I seriously don’t get this. Are we pulling for Dortmund or the USMNT? Because Gio was lazy and disruptive at the World Cup, when he could’ve played like this instead.

You mentioned Reyna when pondering who Reus would bench. Reyna is already starting on the bench. Maybe you mean Reyna won't play at all once Reus returns?

So happy for Gio to back up his game-winner with another. Still doesn't look 90 minutes fit to me but perhaps he will get a half in the next game? He showed a bit more hustle on D in his sub appearance today and that is a great sign.

Reus is a BVB legend and will certainly start again once fully fit. But Reyna could easily take Adeyemi's spot at LW who only has a single assist in 13 games w/ BVB. He can also share time with Reus and Brandt at the dual 10/8 positions that BVB likes to employ... IMO that is an ideal position for Reyna but it can take a very long time to get fully fit after serious hammy injuries... so I am OK with Reyna switching between starting and being the 1st sub in. If he can do that, stay healthy and continue to produce then I will be a very happy camper. He still has a tremendously high ceiling.... could be World Elite. Man o man do we need an offensive player like that.

Your opinion. His reaction was normal to me and the whole situation is a non-issue

I’m pulling for Gio. Whether he’s on MNT, BVB or any other club. I love him

Imagine all the hard work he put into getting fit in time for the WC... likely his biggest dream since he was a child. Only to arrive to have the coach say you aren't going to play a big role. What was the point of that? The players should arrive, perform in practice and then deal with the coach's decision as the games are played. I seriously don't understand the purpose of shattering his confidence and dream up front. Why don't you let him show what he has on the pitch in preparation and go from there?

At any rate... totally with you. I am a huge Gio fan and want the very best for him for both club and country.

Doubtful…but if he does that means BVB is on a long winning streak.

    Gotcha!

This would seem like the best option. I really want Adeyami to do well but, man, he's turning out to be a bust. I really enjoyed watching him in the CL with Saltzburg last season. Malen on the other hand can go back to Holland. Reus is 33 and injured rather often so sharing playin time would be a good assumption. Here is the issue; Terzić. Tactically - he's a shit manager. BVB looked gutless today. Schlotterbeck was my MOTM.

Also, wondering why Süle was named capt over Brandt. usually there is some level of seniority that decides this.

Unless BVB have completely changed the way that they operate, they have no intention of keeping Gio glued to the bench. They hope to make a lot of money on the kid and can’t do that if he is not on the field.

I always appreciate your insight into BVB topics, so what is the chatter on keeping replacing Terzic, and who would you want?

I assume he would have played like that at the World Cup. When he entered vs Netherlands my soccer playing adult sons (nonpartisans in the Berhalter wars) were like "Where has HE been? Why hasn't he been starting?"

My buds in Dortmund, some close to the club, are tight lipped about what is happening behind the scenes. But, I don't think they are tightlipped as much as they have no clue...and this kind of leads me to believe that Watzke and Kehl aren't sure either. Vocally, they are complaining about the lack of tactics. Both offensively and defensively. How is it possible that players like Modeste (a proven BuLi striker) Adeyami, Malen, Schlotterbeck all have had this rather mediocre season compared to the expectations? Did we expect Modeste to be the next Haaland? No, but holy crap...he could not hit water falling off a boat. And our defense? We brought in Sule and Schlotterbeck to solve the issues in the back but no, it's not being solved. Why? No managing, little coaching.

Dortmund have just bought another winger. 16 year old Julien Duranville, from Anderlecht (already played some 1st team min). Another winger? What about replacing LB Guerrero who leaves at the end of this summer along with Nico Schultz? That is where the priorities need to be, and they aren't. That's not on Terzić, but Kehl. And here is the analysis of the kid; extremely quick and agile, great dribbler, great presser, poor finisher. Poor finisher? Fucking hell.

The biggest issue is; Bayern have near perfect seasons save for a few...maybe like one out of every five is a season Bayern may want to forget...and this is the second time we miss out on Bayern not having yet another amazing season. Its not about beating Bayern. It's about not losing to the Freiburgs and Leipzigs. It just doesn't feel like Terzić is the one to change that.

So yes, they are calling for his head at the end of this season. I do not think we will see a change during the season unless we are finding ourselves in a relegation fight or perhaps outside of Europe. Who should replace him? Hard to say...not Lampard.

Anyway, you wanted a rant...hope this helps.

Thats not it at all. We are rooting for our best player, who was only lazy when told in advance he COULDNT play like that because he wouldnt be allowed to play much at all.

Lets not make up false histories to support a narrative. When Reyna was on the field at the world cup for his brief minutes, he played just the same as he has with Dortmund.

I'm not a Berhalter fan, but Reyna himself admitted that he (Reyna) behaved unprofessionally. He should never have been selected in the first place. Maybe by next cycle, he'll have his head screwed on and be more of a team player.

Best thing for him right is just to concentrate on his club career and remain healthy.

Folks, we need to stop the national team discussion. I realize it's hard to discuss Gio without triangulating off of events in Qatar, so here's a hard line: comments about Greg Berhalter, Claudio/Danielle Reyna, Qatar locker rooms and leadership retreats are all off limits here. Violations will result in bans.

BVB rightly have him on a pitch count until he can prove he's 90 minutes fit. Given that he had two notable setbacks around the same stage in his recovery as now, it makes complete sense to bring him on for 20-30 minute stretches rather than start him and know he has to go at least 45 at full speed.

Hamstrings are tricky, as we've seen with Weah and now Gio.

I get it, but a few things to consider. Many German/American fans of BuLi Clubs that enjoy the train wreck known as YA are not on those threads so we miss on some of the rather important snippets and are curious to know more about what would affect performance and form of a YA while playing for [enter XYZ club name one follows with a YA player].

There doesn't need to be a full on USMNT convo if it is already happening in other threads, but when the celebrations he has at Dortmund are a direct msg to the US NT coach, and when his form, is a carry over from NT duty, man, it gets very hard to separate those two conversations when club performance is affected by NT events and vice-versa.

I don't have an answer or a solution but it may be hard to know exactly where that line in the sand may be at times. My 2 cents.

Don't you have to get on the field to play?

It sounds like it was a badly-handled mess by all parties involved. I can't actually imagine it being handled worse, given the slow-rolling fall out, but if we're really trying to answer this question, Gio is likely to provide much more net plus to the USMNT from here out than Gregg (or anyone who might be offended by that) I'm not really a fan of uber-cocky showy sports guys, but it's also kind of hard to argue that a lot of extraordinary players are huge, cocky, chip-on-the shoulder types. We just don't have a lot of them in US soccer. Maybe Gio will be our 1st world class bad-boy. Mathis almost was. May Gio stay thin and angry long enough to make a mark.
