Yeah i agree. I had the chance to watch Gomez live a couple of times before his last two injuries. He was better than anything we currently have, I really thought he'd push on and maybe even become England captain one day. Shame all the injuries have hampered him and he may never get back to what he was.
Is Maguire that bad on the ball? I don't know the stats but I've always thought his composure in possession is one of his strong suits.
He's slow on the ball and his passing certainly isn't top level, although not bad. I think one of the things you notice with Martinez playing for United is how much quicker he plays the ball up the pitch than Maguire. I actually think Colwill is quite a lot like Martinez in this regard. Maguire is also right footed which isn't as optimal as being left footed like Colwill is.
Maguire's passing is top level. It's probably as good or better than any other CB in the league, certainly any CB that England have.
This is a pretty wild claim in my opinion. He isn't a better passer than Stones for England. Stones is actually one of the best about by many metrics. VVD is clearly a level above Maguire in this regard. Ruben Dias as well. Then there's Laporte and Silva. I think that even Luke Shaw is a better passer in the centre back role. He's a lot better than some people give him credit for, you'd find plenty of fans that would say he's United 5th best CB on the ball, which isn't true. I think the big gripe United fans have is that he holds onto the ball too long and slows down the play. He can dribble well and move the ball up the pitch if that's what you mean? I'm doubtful you could find any stats to back up the claim that he's the best passer in the league.
Probably one of the greatest 1v1 defenders in the history of football. This is insane from Aaron Wan Bissaka. 77% career average in effectively 1v1 battles pic.twitter.com/rHQu9r3qsL— luke (@louorns) January 19, 2023
He’s unfortunately just not good enough with the ball or going forward. If you were to combine both TAA and AWB you would have the most complete right back.
We can but pray Rico Lewis gets converted into a proper central midfielder (or rather, moves back to that position). He looks the part on the ball and is exactly what England are missing to complete the midfield. We're desperate for a new midfielder to break through. Don't think it could be underestimated what an Guardiola tier central midfielder would do for the side, that and Colwill meeting his potential would be transformative. Certainly he doesn't play like a traditional right back so more than likely he'll get lost in that position for England, and at any rates its a well stocked position. His defending also isn't that good, he's just really, really good at one on one defending but his positioning is very often hopeless. He's like an Adama Traore for right back - one facet of the game he massively excels at, below average for pretty much everything else.
To be fair AWB has been in very good form for United recently. If someone like Big Sam was in charge of England I could see him getting a call up.
Also for Colwill personally. There was no UEFA U17 tournament due to Covid and he missed winning the U19 trophy last year due to his U21 promotion. This summer is probably his last chance of attending a major International youth competition. Agree and I hope Colwill will not suffer the same fate. He's out until March apparently.
I don't get how Colwill apparently having played 7 games for Brighton in the league is already ahead in (England consideration) of a player like Max Kilman.
Don't they both have a tendency to be not aware of players around them. Both are accused of having attackers go past on the blindside repeatedly.

Bigger question than ever before about whether Ramsdale should be number one now. First English keeper to still be involved in a title race in the new year since Joe Hart?
