Thank you for this. Palhinha....27 years - if he was going to peak and start for Portugal it would have happened already. He is average at best. We have tried tons of different DM since Costinha retired. Matheus Nunes - Why are we talking about a Brazilian reject? Vitinha - Doesn't start always - Rarely scores - Has played more because Messi has not played much since World Cup. At best he is as good as Bernardo Silva Bernardo Silva - 28 years old - Where was he during the world cup? Bruno Fernandes - 28 years old - If he was as good as you say don't you think we would have done better controlling the ball verses Spain, France, Germany? Now lets look at the leagues these players are excelling in. England - we always beat England. We are technically better then England but England hustles and works harder. The games always are close but you usually win. We also have a long history of average Portuguese players excelling in England and doing nothing for this country. The fact Mountino is still starting at 37 years old in England says it all.
So many of your points can be explained by coach mistakes . The EPL is the top league in the world . Average players do not excel in this league . Top players excel coach by coaches that know how best to utilize those players . Nothing wrong with a hammer unless you need a screwdriver . Santos would hammer that screw . If you can’t see that then there is no real point to discuss any further . Further more fvck off Mourinho
Oh and forgot to mention , yes wolves still playing Moutinho , that’s one of the reasons they are getting relegated this year .
Haha the point is...if England is that good then why is he starting. BTW....don't be so amused that Wolves are being relegated. There are 11 players from Portugal on that team and 7 have been called to the National Team.
Again, your looking at how Santos did things. If Martinez has half a brain he won't repeat the same mistakes. Santos was in love with William and Danilo. Palhinha is among the highest percentile in the entire EPL in tackles won. He was a late bloomer even in Portugal, 27 years old is not old, he's still in his prime. He's simply our best pure Defensive Midfielder. Costinha? That 2004 midfield was all from Porto and won the UCL with Mourinho so of course it made sense to play Deco/Maniche/Costinha back then. Matheus Nunes Brazilian reject? We need to stop with this nonsense. France takes advantage of so many of their old colonies to have a stacked squad, why can't we? Matheus is press resistant and breaks lines with ease. He's only 23, he'll only get better. Again, being linked with Liverpool is no coincidence. Vitinha has 16 apps in Ligue 1, played in and started all 6 UCL games, he's played almost every game for PSG with and without Messi/Mbappe/Neymar. Bernardo - I'll agree he needs to do way more, but again if our new coach has half a brain he'll play him where he should thrive. Bruno - is he a Xavi or Iniesta? No but Bruno provides way more verticality, he won't hesitate to make risky passes to progress us forward and is a danger from outside the box. The ideal #8.
I will be here to remind you of how wrong you are. You can't argue with people always blaming the coach.
Roberto Martinez is the Pep Guardiola of national teams. They are both bald, olive skinned & Catalan and they both won trophies in England. What am i missing? Portugal got themselves a gem. Quality coaches aren't exactly lining up to manage national teams and we just so happened to get the best manager available. To the people that continue to whine that Roberto isn't Portuguese, why does he look like my cousin Francisco from down the street? Don't split hairs. A Spaniard is a Portuguese. That's what Europe and the entire world thinks so just live with it.
Romar can shut up the haters when he fields a competitive team. A winning attitude and getting rid of the bad apples is what he should strive for.
This. As much as I dislike having a Spaniard as our couch, Spaniards and Portuguese are the same at the end of the day whether you like it or not. I’m optimistic about Romar, he brought Belgium to semis in 2018, beat us in the euro, and kept Belgium number 1 in FIFA rankings for years. Clearly he did something right, better than santos at least. Belgium plays attacking football and always looked better than Portugal other than the euro game where we dominated but couldn’t find the net bad luck (i.e Morocco game). Let’s give him a chance and see what happens.
This. Dude looks like every bald Portuguese at the festa. He kept Belgium number 1 for years. I’m optimistic and hopeful. I say Romar fields a solid team, we finally get better tactics and everything runs smoothly. We win our second euro.
Roberto Martinez is a work-a-holic Attending games and going around personally meeting players, prospects and club executives. The man is up for the job in a big way. I admire that.
The only thing Santos did was praying and saying in public he was a fervent Catholic and anti abortion. Watching football wasn't for him.
He never infused modern tech into his coaching. He is a dinosaur. Santos probably never even heard of analytics. It's not Santos fault, he is just a product of his generation. They are all like that, it's not just him. When your methods are out-dated, it starts to show on the football pitch against teams like Morocco. Modern tech/analytics is something Roberto talks about all the time. It's just refreshing to see us get a manager like this.
Rafa has no place in this team. He is 29 years old and has scored 0 goals in 25 appearances. He was called by Santos but choose to stay home because he was not likely to play baring injury and wanted to spend the holidays with family.
he definitely has a place in this team. he's playing unreal the last couple of months. players that play for the NT should always be based on current form. plain and simple
Already watched 3 games in one week in the job, probably the same number of games Santos watched in 1 year, at least watching his lineups...
