We have a big problem and it’s that our subs are actually ass. It was very apparent in today’s game when we had no one to turn to except Hwang Uijo. I almost gave up hope when he got subbed on. Lee Kangin and Hwang Heechan had huge impacts as a sub but if we start them, we don’t have anyone who can change the game off the bench. This is the team that has scored 4/7 of their last world cup goals in minutes 90+. The players we have at the end of the game is IMO more important than those who start. I kinda feel we are better off using both in the supersub role.. am I crazy?
We are massive underdogs according to sportsbooks. They have us at +1100 for a Korea win. +500 for draw. Brazil is favored at -400. 538 has us at an 18% chance of advancing to QF. They only gave us a 9% chance of reaching RO16. Brazil played their B team against Cameroon and will be fully rested compared to our starters who will only have 2 days of rest. We are the only Asian team to have ever beaten Brazil and we can be the first AFC team to beat Brazil in the World Cup.
Offensively, I think that this team has everything you could realistically ask for in order to pull off an upset against a much better side: - Fast wingers/forwards (SHM, HHC, JWY-inho) - Players with good crossing/set piece taking ability, both left footed and right footed (LKI, SHM, JWY-ão) - A tall center forward with decent aerial ability/workrate/toughness (JGS) - A world class attacking player (SHM) Defensively, this team will concede 3-5 goals against Brazil if they defend like they did against Portugal in the first 60 minutes or so of that game - leaving defenders stranded in 1v1 situations and allowing acres of open space. However our defensive spacing and help defense in that game improved a lot as the game went on as the team seemed to settle in, so I do have a little bit of hope. The most likely outcome is probably a loss by a 2~3 goal margin, but IMO the potential for a shithouse win is there, as long as the team goes in there with a clear and realistic understanding of the win conditions. But whatever happens, I'm going to try to enjoy the game as much as possible. We're playing with house money at this point.
I am aware of the recent win but I'm not convinced that the chronic problems have been solved. These include poor finishing and set pieces, defensive panicking and dangerous fouls, giving up easy goals in succession and working twice as hard to get level, and generally a lack of star players. Hard to recommend playing defensively and counterattacking, as I don't recall when this ever really suited the team. The team is more of an attacking one, but, then again, this doesn't often mean more goals scored and leaves them vulnerable to counterattack. Although how the game should be played is debatable, one can easily close their eyes and blindly expect a loss, and rightfully so. But there are some silver linings here. The opposition is highly fancied but isn't perfect and make errors, too. There is some history of weaker teams losing by a 1 goal margin, or drawing/upsetting them. Also, the right mood can spark jun-shin-ryuk (?) in the players. No other country has or understands this. Play with confidence and with this steroid of determination and urgency and they can score 2+ goals but this can be undone in a matter of minutes if they keep creating defensive mistakes.
What is the option for Kim JS? He is going to get a rough treatment on monday. Hwang got to start also.
Whoever believes this Dutch team is not very good doesn't know the game. They still have a lot of individual quality but more importantly they are a fluid, super-disciplined and tactically-sophisticated team.
Jesus is out. Many other players are out as well. Hopefully Neymar wont be ready. I am very glad we won't have to deal with Jesus. He destroyed us during the friendly. Brazil's performance hasn't been that great. Let's just hope we won't make any mistakes..
BTW, why are we and Brazil playing before Spain/Morocco when they finished their group play a day before us???
Yea I've asked that too. The team ran themselves to the ground vs Portugal. One fewer day of rest to prep for Brazil is certainly not ideal.
Brazil vs Korea friendly from 6 months ago. At the beginning of the clip: "seed 1 and seed 2 from their groups in WC can meet in the round of 16." Yes sir! Wes we will! We didn't have Kim Min Jae then so if he can have a go... along with Lee Kang In + Cho GS, we will certainly field a better team than the one we had 6 months ago. However, Brazil looks like they weren't even playing that hard. They are really really good. BUT, I think it'll be closer Monday than the 5-1 score from before.
Yea we aren't a prolific scoring team but I think we can put up a couple of goals. But our defense is really worrying especially vs a team like Brazil. Definitely can't allow easy goals. We will live with world class bangers scored against us. But we can't allow easy set piece goals or missing a mark on a player on a counter. Could hope for a late 2-2 game or something and pray goal posts and ref and offside AI system are all on our side.
I have a cursed but fun thought experiment for you guys. Would you guys rather have us 1. Beat Brazil and then lose to Japan 2. Lose to Brazil 5-0 and Brazil beats Japan
Or 3. Japan loses to Croatia and we beat Brazil and Croatia. But If I have to choose between 1,2, i will still go with 1. Asia will make history again if we both go to quarter-finals regardless of who wins.
Sandro, telles, danilo out means brazil have alves as the only fullback option. Also Jesus def out, Ney possibly out.
I known it doesnt matter what others think but honestly a win over Brazil would be considered flukey and lets face it, it is flukey....the spread in quality in individual talent is wide Thats just being honest a Win over Japan would not and it's important to me we stay on top so beat Japan at all cost
So is win against Portugal if you consider it that way. Who cares anyway if it is flukey or not. A win is a win, esp in a tournament.
But that's my point. We just can't lose to Japan in the biggest stage of football. I would be distraught and this entire run would leave a bad taste in my mouth despite all we've seen so far. For me personally, I'd rather lose 5-0 to Brazil than beating them and losing to Japan. I'm saying this as someone who is rooting for Japan to beat Croatia and happy that they beat Spain + Germany. If by some miracle we're up against them, all bets are off and like you said, we must win at all cost.
