Reporting with @SamBorden. Sources tell ESPN that Earnie Stewart is out as sporting director of the USSF.— Jeff Carlisle (@JeffreyCarlisle) January 26, 2023
Not that I really care that Earnie Stewart got canned but what exactly is the job of a sporting director of the USSF? If anything, because he is Dutch and played in Holland, you would think he would have helped the US beat the Dutch but obviously he didn't do that so what else could he possibly do to help the national team? I mean the coach and his assistants pick the players, put forth the tactics and game plans, so what possibly does a sporting director do? Organize hotels, training facilities and other and accommodations?
I'm wondering if Stewart's contract was up at the end of the World Cup Cycle? New CEO low balls an extension, because they want to cut costs and restructure? The Reyna "scandal" offers some convenient cover for the restructure?
"U.S. Soccer announced on Monday that Stewart has been appointed as the first-ever Sporting Director. In his new role, Stewart will oversee U.S. Soccer’s entire Sports Performance Department, including the men’s and women’s senior and youth National Team programs. He will also oversee all other Sports Performance departments, including Talent Identification, High Performance and Analytics. "
Obviously, Stewart must not have done any of those things very well because he is already out after only 3 years and 5 months on the job.
Sounds like Stewart leaving for a new gig (PSV Eindhoven), not fired. US Soccer changes: McBride, Stewart move on as coaching search continues By Jonathan Sigal Thursday, Jan 26, 2023, 11:32 AM
Well, considering they had apparently just extended his contract through 2026, not really A moment after this, U.S. Soccer confirmed to me that it was through 2026. https://t.co/fPUMcnZrtE— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) January 26, 2023
BREAKING: Claudio Reyna resigns as sporting director of Austin FC.Reyna will remain as a technical advisor to ATX. pic.twitter.com/BaUwm3HFBb— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) January 26, 2023 Thx, Jay!
Saw someone on a reddit Austin FC thread suggest this is a first step to him taking Ernie Stewart's vacated position with the USSF.
It is convenient, for Earnie to escape a shit show not of his own making except in who he hired. But not in the sense that this gives him a way not to be fired.
He probably already had it lined up or they were seeking him or vice versa, probably before or right after US was eliminated.
