That’s on Gregg as I said. If you have no way to use a guy, don’t bring him. The real question is why can’t you get anything out of a guy who’s been kicking MLS and Liga Mx in the shorts for years?
His best national team performance was against Martinique, but yeah surely Roldan woulda been the difference maker against World Cup opponents.....
That's not what I said. I said he could have absorbed some minutes to give the starters some rest. Theres no reason to make straw man arguments. If you think Iran's team is so much better than what he sees in MLS or CCL, that's ok. I've never seen a Persian Gulf League or Dubai league game, so I don't pretend to be in expert. As for the Gold Cup. He came in and created at least 3 chances in his 55 minutes against Mexico in the Gold Cup final while helping keep a clean sheet. He absolutely dominated the Martinique game like we've rarely seen a USMNT midfielder, so laugh it up but he's not the only guy who's played minnows.
Jesus Ferreira had a direct hand in 4 goals vs Grenada. What are the FIFA rankings for Martinique and Grenada?
Oh, I misunderstood you before. They aren’t good but we play lots of crap team and very rarely handle them to that degree. How about what he did in the Gold Cup final? Is Mexico as good as Iran?
Cowell took a step back with the Quakes this year. Part could be blamed on changing coaches and systems, but he is kind of a one trick pony. He has good speed, likes running towards defenders, and likes to cut to the center at the top of the box. Teams figured out not to let him run at you and force him to the end line. His defense was average at best. Yes, he is still a good prospect and I think this year will show more with a new coach.
Kind of late to this thread. First, I have never been a big fan of Greg's system, nor the MMA lineup. However, I'm pragmatic and not sure that there is a much better option with the player pool that panned out over the past two years. As far as roster makeup and squad selection, I played a wait and see approach. He generally got the starting lineup correct except for the striker position. We need more creativity in the midfield beyond Pulisic. I would not have started Reyna, but would have played him more and definitely in the first game. The goalkeeper and defense was good, but we didn't need an extra outside defender. We should have taken another forward. I would have built two teams which could have supported multiple formations which would provide more flexibility. Not sure the player pool existed, but we were a little too predictable with the play down the wings. He did build good team character and unity. With the challenges of COVID, limited to no competitive games, and a young team, I would give him a B overall.
