And because Cameroon scored against Brazil, the United States finishes the group stage as the only team not to allow a goal from open play, and for the first time in the modern era, nobody wins all three of their group stage games.

2022 WC becomes the worst group-phase performance for CONMEBOL, matching 1994 and 2002: 2 teams in R16.

In both 1994 and 2002 WCs, BRA opened R16 against 23rd FIFA ranked teams (USA, BEL).
In 2022 WC, BRA will open R16 against the 28th FIFA ranked team (KOR).

As some of you may know, Switzerland (and not Mexico) is the true owner of the "curse of the fifth match" (or "maldición del quinto partido"). Concretely, the Swiss has never ever played more than 4 matches, not even in the WC they organized in 1954. Instead, Mexico did get to play a fifth match in 1986.

Could Switzerland break out of its curse?

Speaking of "curses", notice that, since they stopped using the name of Yugoslavia, Serbia (including 'Serbia and Montenegro') has not been able to qualify to the Round of 16.

I just noticed that we can call this the "curse of the fourth championship", as it started hurting to Italy and Germany right after they obtained their fourth championship...

Having said that, it seems that Brazil is immune to it...

I don't know if statistics are kept on stoppage time, but this tournament must have broken the record for most minutes played at a World Cup. Or will, once all the matches are completed.
