all year they can list that. Refs review and if not a color clash then they approve or tell a team to change.- Hence the 1 light and 1 dark rule as MLS does not do thirds across the board. The only reason a lot of MLS teams have had white kits is because that is what the Clubs tell adidas they want. There is a whole section in the jersey brief that the league sends to Clubs asking them not to pick just white but to use other light colors. Its up to the Club though and most think white away kits are what American sports do. I believe the article in the Athletic on DC's kit process is still there if you want to read in more detail.
Doesn't Atlanta have a third? It was very recently when thirds were allowed if teams sold a certain number of jerseys. Or so I heard.
Yes, ATL does but not all teams do and that’s part of the problem. There is a selling requirement per Club to be able to qualify to get a third. When MLS had thirds a fans would only buy the third and not home or away so they took the thirds away.
As the person who made that mockup, just wanna point out that it’s a prediction. Can’t tell you an estimated accuracy, but I do think it’s on the right track. Certainly not an outright leak as Footy Headlines sort of makes it out to be, lol.
That’s too bad, as I was hoping that this was concrete evidence that the new primary jersey would remain predominantly blue rather than returning to predominantly black. I posted my thoughts about your predicted new primary uniform here. -G
I don't like the thin red stripes or the texture that I see in those TFC photos. Take those away and it might be a winner, but maybe not. Would love to see a mockup of those changes (I've never done a mockup, but I like others'). ' ' Also, I feel like there is too much parity between the size of the crest and the size of the BMO logo.
From Reddit, Seattle jersey with the new sponsor... / Yes, that is the same sponsor as Portland's stadium.
How do I take a 2.5-year break from MLS and Montreal (and Chicago) rebrand twice?! People didn't like the snowflake logo? Having seen it now, I dig it.

Good God! Between this and Toronto, is MLS going with the jersey version of ugly Christmas sweaters? Red Bull—here’s an idea. A jersey with half blue, half silver vertical panels a la Blackburn Rovers. It would look like a Red Bull can. Boom! Done. Iconic jersey.
