Oh boy, this is one of those classic matchups you hope to see in a WC finals...

From the Dutch shocking Argentina in '74, to Argentina's first WC title four years later, to "DENNIS BERGKAMP!" in '98, this has been consistently one of the matchups most likely to deliver entertainment, quality and intrigue in equal measure (we'll just pretend that '06 game never happened ;) ).

You've also forgot that boring WC2014 0x0 semifinal that ARG won on PKs (can't blame you).

But yeah, this is one of the classic matchups the WC is made of. The WC98 quarters was a thriller.

IMO The Netherlands will need more of the ball in the next game. You can't sit back and let Argentina kick the ball around in your defensive half/third--as the U.S. did early in the today's game--as Messi and others, given a little space, can put the ball in the net.

Ehh pressure’s equal on both sides. I don’t think there really is a favorite going in. Maybe Argentina are slight favorites because, well, Messi… but it’s not like we’re talking Argentina vs Honduras, where it would be considered a flop if the opposition won.

Both teams are expected to contest and it won’t be an upset if one or the other wins

Unfortunately, the Dutch no longer play the attractive football they used to. Still, a classic matchup between two of the most overall underperforming countries in World Cup history.

If Argentina is an "underperformer" at the World Cup, what the hell are England and Spain? lmao

Yes. They reverted back to pragmatism. Will ironically that deliver the Netherlands their first World Cup trohphy?

    Only time will tell...

The Netherlands against the USA played completely different football than in the group stage. For that, I really think they can beat Argentina which stay only in Messi and 2 3 other players.

Even though Argentina are favourites, I think this could easily turn into a major upset. Messi has been carrying the team, but that's a problem because it only takes one bad game.

As much as I savour a Brazil vs Argentina semifinal, I think Van Gaal will outcoach Scaloni in this one.

I was kind to Argentina predicting a 2-1 win for the Netherlands.

This has potential to turn into a rout. The Netherlands are just as a team and tactically way superior to this Argentina.

Are you trying to convince yourself? Holland didn't even rout Qatar, the worst team in the competition, much less Argentina.

You're really setting yourself up to have egg all over your face. o_O

This has the potential to be like the 2014 game IMO. It depends on how both teams approach the game.

I don't remember Spain & England coming to the WC with such big teams. The teams Argentina had from 1994-2010 should have delivered more.

Holland was pretty poor against Ecuador & Senegal from what I saw.

It can't be a major upset cause both teams are close. Very hard to beat those tactical European squads. Since 1990 the only big teams that Argentina has beat, excluding PK shootouts, have been Belgium & Switzerland in 2014 and many would say those are not big teams.
I'd say Holland is a favorite.

I personally don't read much into these performances.

We saw an improved Dutch team against the USA in the Round of 16 and I'm convinced there is still more to come from them. The Netherlands will grow into the tournament as it progresses.

Every team and every player shows a range where they have their ups and downs, some coincidental, some due to tactics, and others simply human nature. The following is the low/high (on a 10p scale) in that range for the teams left in the competition, at least from my vantage point:

    1- Brazil: 8.5 low - 9.9 high
    2- France: 8.5 low - 9.8 high
    3- Portugal: 8 low - 9.8 high
    4- England: 8.5 low - 9.5 high
    5- Holland: 8 low - 9 high
    6- Argentina: 7.5 low - 9.5 high
    7- Morocco: 8 low - 8.5 high
    8- Croatia: 7 low - 8.8 high
