You’re stuck on something that happened months ago and that made no difference to the World Cup whatsoever
Tuchel, clearly. Oh, he'd be absurdly defensive with us and probably half the team would hate him by the end, but he's a really good coach. Christian would quit but he cares too much. Everyone everywhere would hate him by the end. And he might quit early as well. He'd also piss off the fanbase because it'd be clear that while he likes the talent ... Tuchel is not going to be super impressed given who he's managed for years. But the dude is almost certainly going to take a club job. And if he wanted a national team job, why not Germany?
This is kind of getting overshadowed, but the Dutch plan to beat the US was to absorb the pressure and hope to get a successful counterattack. I don't think this has happened before for a US team facing a top team.
He’s a good coach, but a bad fit for the USMNT. Talk about a guy who’d completely destroy the team culture. I’d much rather Berhalter. And I agree he wouldn’t take it.
7 years at Hammarby and Columbus. The Lights don't really count as they were LAFC reserves. They won 6 and lost 23 under Cherundolo.
Just throwing some names out: Herdman, Perez, Marsch, Pochettino, Benitez, Martino, Villas-Boas, Wolff, Curtin, Loew, Christensen.
I think that his tenure has been rocky but successful. He checked all the boxes from qualifying and getting out of the group state. But digging more into the micro level, it just seemed like he coasted as opposed to having a killer instinct. His style of getting ahead and going straight to defensive tactics/strategy wasn't a good thing. He dealt with adversity of coaching during these covid years. He's kinda like the Walt Harris (Pitt football late 90's into about 2004ish). Just good enough to make the team competitive against anyone but lacks something to get to that next level. I wouldn't say today's game was completely on him as the team had a slew of chances early into the game to get a goal or two. But the Dutch just sucked us into the offensive box and counterattacked. I think the biggest fault of he had was not finding room for Gio.
The root of the problem from "months ago" which I am stuck on was also a problem in this World Cup "this month". Poor in-game management, questionable player selection, etc. World Cup qualification wasn't concluded that long either. There were things that Berhalter got right at this World Cup, and there were many things that were clearly inexplicably asinine. And this was hardly a departure from what we've seen "months ago". That being said, the team, in spite of the aforementioned, was still able to get to where it got to yesterday.
I like Herdman, but I doubt we'll get him. And we probably could and should get someone better than him. Marsch is not and probably should not be in the conversation for awhile.
I have been through this with you before. Making claims that four guys who showed they were good enough for the international level in 2018 weren't ready in 2019 is ridiculous, even for you. What we do know is that Zimmerman, Lewis, Mihailovic, Lovitz, and Lima weren't ready in 2019. It is insane that Berhalter thought so many MLS guys were up to the level in 2019. It is insane the outsized roles he continued to give MLS players as recently as yesterday. You are just full of shit on these last two paragraphs. That stuff happens every day on this stupid site.
He might be available if Leeds lose to Man City and Newcastle in their next two matches and the teams behind them win. Premier League owners are notoriously trigger happy. However Leeds will probably be come out of those two games with 4 points and then lose to West Ham and Villa
https://www.foxsports.com/stories/soccer/usmnt-players-support-berhalters-return-as-coach This only quotes a few guys, but relevant if the players generally want him back. Feels like Stewart should have that convo with Pulisic, Adams, McKennie, etc.
That article should be titled "Berhalters guys who have no business being a part of the USMNT going forward support Berhalter". I wonder what Roldan and Long thinks.
Well, Donvan and Lalas both just said they could be ok with Greg staying. I don't necessarily agree with them but can't wait to see how these two are torn apart for having that opinion. And it is noteworthy that 2 guys who, you know, have actually played in the WC could see why Greg would be brought back. I'll take what they say with way more weight than what some anonymous 5-year-olds are saying on a message board. Just about to watch Poland and it should be noted Haji Wright has as many World Cup goals as Lewandowski. Just because many of you want to dismiss that playing in the World Cup is hard doesn't make it so.
Example of job security mentality. They wanna stay at their jobs with the same predictable manager for another cycle.
Well someone like Sean Johnson isn’t going to be around next cycle and doesn’t really have that as a motivation. The players by and large like Berhalter, that’s been pretty obvious. And I think relevant to the decision to bring him back or not.
I’ll never understand your obsession with what happened in 2019 compared to what’s happened in the last year. You continue to obsess about what happened 3 years ago when what matters more is what happened over the last 2 weeks. Nor will I understand your obsession with whether a guy plays in MLS or not. The rest of us just want the best player to play, independent of what league they play in. And the problem yesterday was not the MLS players. It was Adams and Musah who fell asleep on goal 1, Dest on goal 2, and Jedi on goal 3. None of those players play in MLS. Now I ascribe a lot of that to the lack of depth at a lot of those positions and the fact that all those guys had very little gas in the tank. But it’s also the case that a lot of the potential depth we need to look at going forward plays in MLS for the time being. The MLS players who played yesterday were Ferreira, Zimmerman, Yedlin, and Morris. Ferreira did not have a good game, but Zimmerman wasn’t really the problem. Yedlin and Morris were last ditch subs who came in once we were down in the end stages, but neither were the reasons we lost. But sure if you want to blame yesterday’s loss solely on Ferreira, go right ahead.
Why fire him? Sure, his approach was naïve, but it's entertaining and you can see the team plays with a plan. I am not that involved, but it seems he build a team with a plan that wants to fight for each other and he achieved what was in line with the quality of the team and build a positive image abroad. What's so bad about that? Can you not better get the basics right, i.e. a good solid football culture, good youth setup, a positive team, and stability, before trying to do more? The USA is still miles behind the teams that typically are expected to reach the quarter finals. If the players are done with him, different story, but I get the opposite idea. Even if these players are 27, they are still not at the same level as the top teams. I feel the expectations completely have lost touch with reality. That, with the immense pressure in the next 4 years, is a recipe for disaster in 2026.
I don’t think the escalation of an aggressive tone in this post is helpful here. Feels personal, but not in a good way. I’m not a moderator, but GoMichigan is always respectful in his tone.
No player would publicly advocate for Gregg not coming back while Gregg is the current manager. Good grief.
Whatever happened to Tab? he had success with the youth teams. All those guys are now adults and some playing for the MNT. I don't follow every little thing about these coaches, but I thought he had success.
The MLS hate is unhinged and it's an easy way to choose who to ignore. Pretty sure the USSF bosses don't agree with that perspective.
