LOL do you think any of: Acosta, Yedlin, Roldan, Morre, Morris, Zimmerman, Ferreira etc earned themselves moves from this Cup??? I could see ferreira getting bought just because he is young....but otherwise, any objective minded observer could clearly see that the MLS contingent in this USMNT flat out sucked.
Yes the US bench is very shallow in talent. So why was an extremely talented player like Gio on the bench for 80% of this tournament? Joe Scally never played a minute and Shaq Moore got serious time. Not enough Aaronson. I know you must take talented guys out to get them in but you must sub with 5 sub rule otherwise you run out of gas. All three Ned goals were complete open shot gifts from poor marking/ball watching. Symptom of a young, tired team.
You mean like all of them do for their club teams??? 4 games in two weeks is not a lot. Pulisic, McKennie, Dest, Musah....routinely play 3 games a week for their club teams. Who would you take out for Reyna? Weah??? Pulisic??? McKennie??? Would you play him as a False 9, and then there's no one to at least occupy a center back or two??? Real life ain't a video game......simply putting the most talented players on the field isn't going to guarantee results, or get better results. And to say that there isn't a steep drop off in quality after the top 13 players is completely naive and shows a lack of understanding of the game at this level. It's obvious to see. Also, the way the US plays is a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3. It's a dutch system.......Earnie Stewart is the head of US Soccer's Technical side.....It's the same system the Philadelphia Union played when he was the TD for them.
I hope it's some Europa League dude so we can see the meltdowns when he still calls up some MLS players.
Musah is a defensive Midfielder.....Reyna is not playing as an 8. The reason the US midfield has so much success in the group stage is because of Adams and Musah being paired together.
Are you really making the argument that Berhalter missed a significant number of talented American players in Europe in favor of inferior MLS players? Or, do you think that it’s more realistic that this roster is about as good as it gets, because there aren’t any hidden gems that have gone unnoticed. This is it- the American pool of players has been identified. Maybe some better options will rise up before the next WC, but the guys who are on the roster today are the best available US players.
Your bar for Greg must have been pretty low to begin with. With far more talent at his disposal, Greg Berhalter struggled through qualification instead of dominating CONCACAF. Absolutely struggled. He won a gold cup: so what - who was the last US coach that failed to win one. He [barely] won the inaugural Nations League after struggling in the final against Mexican dinosaurs sans a meteorite and being lucky enough to see Pulisic get a soft penalty call. We struggled in the second-half against a third-rate Welsh team and ultimately couldn't beat them. We pretty much bunkered against a lowly Iranian team way out of their league. And being down 2-0 against the Dutch, he throws on Gio Reyna for only the second time in the tournament and expects miracles. No Pefok. No Pepi. Christian Roldan and Aaron Long make the roster over far better options (injuries aside). No creativity whatsoever. These were never my expectations. But hey - I respect yours.
ummmm....yes, yes I am! Did you know: AN AMERICAN PLAYER WON PLAYER OF THE MONTH IN THE NETHERLANDS FIRST DIVSIION THIS MONTH....and had zero chance of being on the team..... there's literally dozens of euro players that could have been on this team that weren't. If there werent any euro options left at home, it would totally different.....and I'd be MUCH more sympatetic to Greggg but we've learned this lesson already with past USMNTs Sheeet we learned it in Couva ...when a brash and arrogant Bruce Arena said ..."we have players in MLs that can get the job done" dirctly before sinking that team like the Titanic!!! this isn't revelatory.... but somehow ...the powers that be do not want to accept FACTS. likely because the money of stakeholders in MLS has enough influence behind the scenes to demand MLS inclusion in the US team, to its detriment. I couldnt disagree with you more that "this is it"....it is 100% not it. When did you start following the team??? yesterday?
Please USSF - just announce that Berhalter wont be back so I can run around my block naked in sheer joy
Reyna should be playing as an 8 in this US setup. He should be our 10 under a competent coach, but in Berhalter's system, he should be our advanced 8. With Adams, we don't need a second defensive midfielder, and I'd disagree that Musah has been employed as one anyway.
MLS players didn't earn likely moves but then again they didn't play much so that's understandable. Except for Zimmerman, who was good mostly and won't get a move because he's already making big money. I'm not sure which Euro-based guys earned moves either though. I don't think anyone is suddenly desperate to sign Sargent or Wright. Adams was probably the most talked about guy but realistically the rest of the season at Leeds will say more about his place on the market than this tournament. CP's failure to take a golden chance reminded me of some issues at Chelsea and why even though he almost certainly has another big move left in him I'm still not sure of him ever living up to expectations of a 70 million fee.
That is quite true and also very very sad. We have zero center backs of any quality and we have zero center forwards of any quality. It takes great coaching to win anything important outside of CONCACAF with the lack of talent we have at both ends of our playing formation and we have Gregg Berhalter. We scored three goals in four matches and every one involved one player that is simply not the right player to carry a team. That is quite horrible and would not have gotten us out of just about any group except the one we were in where two of the five weakest teams in the tournament were playing. Me might not be better with different coaching but I am pretty sure we could not have done worse. We did better than I expected but we also did MUCH worse than would be reasonable to expect.
I'll make that argument. When we were whipping in crosses in the dying minutes of the game, I find it hard to believe that Pefok, a Bundesliga player, would not have been better than Ferreira. Aaron Long was more useful to this roster than Palmer-Brown? And Roldan? We don't have ANYONE in Europe that's ahead of Roldan?
I don't see how in this universe we could have beaten the Dutch. We did as well as we could. Our defense was going to be a problem always, and playing wingbacks as fullbacks was going to cost us eventually.
Weah, Sargent, Robinson, and CCV were not rejected by Berhalter. We know this because all of them made the World Cup roster. They weren’t ready in 2019 and once they were they were given opportunities. It’s insane and illogical to say Berhalter was picking MLS guys just for the sake of picking MLS guys. No coach leaves out his best players on purposes and all the guys mentioned were getting call ups in 2019. Honestly I’ve never met a fan of an MLS team who spends much time worrying about the league relative to others. But you seem to spend a great deal of time obsessing about it. No one cares if a player from Denmark gets a shot over the MLS player. They just want to see the better player getting called up, independent of league.
if van gall was coaching the USMNT and berhalter was coaching the dutch....US wins by the same margin or more
Points per match by American managers in MLS: Marsch - 1.59 Vanney - 1.50 Curtin - 1.49 Berhalter - 1.43 (Only one with 0 club titles as manager) Brothers in executive positions in US Soccer when hired: Gregg Berhalter: 1 Everyone else: 0 Let’s look a little harder for 2026
Additionally, I hate to sound like that dramatic over-irrational fan who's pissed that his/her team just lost, but I think it's worth bringing up the point that the USSF's reputation, with respect to picking decent coaches in the last decade, isn't exactly stellar. And I fear that there is a chance that they may pick someone that hinders the team as opposed to enhancing it. for the past two years, the only team(s) that we have seemed to disorganize with the ball, for the most part, is ourselves. So Berhalter leaving, alone, isn't that much of a welcome relief to me.
