this legit is such a wasted opportunity WC to add 5th star.

    feels like everyone is mediocre/

funny I recall everyone was always like 2002 WC is worst WC ever. I think this one has it beat 100%.

That's always true, isn't it? After today's performances I rate the Netherlands way higher. Argentina have to rise their game a lot if they want to stay a chance. LvG's teams are organized, Argentina will not handle them. They were lucky to get out of the group in the first place.

Absolutely. There's no stand out team.

Argentina and Netherlands are there for the taking. I can't see either of them winning the whole thing. They have too many weaknesses. We have a better team than both. It's a shame Flick f*cked it all up with his awful team selection.

Germany had one of the best teams on paper and fvcked up big time. I don't see why the Netherlands can't finally win their maiden World Cup as they are far more cohesive.

I do think Brazil and France are better than the others but they are not without flaws. It is probably fair to say that there is no standout team. This was a great opportunity for us to win our 5th WC.

2002 World Cup at least had a champion with legit world class talent, I mean Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Lucio etc. The current Brazil has an attack of Richarlison, Neymar, Raphinha and Vini Junior, with the fullbacks being Danilo & Alex Sandro. Not bad but hardly the same level.

your right about Brazil but rest of tourney is who everyone always shits on. And that quality was pretty poor at that WC.

2002 WC is one that media to this day still like. Thank God Brazil won otherwise worst ever finalist in 2002 Germany would have won what was an abysmal low quality tourney.

I will never speak ill of the 2002 World Cup because it was the first World Cup I thoroughly followed from start to finish and the one that started my fascination with the German NT.

I have huge nostalgia for 2002 WC too. I loved that team although hated how the matches were super super early in morning like pre 6;00 AM but back then as a kid, they forced me to go sleep early. So you end up waking up perm like 4-5 AM, LOL.So I watched good chunk of that tourney when it was still dark outside.

Some interesting World Cup stats to take note of.

As it stands right now Germany and Brazil are tied for the most goals in World Cup history,
both are sitting on 232 goals.

There's a big drop to 3rd place with Argentina (144 goals) and italy in 4th (128 goals).

Also if Brazil reach the Final they'd tie Germany's record of making it 8 times.

Germany's record of Semi-Final appearances (13) is still safe, Brazil sitting two behind with 11.

Messi is right on Matthaeus's tail,
he has now played 23 world cup games in his career (Matthaeus the record-holder with 25 games).
If Argentina reach the semi's he'll end up breaking it.
even a semifinal loss gets you the 3rd place game which would take him to 26.

Only France and Netherlands seems likeable. Imagine england winning it . Same goes for brazil, spain and Argentina. Sorry but i cannot support that kind of a cheating diving football pushing the referee. Just see what Uruguay did and these countries are similar in that regard. I hope for a European winner except england with theirs is coming home

Can't see England winning it. For them to win it they will have to likely beat Senegal, France, Spain, Brazil/argentina/Holland tov win it

    Senegal round of 16
    Quarters likely France
    Semi likely Spain
    Final likely Brazil/Argentina/ holland

Interesting, that period is quite dark period of German NT with only Ballack, Kahn, Schneider as the established star, and young Metzelder as rising star.

Giroud opens the scoreline against a surprisingly resolute Poland.

Two underrated 'stars' of that era:
    Ramelow and Bode.

Bode has to be a coach's delight. He played every possible position. At EC 96, he played wing back and AM in consecutive games.
