If Cade gets another start, I think he'll have a much tougher time against Colombia. Those Serbian defenders were a bit slow and wooden. It will be a good challenge for him.

Looks like recognition the Nats failed at the most recent World Cup. Advancing from group stage not good enough any longer.

I'm not vehemently opposed to changes or anything like that - there are plenty of other qualified folks, but at the same time, the perfect is the enemy of the good. The program made great strides since missing WC in 2018, for the most part completely changing out the team and stocking it with a load of promising young players. The US went into WC with one of the youngest teams, and arguably outplayed FIFA #5 England before losing to FIFA #6 Netherlands in the knockout round.

When you make a change, it can be for the better or for the worse, and the US just cannot afford "the worse" with 2026 being here. So it's a roll of the dice. Fortunately, with the stockpile of good young players it would be difficult for the next crew to screw up too badly. And they have the previous regime to thank for that.

We needed a clean sweep - the current management was too invested in the status quo, leading to embarrassing situations like ‘soccer parentgate’.

What is "soccer parentgate" - the little dustup over Gio?

That ‘little dustuo’ spawned an investigation that is ongoing and will likely ensure GGG member takes the field in charge of the USMNT again. Not sure if your sense of proportion is properly adjusted. You may want to change the oil to 5W for the winter…

Well, by "parentgate" you mean one thing - the Gio thing, and not some kind of epidemic of parents trying to insert themselves into the nats program? OK. The thing is there will always be politics. Remember the whole thing with Klinsie and Landon, and Klinsie's kid said something about Landon not being on the team and all that?

So you can say that you want a "clean slate" but there will always be something. If they are domestic guys, there's no way they don't already have many interconnections in US soccer (i.e. "status quo"), and I'm not sure that's a bad thing. Or we can go with an intl guy, but I think that can be worse, based on the Klinsie era, because these guys may not understand American players and the way Americans think and play and get motivated.

The irony is that what Berhalter into this mess was his not caving to favorites. He didn't give any special favoritism to Gio, and that resulted in Gio acting out a bit, and they talked it thru and it was OK. Then Berhalter made the mistake of talking about the incident in generic terms and people ran with it - oh you mean Gio!

To me the best we can do is to hire someone who is familiar with / understands US soccer but is a strong leader and won't play favorites. I think Greg was fine, though I do have questions about what led to his hiring. But there are other qualified folks as well. But I think the program has made great strides since 2018, so I'm not sure "status quo" is a bad thing at this point.

There have been a few blips in the past but I think this is the best the team has ever been in terms of the potential - all the good young players in the program. We are poised to have a very good 2026 if we don't screw it up, but unfortunately you don't play the games on paper, and it often comes down to getting the bounces at the crucial moments.

This family feud thing is more complicated then most people know. Claudio Reyna was the director of Austin FC and got Sebastian Berhalter on loan from Columbus Crew (yeah, Gregg has a son too). It looks like Austin didn’t play Sebastian much and then declined his option at the end of the season. You think Gregg might have been unhappy about that?

There are always going to be family and personal connections. You've gotta trust that the people are professional enough to make the decisions about soccer and not about personal gripes. I don't believe that Berhalter was not giving Gio a bigger role out of some kind of retribution. That would be dumb. There's too much at stake. There's a lot of competition for those spots, Gio missed a lot of time and is a great player, but also doesn't put in as much effort defensively as some of the other guys. His time will come.

I don’t trust Berhalter, and I believe he could be dumb enough to allow personal shit to cloud his judgment. He’s human.

I believe than any coach is going to be human and could therefore allow personal shit to cloud his judgment. Perhaps we should hire an "AI" coach :).

Perhaps the hiree’s brother shouldn’t be involved in the hiring.

That I agree with. Not sure his brother was "involved in the hiring", but it was not a good look that he had a high-level position at US Soccer when G was hired. But once again, we're not going to be able to purge every single personal connection out of US Soccer, so we have to at some point trust that people act professionally.

If he thought Gio would be an important piece to the US winning he would have started him or played him more. That would be so much more important to him than his son's experience at Austin. I am sure he is acutely aware of his son's ability (or lack of) and would not let that affect the US chances of doing well at the World Cup.
