Why is that? "the largest analytics department in MLS" = both ambition AND smarts It may not be enough by itself, but that's certainly a step in the right direction
So, you have come to the conclusion that using analytics to evaluate players is not going to work. ! guess you can close down the thread you started called, "Soccer Metrics to Evaluate Players".
Hey, I am a fan of analytics! The thing that won’t work is depending entirely on analytics in identifying inexpensive players who are going to turn out to be gems. I didn’t want to argue, but I was not convinced by the way Tutul was extolling the analytics tech and the Philadelphia development model without any mention of Fisher spending more money. Without spending more, we are not going to compete against the 2 LA teams. Maybe we’ll win a game here or there, but we’ll just keeping building our nest in the bottom of the league. Even if the analytics+academy worked, it would take 4 years to see much, just like Almeyda had planned with his 4-year project.
Good thing MLS is a relatively young league How many games it would take various franchises to hit .500 all-time. https://t.co/MTlFwGFnK9 pic.twitter.com/eF557tpNye— Philip Bump (@pbump) December 8, 2022 All-time winning percentages for active franchisesLeft: .500 and aboveRight: Below .500Via @washingtonpost pic.twitter.com/zNM0zPNcBx— Kendall Baker (@kendallbaker) December 7, 2022
The A’s have been around for more than a century and in multiple cities. Fisher might actually have a winning record during his ownership stint.
I didn't add up the numbers but looks like winning record since 2005. 10 seasons over .500 and 8 seasons under, and 4 seasons close to .600 and only one near .400 (or worse), that being this past season. That's why when people gripe that "we're the Oakland A's of MLS!" , my response is, "No we're not but I'd be happy if we get there some day" .
2022 MLS Fan Cost Index Average cost to bring a family of four to a game Code: Los Angeles FC $395.46 Charlotte FC $377.94 Inter Miami $348.44 DC United $347.86 Columbus Crew $346.68 Philadelphia Union $336.31 Toronto FC $336.29 Austin FC $326.56 San Jose Earthquakes $322.72 Sporting KC $315.38 Chicago Fire $307.63 Portland Timbers $307.30 Minnesota United FC $304.37 LA Galaxy $304.22 Seattle Sounders $297.63 Real Salt Lake $289.94 New York Red Bulls $287.98 New York City FC $281.78 FC Cincinnati $280.56 Atlanta United FC $272.88 Nashville SC $270.58 Houston Dynamo $264.83 New England Revolution $264.70 Colorado Rapids $264.22 CF Montréal $261.54 Vancouver Whitecaps FC $253.64 Orlando City $251.14 FC Dallas $201.44
Perhaps median is the better approach than average. Austin, for example, is I'm told able to charge in excess of $800 per ticket for premium seats. Also, it would be interesting to see the range of pricing for each team. The Quakes standing ticket is a pretty good deal. Roughly $20 per game last I looked. Be interesting to see if anyone can beat it. And wrapping in hot dogs and drinks for a family of four is misleading. The LAFC supporters aren't paying for that shit.
Years ago on business I went to a Thrashers hockey game in Atlanta. (They've since relocated and rebranded). I walked up to the downtown arena and looked at the ticket pricing. They offered a $10 seat in the rafters. I figured had to be something wrong with it, so I got the next lowest at $32. I was four rows lower and still a long way from the ice. Moral of the story, it's the entry price point that is most relevant. Not the average.
It's nice to have some comparison though. It's just the slightest bit of pressure for clubs not to jack up prices on everything just because they can. Doubt it helps though. I'm sure we're not too far away from the $15 can of beer.
Is beer included in the survey? Doubt it. Many MLS teams don’t have tailgating. You could go a full season without paying nearly $15 for a beer — or any amount at all. (I always have extras.).
“The FCI uses the price of four weighted average non-premium tickets combined with the lowest stadium pricing for four sodas, four hot dogs, two beers and two souvenirs (team scarves for MLS, adjustable team hats for other sports), along with a nearby parking spot.”
Okay. That’s stupid. Who’s doubling up on sodas while dad has two beers? And why ignore premium tickets? Finally, scarves are season ticket giveaways in San José this year, so your “average” fan is not splurging for two more.
