If I was running an MLS club, every season I'd go to San Jose Earthquakes and ask them which of their young academy players they aren't going to sign I can trade for my draft picks. You'll acquire more valuable players using that way than trying to participate in the MLS draft.— USMNTProspects (@ProspectsUsmnt) December 20, 2022 Love the comment my dude
And then SJ refuses to sell/trade immediately, but prefers to auction those players before the draft. Maybe that's already happening, who knows.
They have refused to trade. Damian Alguera’s father was telling people that Damian was sought after by Philadelphia Union for his homegrown rights and offered San Jose 100k. Not only was Philly rebuffed, the Quakes would not offer Alguera a homegrown contract because they already had two young keepers on HG deals.
I'm all in favor of providing compensation in player movement, but this kind of thing is something Garber needs to stamp out. Teams getting compensation for training = great. Teams restricting access to talent they don't want = awful.
Should pretty much be a standardized (and achievable) release fee, like how La Liga makes teams put in release clauses.
You do that kind of stuff too often and your academy gets a reputation in the community. Kids don't go play there. That's a hard-learned lesson for some clubs. The rules are changing. Maybe not fast enough for some, but they are.
San Jose Earthquakes Academy is on its way! https://www.bigsoccer.com/index.php?posts/41099243/ Rumor that a few academy kids are moving to USL before going overseas at 18.
https://www.oaklandrootssc.com/news...-youth-national-team-midfielder-ethan-kohler/ Weird timing that Luchi takes over as coach to develop academy players and two defensive guys leave for Oakland.
They have both recently been called into youth national team camps. They are rated high for their positions. They share the same agent and supposedly Kohler has signed a pre-agreement to join a German club at the end of summer.
Yes could be. I think they could have also decided that an MLS deal would be too long for their desired developmental timelines. I think the majority of home grown contracts are 4 years with a fifth year team option. Their agent may have convinced them to get to Europe ASAP by taking a one year USL deal until they turn 18.

Signing Chance directly without him even officially joining the club is going to piss a lot of families/players off. Quakes have some very good players in the young age groups, some with passports. Can see this not ending well for them.

The Quakes, who have still never sold a domestic player (eg Kikanovic, Cowell, etc.) that came through their system outside the US (Lima to Austin, Callender's rights to Miami), have already lost at least three potential homegrown signings to USL teams: -Drew Murray to Oakland Roots -Ethan Kohler to Oakland Roots -Fidel Barajas to Charleston Battery 10000%. Offering short and flexible deals with more opportunity for immediate playing time. If MLS does not respond, it will continue to happen.
