I found one thing interesting. The comment "cultural parochialism". The writer may not have realized it, but he was guilty of a bit of the same thing. There's nothing wrong with some contextualization--and we're not required to use British terms all the time simply because we are "two nations separated by a common language". There's nothing wrong with "deke", for example (and it seems to be a Canadian lone word in any case). And yeah, we have commercials, and some of those are pretty annoying, but we also don't have to buy a license to watch tv like one does in the UK. A good chunk of the World Cup has been on broadcast TV here.

That said, he's not wrong about the announcers. Not one bit.

    It's The Guardian. That's a given.

There's always something wrong with that word. That's one of several places I actually agree with the writer. Also, "loan".

The dumbest, most unfair, and assholiest part of the article is probably that one. Those commercials are bought by FIFA sponsors and Fox has zero to do with their content. The commercials are almost universally terrible, but it's not Rupert's call.

Jacquie Oatley has been a pleasant surprise.

The antics that Kate Abdo has to oversee are pathetic. She deserves lots and lots of money for even agreeing to that.

Rob Stone is, quite simply, a fixture who has probably forgotten more about soccer than the author ever knew. He persona is what it must be in this cultural context.

I wonder if the writer knows that if the pregame show is started via DVR delay, one can skip through the commercials and get to watch kickoff live.

On the other hand, he's right on any number of other things, particularly the non-entity that is JP Dellacamera. Conversely I do like listening to LDo for some reason, although sometimes it almost seems like he's dumbing down his comments a bit. But then he gives you stuff like "they needed a back side runner to freeze the keeper" which it seems to me is just him demonstrating that he's not, well, Stu Holden.

And while certainly nobody would argue that Alexi Lalas overheated shouting about crap he is sho kingly ignorant about, his blathering is a lot easier to stomach than the absurd crap Chad Ochocinco was.brought in to pollute the airwaves with.

Otherwise, its hard to argue with this apparent obsession they have with a football/soccer argument which hasn't been a real thing in 15-20 years.

And the motivation behind the constant flummery about how what a wonderful and exciting place Qatar is passes understanding.

I said much of this the first time this article was brought up. The writer, as is standard for Guardian writers, is a combination of good wordsmithing and pointmaking, and total shithousery with an axe to grind, usually political.

Maybe this is coming from the insipid "Tonight" show which I have watched exactly onece, but I haven't seen much of anything regarding that at any length that didn't originate from a Lay's commercial.

Listen, Doha itself isn't Vegas. No ********ing shit. It's ruled by autocrats who have different levels of value depending on what sort of ex-pat you are. This is also known, but there's not a lot anyone can do about it, certainly not Rob Stone.

However, if you're not a prick or a poor South Asian, there are some things that are interesting about it. Red Square and the Winter Palace are wonderful tourist destinations in a place ruled by a piece of shit. Does that make tourism to said places bad or worthy of dishonesty-tinged mockery or pretentious thinkpieces in The Guardian?

This NPR article matches a lot of my thoughts and my disappointment with youth soccer in the US. The good and the bad.

I realize that the twice-aforementioned article is, by now, old hat. But, in true dad fashion, that's generally when I pick up on things, and I just wanted to give props to two of my favorite passages in the article:

"Indeed the mispronunciation of foreign names – stadiums, players, whatever – has become a running joke on Fox’s Corniche set. Asked to offer a prediction before the US match against England, Lalas thundered, “I don’t know how they say it in the King’s English but dose a seero my friends to the USA,” helpfully demonstrating that he doesn’t know how to say “dos a cero” in the King’s Spanish either."

"Here, however, as host of Fox’s World Cup Tonight show, she has had to contend with the sentient televisual own goal that is “American soccer fan Chad Ochocinco”

I would have liked more demolition of the dim bulb that is Clint Dempsey. But it's certainly possible that I'm not very objective on that matter. I didn't care for the guy even before his introduction to the Seattle fan base (also the intro of his brief rap career?) which felt very much like something scripted by Vince McMahon. By the time he was tearing up a referee's notebook during a USL match . . . Well, I just don't like the guy. And his presence on TV is just plain bad.

At least you didn't try to present it as breaking news - that you yourself broke - and are instead just reacting to it.

    THAT makes perfect sense.

I just like that when reading these pieces I tend to learn a new word. This time it was "chuntering" which I can never recall hearing or reading previously. I tend to do it a lot, so knowing there is a specific word for "muttering/complaining in a low voice" pleases me.

I like JP Dellacamera. He may not be the most thrilling voice to listen to, but he's been calling soccer since before MLS even existed. He knows what he's talking about. It seems absurd to me that any American network that has the biggest soccer event in the world would NOT include him.

JP mysteriously lost the plot sometime in the late aughts or so. The cadence is just bad, with rising intonation on almost every phrase, in some weird effort to invoke suspense or something? Everything is POTENTIALLY EXCITING!, but as he ages, it rings hollower and hollower. And "Going long...!" is his goto for anything that is over 15 yards or in the air any distance whatsoever, usually to no-one.

I think maybe the latter is ESPN's reliance on him to call Wambach-era USWNT games, because it was all "Going long...!" He can't break himself of the habit, maybe.

He's still not as bad as Jack Edwards. Going into that pre-game commercial break, it was ALWAYS "back in a flash." Every game started with a phrase like "Columbus in black. Chicago in white going from right to left. The game is on!" Even if Ty Keough was talking at kickoff, he always made sure to get that in with no variation to wording other than teams and colors."

I read that JP has some sort of speech-related issue, which may contribute to the cadence issues.

Will do for sure. Thank you. 180 students this year, and you never know what might spark an interest.

It's genuinely one of the worst studio shows/crews in living memory, which is saying a lot because to the extent that American Exceptionalism exists, it is exemplified in just brutally bad sports pregame shows.

Your Dempsey point is correct though. It's embarrassing to watch him attempt to build a persona or personality, it's even more embarrassing to watch him attempt to string together coherent thoughts.

In a group text I asked some friends, "Why is Clint Dempsey such a corny ************************?" A USMNT and Sounders fan replied, "He's earned it." Maybe so, but that doesn't mean I have to watch it.

The man is from Nacogdoches, Texas. If a person expects to hear Franklin Foer when he opens his mouth of course they're going to be let down.
