This is the only kind of soccer I went to as a kid before the formation of the NASL.

Happy 76th birthday to Denmark international Jørgen Kristensen, the pass-master wizard who actually played for the Detroit Cougars in the inaugural NASL season in 1968, then went back to Europe and won the 1974 UEFA Cup with Feyenoord and reached the 1977 German Cup final with Hertha Berlin BSC, returned to the NASL and recorded 12 goals and 73 assists in 103 games with the Chicago Sting (1978-80), Tulsa Roughnecks (1980) and Calgary Boomers (1981) -- earning 2 all-NASL selections and finishing 9th in assists all-time -- and finally turning indoors, where he made 224 appearances in 7 MISL seasons for the Wichita Wings and Kansas City Comets, was a 4-time MISL All Star, and finished 8th all-time in assists.

NASL Memories: John Dowie was a Scottish midfielder who developed through the Glasgow Rangers youth system but hit the big time with Fulham, reaching the FA Cup final in 1975 and later playing for Celtic in the 1977 Scottish Cup final. Born on 12 December 1955, Dowie (number 6) was loaned to the Houston Hurricane for the 1978 NASL season and responded with 2 goals and 6 assists in 21 games, often marking some of the league's top players. Sadly, Dowie died in 2016 at the age of 60.

NASL World Cup: With the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar underway, it is worth remembering how many World Cup stars over the years came to compete in North America. For instance, Don Masson, Scotland (1978).

MISL Dateline: On 12 December 1985, the San Diego Sockers got 2 goals each from Jacques Ladouceur and Steve Zungul and defeated Dynamo Kiev, 6-4, in an exhibition match at the San Diego Sports Arena.

MISL Dateline: On 13 December 1987, Tacoma Stars forward Steve Zungul notched 1 goal and 2 assists to become the first MISL player to register 1,000 career points in a 7-2 win over the Los Angeles Lazers at the Tacoma Dome.

NASL Dateline: On 13 December 1982, the New York Cosmos traded forward Steve Wegerle to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers for the Strikers' number 1 picks in the 1983 and 1984 NASL Drafts.

Happy 72nd birthday to U.S. international Kyle Rote Jr. (pictured at right), the 1st great native-born American and the player who legitimized soccer as a sport by winning ABC-TV's "Superstars" competition a record 3 times, but who also championed North American players' rights and salaries, even as he scored 43 goals in 142 NASL games with Dallas Tornado (1972-78) and Houston Hurricane (1979), leading the NASL in scoring in 1973 and winning the MVP Award, and memorably exchanging U.S. and Brazilian flags with Pelé prior to the 1975 made-for-TV exhibition between Dallas and the New York Cosmos.

Happy 70th birthday to Haiti international Frantz Mathieu, the sleek defender who spent most of his professional career in North America, winning Soccer Bowl titles in 1981 and 1984 with the Chicago Sting - and winning Soccer Bowl Man of the Match honors in 1981 - making 50 appearances with the Montreal Manic in 1982-83, earning all-NASL honors in 1980 and 1981, rolling up 145 MISL appearances with the Baltimore Blast (1985-87) and Chicago Sting (1984-85, 1987-88) and making the 1985 MISL All Star team

NASL Memories: Phil Woosnam was a Welsh international with a West Ham United and Aston Villa pedigree who emigrated to North America in 1967 and wound up leading the soccer revolution. Born on 22 December 1932, Woosnam served a player-coach of the Atlanta Chiefs in the inaugural NASL season in 1968 and won both the NASL title and NASL Coach of the Year honors, then took over as commissioner of the NASL 1 year later. Under Woosnam, the NASL grew quickly into a national force and an international phenomenon, boasting a galaxy of world stars and making soccer an American sport. He landed major sponsors and 2 national TV contracts, and the NASL grew to 24 teams by 1978, but spiraling salaries, indoor competition, labor unrest and over-expansion led to the league's demise in 1984. Later, Woosnam helped land the 1994 FIFA World Cup for the United States, managed the Olympic Soccer finals in 1996, and served as managing director of U.S. Soccer's marketing. Woosnam, who died in 2013 at the age of 80, remains integral to the success of both the NASL and professional soccer in North America, and he was elected to the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1997

Happy 76th birthday to Peter Daniel (number 17), the tough central defender who turned pro at 19 with Derby County in 1965 and went on to capture 7 trophies -- including 2 English League titles -- in 14 seasons with the Rams, then played 2 years in the NASL on loan to the Vancouver Whitecaps, scoring 2 goals in 47 appearances and capturing Soccer Bowl '79.

Happy 63rd birthday to Hans Kraay Jr. (number 20), the Dutch midfielder who followed his coach-father, Hans Sr., to the NASL as a 20-year old in 1979, scoring 5 goals in 38 games with the Edmonton Drillers (1979) and San Jose Earthquakes (1980) before returning to Europe and played in England, Belgium and The Netherlands and ultimately became a popular TV personality and singer and hit number 3 on the Dutch pop charts in 2003.

Very sad day for Quake fans when they traded Paul Child...I was gutted.

He epitomized the attitude the early Quakes would be known for... classic underdog grit, heart. amazing work rate and never giving up mentality...that didn't start with the goonies...it was there from day 1.

Makes my blood boil watching some of the slack jawed shit show seasons we've had to endure...so far removed from the "all in" original mentality.

That is an awesome picture though. Heston looks like the ball is made out of Lindberger

Paul Child will have made a great tandem with George Best.

It was Paul's dream to play with a player like Best but it wasn’t to be as he was traded 4 months before George landed in San Jose.

Child was a workhorse type of a player and I always wished they would have played him at midfield as opposed to forward.

I think had he played center mid as opposed to striker, it would have been a better fit for his style of play and with his running, he could have been a great playmaker.

He was a good finisher...crazy hops, excellent header of the ball...led the league in scoring in 74. He probably could have played anywhere in the midfield or wing and been successful...the dude was nails...just a great all around player.

Happy 72nd birthday to Italy international Roberto Bettega, the high-scoring striker who won 7 Serie A titles in 14 seasons with Juventus -- along with the 1979 Coppa Italia and the 1977 UEFA Cup -- while also competing for the Azzurri at the 1978 FIFA World Cup and the 1980 European Championships, then jumped to the NASL in 1983 and becamemone of the last great world stars to play in North America, scoring 11 goals in 48 games over 2 seasons and helping the Toronto Blizzard reach back-to-back Soccer Bowl finals.

Pelé, Brazil’s mighty king of ‘beautiful game,’ dies (chicagotribune.com)

Pele has left the building. He came to San Jose twice in the 1970s to play against the Earthquakes. In this photo below, at Spartan Stadium, you see Bruce Jenner in the top row and Pele in the middle with Lou Rawls right next to him.Margie Dorr-Zirilli and Debbie Hilpert are in there too, since they were cheerleaders. If you don't yet have my book on the Quakes, it's currently gathering dust at every crumbling CVS in town, so go pick it up. Several Pele stories in that book. Nothing but love, the most humble dude on Earth, a true masterpiece of a human being. Rest in peace. [IMG]

Happy 74th birthday to Dave Jokerst, the American goalkeeper and top baseball prospect from the St. Louis youth programmes who played 6 NASL seasons with the hometown St. Louis Stars, then moved west with the club in 1978 and added 2 more seasons with the California Surf, registering 13 shutouts in 68 career appearances.

Happy 69th birthday to U.S. international Alan Green (number 28), the 5-foot-8 English-born striker who scored 30 goals in 7 seasons at Coventry City, then jumped to the NASL in 1977 and never looked back, rolling up 82 goals -- 10th best all-time -- in 132 games with the Washington Diplomats (1977, 1979-80), Jacksonville Tea Men (1981-82), Team America (1983) and the New York Cosmos (1984), earning 2 all-NASL selections and helping the Cosmos reach the 1984 NASL Indoor finals.

Happy 75th birthday to Geoff Davies, the English midfielder who bagged goals in bunches, rolling up 52 scores -- including 7 hat tricks -- for Wigan in 3 seasons, then starred in the NASL beginning in 1975 with the Boston Minutemen, where he notched 10 goals in 29 games, then added seasons with the Chicago Sting (1976) and San Jose Earthquakes (1977) before helping the Los Angeles Skyhawks reach the 1978 ASL championship match and adding a final MISL campaign with the San Francisco Fog (1980-81)

NASL Memories: Gordon Banks is regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in soccer history, leading England to victory in the 1966 FIFA World Cup and making what many believe was the best save ever 4 years later against Pelé and Brazil -- but it wasn't until Banks lost his right eye in an auto accident in 1972 that his true skill shone through. Born on 30 December 1939, Banks ended a 5-year retirement to sign with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 1977, and promptly recorded 9 shutouts and a 1.12 goals against average to win the NASL Goalkeeper of the Year Award. Banks played one more season in South Florida and remains a key figure in the development of American soccer, and was named to the FIFA 100 Greatest Living Footballers team in 2004. Sadly, Banks passed away in his sleep in 2019 at the age of 81, and goalkeepers from his English sides served as pallbearers (Joe Anyon, Chesterfield/ Jack Butland, Stoke City/ Joe Hart, England/ Kasper Schmeichel, Leicester City).

MISL Dateline: On 31 December 1985, San Diego Sockers forward Branko Segota was named MISL Offensive Player of the Week after racking up 6 goals and 4 assists in his team's 3 victories, while Kansas City Comets goalkeeper Alan Mayer was named the MISL Defensive Player of the Week after surrendering just 7 goals in 3 wins that keyed a 5-game winning streak.

To quash your curiosity, although I know and have met many NASL players, I've never taken a picture with any of them.
