In today's Washington Post one of the articles is titled "Calls for a new path for GOP after loss"
Does the MSM just recycle these articles every 2 years? I've been seeing them at least since 2012. Despite that they have 3 reporters on the byline, I wonder if AI wrote it?

What's truly irritating is they have these when Democrats lose, too. For Democrats, it's always "Move to the center," and for Republicans, it's always "Double down!" The sooner the Republicans join the Know-Nothings in the floating garbage island of history, the better

Trouble is, the Know-Nothings never die. They just become reincarnated, as America Firsters, then as the Silent Majority, then as the Moral Majority, then as today's Republicans. Tomorrow they will still exist, whatever they are called.

They don't have to. As long as they can be shut out of the political process for awhile it is good. With the exception of Chinese, it took almost 70 years from their time to restrict immigration to the US and almost 30 years for anti-Catholicism to be a major Presidential election theme.

Then again, when Democrats win elections the message is about how they need to work with the GOP; when Republicans win, the message is that Democrats need to accept that the GOP is completely in charge now.

A lot of these folks wish it was the 90s and early to mid 00s.

And as mentioned, Perlstein's books taught me that a lot of the pundit folk aren't exactly the brightest.

I want them to die out and fade away like the Federalists, and then for the Democrats to eventually split into two large factions--one center-left, the other center-right--to form an entirely new two-party system based on a shared acceptance of pluralistic democracy, just like the Jeffersonian Republicans split into two new factions to form the Democrats and the Whigs.

The GOP is beyond saving, and I don't even think the remnants of the party could provide a base for a 21st century political party committed to liberal democracy in a large cosmopolitan republic.

Following the 2004 Presidential election, The WSJ Op-Ed section crowed about Bush's "mandate" and how the nation wanted him to enact conservative policies without compromise. Following the '08 election, when Obama won by more than what Bush ever did, the Journal wrote about how Obama shouldn't just ignore the 47% of people that did not vote for him and how he bore responsibility for governing for the entire country.

Yeah sure those guys are right-wing shills, but that attitude also bled somewhat into the less overly political media, as your comment notes.

"Aww hell, Charlie. I don't wanna be like all dem Dummocrats who care about voting rights & actually vote. I'm a gonna stay home and skin some raccoons or sumthin"

CK "No, no, no! Don't skin raccoons on election day, Cletus. Think of voting like taxes. You hate them but you have to pay them, right?"

It's almost like the GOP has decided that winning elections is irrelevant to their goals.

In a way it is because when you win elections you have to govern.

I was thinking more along the lines of "we have better ways of taking power than pesky elections" but your answer works, too.
