The other factors he may be referrig to may be: 1) JFA has overseas staff that look after and support their overseas players. They spend the money and time to create a local support network abroad. 2) Japanese players are sponsored by Japanese firms at all levels even for players in the lower European leagues. It's a huge windfall for smaller clubs in Europe to have a Japanese player. 3) Military service requirement for Korean players increases the risk factor and makes everything too complicated for European clubs. 4) Its a huge risk for Korean players to go to Europe as it typically takes years to find success or no success at all. Lower leagues/teams pay is low with no supplemental sponsorships, the player has no support network unless they are already a superstar and bring their own with them. Earning life of a player is short. If you are a Japanese player and it doesn’t work out, you return to J-league. If you are Korean player and it doesn’t work out, you do your military service and lose valuable years. 5) Most Korean players won’t get military service exemption. They have to incorporate it to their career plan which means a lot of opportunities cannot be taken up because its big personal risk that might screw your career up. 6) All of the above has cultivated an ethos in Japan that playing in Europe at any level is the aspiration. In Korea, there are many more risks and more & higher barriers, so going to Japan, ME or China is the go to move. Getting paid so you can have a post-football life and support your family is the aspiration.
Bento is one of many managers who insist on a tactical style they like. It has made Korea able to pass the ball decently, but as you say, adaptability is needed. If Bento hadn't quit and were more open to different footballing styles, a fun idea could have been implemented: getting a co-manager, like Sweden used to have. One for defensive matters, another one for offensive parts of the game (Bento).
Judging by those stats, Korea need a new keeper, and all will be fine in the future, even with Bento's adventurous style (may be kept by the new manager).
Be proud of your team, they gave their all, it's not their fault if they fell against Brazil. Moreover the Brazilians were able to rest their players, while the Koreans had only 3 days of rest. You arrived in the 8th final, it's already very good! I'm proud of you.
Our keeper Kim Seung-Gu actually made several good saves. If it wasn't for him, Brazil could have scored 6-7 goals.
In order to have a chance against a team like Brazil, Korea needed to play well, Brazil be a bit off their game, and have some good luck. Korea didn't have any of those things happen. As it happened time and time again, Kim Jinsu got beaten by the RW. Even so, had Vini Jr.'s shot been just a foot lower, it would have been headed clear. That penalty was very unlucky. The CB was just trying to clear the ball. Once 2-0 down, it was very difficult.
Yes, but this is the picture the stats paint. Shots on target roughly the same, but Korea ended up losing heavily, in the end. Bad luck? Definitely with 3 star players all carrying injuries. Still, I feel the miraclemaker of Kazan would've saved more. Granted, he isn't that great with the ball at his feet. I'm a pragmatic person when it comes to goalkeepers: saving shots is primary, participation in build-up secondary.
Alisson was fantastic. Son should have scored, but it was a great save. Just a tad better luck, and Korean could have had 3 goals. A little better luck on the defensive side, and it's a much closer game.
I am sick and tired of all these former jocks claiming to be experts appearing on TV. Kim SG is bad. When some shots off the goal are saved they look great but they are not even counted as saves under some match statistics systems. If someone is good enough to be a NT goalie he is likely to make a few good saves in a game. Kim SG needs to be replaced. ESPN which is more generous with shots on goal reports 9 shots on goal probably including the PK. Others have far fewer. Getting scored 4 out of those 9(or 3 out of 8) is at best average performance. And he has been worse in other games.
Pro footballers in their late 30's are definitely more fit than your average joe in their 20's. They need to allow pro athletes to delay military service to 38 or something.
Honestly pretty impressive how well Korea does in sports given the absolutely massive disadvantage that is conscription
This is what I've been saying for ages. Korea is full of idiots who disagree with this b/c they think it is fair only if everyone goes to the army at the same age.
Yes, the military requirement should be abolished for the pro players In addition, the following needs to happen, too: 1. Win more often against the higher-end afc teams, such as Japan and Iran. Japan has improved skill-wise. With Iran, less so but they are good at frustrating the knt for whatever reason. But still, those are no excuses as these are considered world cup minnows. The afc isn't even acknowledged at all in the global stage, so the least you can do is to be #1 often within the afc. 2. Train kids to be more selfish and outspoken. This isn't a footballing skill but an athlete needs to have dominant character and it can indirectly affect how you are viewed by the opposition. This is also a cultural weakness, and so can take multiple generations to adapt. 3. In connection to the above, why do the knt players appear 'weaker' and 'feminine'? Whatever this is, this needs to be fixed pronto. 4. Be more supportive of players trying to get into good European or South American leagues. Erase the red-tape and even provide a little financial incentive. 5. After the above happens and is successful, ban players from playing for the national team if they aren't playing in Europe or SA. 6. This is more experimental but I prefer the knt tries a domestic coach one more time. This time someone who is younger and has played for the national team consistently. Yes, the expertise is lacking but I prefer this profile due to better ability to understand the team's weaknesses. I think Hiddink and Pim Verbeek were the exceptions.
Can't fault Jung Woo-young for the penalty given, he didn't see Richarlison coming from behind when he went to clear the ball inside the box. The penalty shouldn't have been awarded and it was worth reviewing over VAR, but Turpin didn't bat an eye and overruled that decision. Don't want to be making excuses but the officiating in this WC has been terrible even with the technology, I have lost count at the amount of times fouls weren't called upon when they were clearly justified. Anthony Taylor despite having VAR, a headset, and a watch has been a shit stain of a referee especially for the EPL, it's beyond me as to how he's still officiating but the dude is a complete ass.
An idea to improve Korean football: A Korean company signs a sponsorship contract with FC Augsburg, while in return, they go back to what they were: a place where Korean talents grew. Mid-lower table Bundesliga teams are perfect to gain experience in.
Let's be honest, those match stats flatter us because Brazil stopped giving a f*** in the second half
I have never understood why penalties are given when a player comes from behind of a player clearing the ball? How is he supposed to see it? If you going to be cynical you can used that all the time, place yourself behind players, throwing yourself ahead of them. VAR should at least have taken a look.
As I've stated before I have no problems with VAR, the issue is the people behind the technology. There's no point in having a technology aid you when you have a serious case of myopia and a poor judgment at that.
I do agree to a certain extent, but Kim Seung Gyu also made a lot of great saves. Not like Brazil just stopped playing. They had a lot of chances in the 2nd half, too.
In the group stage, Switzerland and Serbia didn't get a single shot on goal for the entire match, but I think Korea got a few shots off even before the Brazilians took their foot off the gas pedal.
They didn't take their foot off the gas in the 2nd half. They just eased it and went from 80mph to 70mph, which is still illegal in most roads.
Croatia can beat Brazil. It is shocking that some people are resigned to the fact the better team won. Brazil are rarely beaten by a better team because there is none. Even when Germany beat them 7-1, the match statistics was slightly in favor of Brazil. If Croats beat Brazil, weeaboos and Korean 토착왜구 here will go crazy saying things like Japan >>>>>>>China > Korea. Japan getting close calls 100 percent of time is sickening. I don't know what holds for WC's future. Japan will win it all in a not too distant future. Currently VAR really fcked up the game. The referee still has all the power. If he senses something he does not like, he can simply forgo VAR. Unlike in some other sports you cannot force a VAR on the referee. The referee can even overturn the VAR decision. VAR helps the game only if the referee is willing. Referees are as corrupt as before. The only thing VAR did in this WC was to give credence to corrupt referees under the façade of technology being used to promote fairness.
