Ugh, I was hoping the rumors weren't true, but here we go. https://www.espn.com/soccer/united-...-berhalter-domestic-violence-incident-sources
Yeah, we all saw this yesterday. It was something that happened 31 years ago, when he was 18. He and his wife (to be) were able to deal with it and move past it. Imo, the Reyna's come across as whiny little butthurts. Claudio would be better served advising Gio to stop lollygagging, and play harder.
Looks like GGG is out. Hudson taking over for Camp Cupcake: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...nthony-Hudson-named-temporary-head-coach.html
Twitter's been on fire with this since yesterday. It happened when he was 18! They've been happily married for 25yrs!! It's disgusting to get into people's personal lives. I don't like him as a coach, but his private life shouldn't have anything to do with us. The Reyna's are coming across as a very disgusting family unfortunately.
The Reyna's look terrible and embarrassed themselves. But according to Reyna's wife's statement, Berhalter lied/minimized the incident in his statement. If he lied to US Soccer in their investigation then that will be a reason for US Soccer to let him go / not renew him.
wow wow wow I thought Gully Squaders were joking when they said the "blackmail" was coming from the Reynas. The only word for this is sick. And in the end, it will hurt Gio the most. If Gregg is out, that's fine with me based on his roster decisions and lack of tactical response. But it would be unfair to fire him if the predominant reason is a 30-year-old teenage incident reported by 2 angry parents.
Hudson has not had the most stellar coaching career, but, still manages to land gigs. Must be a likeable guy, or has abilities not borne out by his won-loss record.
Former US soccer star Claudio Reyna, wife exposed in alleged Gregg Berhalter World Cup blackmail scheme
Yea, don't get me started on Hudson. One of the worst coaches I've seen in my life. Yet he keeps getting work. The good ol boys club, I guess.
I've read more than a few negative comments from kiwis fans. Also, in Colorado he threw a lot of players under the bus. If berhalter didn't do it for you, Hudson is much worse.
The whole Reyna vs Berhalter thing to me exemplifies what is wrong with soccer in the US. It’s all a “good old boys” thing where who you know is often more important than talent.
Really bad optics for the sport, that's for sure. The whole thing reeks of the tackiest reality show.
The USMNT assistant coaches were Luchi, Hudson and Callaghan. Luchi is head coach of the Quakes and Callaghan has a job with Philly Union. So that only leaves Hudson who can immediately take over for January camp. I still have the following questions: 1. This was reported as "blackmail" but what were the demands being made? So far just seems like grievances. Not sure why Greg needed to go public with this. 2. What's next for Berhalter? Will he still be considered for US head coach position after the investigation?
Sounds Berhalter went public to control the narrative around the allegation of domestic violence. Doubt he ever coaches again, and certainly not for Nats.
It was an allegation that he admitted to. A one time event that he and his wife-to-be managed to work past and have been married for 25 years and have 4 kids. Danielle Reyna knew about it all when it happened and didn't alert the authorities and seemingly had no objections to the relationship, nor did it seem to impact her relationship with Berhalter. That is, until she thought her precious one was being treated unfairly, and then she and Claudio throws Berhalter and his wife, ( her long time friend) under the bus.
That's the nasty part. Imagine holding on to this for over 30 yrs. Then using it just because your bratty son was brooding when told he wasn't going to be a big part of the team in the WC. And they were supposedly great friends. Can't imagine how they treat their enemies.
To be fair - Berhalter threw Gio under the bus first, in that unnecessary interview after the cup. However, that doesn’t excuse what “Gino’s mommy” did. A pox on both their houses!!!
Danielle's motivation seems petty and selfish. Gregg on the other hand has reached the pinnacle of coaching in the United States. If he had gone public about kicking his SO at the time it happened his career trajectory might have gone in a different direction. So now that he's reached the top his past has caught up with him. We all have to live with the consequences of our actions and it seems to me Gregg delayed his fate more so than most. These days if a player kicks his SO in a parking lot the video would likely end up on Facebook and that player would be very unlikely to coach the USMNT. So Danielle is nasty, but I don't feel bad for Gregg either.
